Experiences with non-techies

2 minutes ago, Chaos_Sorcerer said:

How do you guys handle it when people claim/think their hardware is good when it's not?

Like...I was talking with a group of people I know when the conversation drifted to computers and gaming. This guy was like, "My computer's really good - it's got a core i7, 8 gigs of RAM, and an Nvidia video card."

And I was like, "Which card do you have?"

"I don't know...I think it's an 820 or a 920?"

:|

Turns out it's a laptop. I'm guessing it's one with a 920m...which is not even near high-end. I didn't want to make him feel bad or anything like that, so I just went along with it, but it just nagged me for the rest of the day. How do you guys handle situations like this?

Honestly...the knowledge of the average consumer is beyond just lacking. It's unbelievable. I mean, in BestBuy's flyer last week, there was an ad saying, "Intense gaming sessions need a Core i7 and 16 gigs of RAM". No sir, that is not the case. And these i7-6500U laptops can barely tag along with desktop i3-6300s. Yeah, 16 gigs of RAM is nice, but not nearly as important as the GPU. And the "high performance" laptops they're selling have GTX 940Ms and dual-core i7s!!! Which makes me wonder: why did Intel even decide to market these CPUs as i7s? I mean...you can get a laptop with a dual-core i7 for $700, while that is what you'd have to pay for just the motherboard, CPU, and RAM on a desktop.

And we still have people buying Macs and consoles and these "high-performance" laptops. And we have people who support Donald Trump.

Honestly I have no idea how to handle the situation since I've never been in one like that. Maybe say something like that GPU isn't THAT great or something so at least you're informing them it isn't great but it sounds like it's still decent so that they don't feel that bad. Idk

My guess is it normally isn't for monitors but rather maybe a server issue or something in which case it could be quite reasonable.

it's reasonable under the circumstances, medical equipment is very expensive and "normal" troubleshooting is understandable, but in this case it was a simple cable that wasn't connected, the end-user (in this case a nurse) should've been able to fix it, it's a simple cable to plug after all, but the end-user was not cooperating at all and when asked to check the VGA cable she became aggressive.

The $500 is NOT to fix the cable, it's a "non-issue" fee the company charge (you should read the whole story). We also have similar fees at my workplace, we're expected to call only if it's a catastrophic failure, if it's the case they will not charge anything. If they have to come and it turns out it's a simple fix, they charge us $120/hour starting when the tech gets the call.

Sorry.  I guess I skimmed it more than I should've.  My mistake...  ?

asus rma took out the gpu.. Hdd died a bit over a year and the motherboard died about 2 years later

ಠ_ಠ

Why would they remove the GPU during an RMA?

What model i7 is that?  I've never heard of an i7 with an x in the model number.

Not sure what the u means either.

Dunno, originally it had a GT 640m or something but then it was bumped to Intel hd graphics and there was a missing chip

i use an x as a placeholder for a number because I don't know what that is. The u stands for ultra low voltage but I say it stands for ultra shit as it can't even beat out an i5 760 in single threaded tasks

iirc i7 3517u

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

138 is a good number.

I feel like you need a hug and someone to buy you a shiny new CPU to make up for all the tech shit you've had to put up with.  ?

And he kept on say that his alienware was good value at $2500 (facepalm #5) and the only other company he though made "gaming" laptops was razer and for that you had to plug in graphics card (nuclear facepalm #3).

No but An R9 M290X  is about as good as an R9 380,

My Grandpa isn't a techie, but for his age he's not terrible with tech. Since he lives in Gig city, he get's 7GB download and 2GB upload. One day he complained that the internet was slow. When I walked into his office he said that the internet on his PC was not working and that he was going to call the fiber optic company and complain. When I looked on the back of his pc I saw the ethernet cable was unplugged I said "Grandpa? Does this pc use a wireless connection?" He said, "No, it uses an internet connection." I held up the blue ethernet cable and asked if he'd unplugged it. He said yes. I plugged it in and he said "Wait! Don't plug that in! The computer says I should use an ethernet cable. That one says EPB Fiber Optics on it!" I explained that it was the company name and that the cable was an ethernet cable. We plugged it in and his Internet was fine.

There was another time when he had just gotten a new phone and he thought the play store was a porn app...

I remember my uncle was complaining about his slow laptop so he handed it to me so I could see whats wrong, I opened the lid and sure enough like 20 hentai adware pop ups showed up and i was like "Hey thats pretty good"

Mildly short story shorter, the disk was more fragmented than the asteroid belt and had the computer equivalent of AIDS.

Your definition of "high-end" may not be what I consider as high-end and vice versa. Taking the cpus from our systems, Core i5 6500 vs Xeon E5 1650 v3. To you, that Core i5 is a awesome CPU, but to me it's okay, not bad. And my CPU, to you can be overkill or a total waste. The thing is, your build is yours and my build is mine. Same as that person with his laptop. Each computer has their place for that specific individual, which is why it's called a PC, "Personal" computer. Now if that laptop meets that person's needs, expectations, and he's very satisfied with his purchase, then it's a good laptop. Just don't not let the small things get to you.

For the laptops at retail stores, it's the same thing. The average consumer isn't looking for ultra high-end, they just want something decent and a discrete gpu is better than a igpu. Also the games they might going to play, probably will not be the games you're going to play (Farmville). They also sell actual gaming laptops, they're just at place at their very own section of the store.

And the mobile Core i7, there are two kinds, dual core and quad cores. The difference between that and the mobile Core i5, is Core i7 has more cache.

You forgot the $1000 worth of install costs. Cant talk about price unless you include the ginormous fee Comcast charges for the right to have the service.

#1 is this CAD or something

#2 Even if it is CAD that's like the launch price of a 970 BUT THE 480s ALREADY OUT.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.
