Posted May 6, 2015 I lost my hype for Oculus a long time ago It took me like 4 days of use to decide to sell mine, not because of the quality of the image but because of how not worth it it was to affix the thing every damn time I want to use it. Untill VR is as easy as putting on some sunglasses (and as comfortable for prolonged use) then it'll never be ready for prime-time.. I'm calling Gimmick, just like 3D I don'T PreSS caPs.. You had a devkit, not a consumer version. First quarter of 2016? That's bs. I'm still not happy about a Facebook vr. I'll probably hold out for the htc one. Hold out? If you read the damn comment you'd see I'm not complaining about anything that's been improved from the devkits, but an actual unchanging part of the thing, which is the hassle of constantly taking it on and off. If you read the damn comment you'd see I'm not complaining about anything that's been improved from the devkits, but an actual unchanging part of the thing, which is the hassle of constantly taking it on and off. You were referring to it not being worth it to strap it to your face. A better VR headset would possibly be more worth it... but if you're off the entire idea of VR headsets then why are you even following this news? I'm especially excited for this, by all accounts the accurate controller tracking of the Vive system really elevates the VR experience above anything a HMD alone can do. Edit: Just noticed this from the official blog post: The Oculus Rift builds on the presence, immersion, and comfort of the Crescent Bay prototype with an improved tracking system that supports both seated and standing experiences, as well as a highly refined industrial design, and updated ergonomics for a more natural fit. Posted May 6, 2015 I lost my hype for Oculus a long time ago It took me like 4 days of use to decide to sell mine, not because of the quality of the image but because of how not worth it it was to affix the thing every damn time I want to use it. This, and it gave me headaches for hours after about 15 minutes worth of solid use. DK1 -> DK2 was solved it for a large majority of people when they started using low-persistence screens, (flash images, instead of leaving them up), but it did still make some people feel off. That said, its going to be hard to completely fix it, even with very high resolutions and refresh rates. If you eyes tell you "i'm moving" but your inner ear doesn't agree, you are still going to be feeling some form of illness. Valve claims to have "fixed" it, but its mainly that they allowed the user to walk around in there demos, which fixed it for that 1 case, but still seated experiences with lots of motion aren't great on any current VR device. Some people build up a tolerance to it, but thats very very far from ideal for a consumer product. Its why Oculus has been saying how great seated experiences in both real life and the game (driving, flying etc) are great, whilst also looking into ways to fix it outside this. John Carmack's recent talk at University Of Texas actually went into a bit about trying to fix this. Posted May 6, 2015 Can't believe Valve/HTC is releasing before them LOL. Should be good competition anyway. Before the facebook takeover Valve was sharing all their R&D with Oculus. Most likely that's no longer the case and they may now see each other as competitors despite the close relationship between Gabe and Carmack.
