Experiences with non-techies

So my grandma was having trouble with IE on Windows 8.1, so I go through and change all the shortcuts on the metro interface to chrome to help her out. So the next time I see her she's changed them all back to Internet Explorer. I wanted to cry.

Pentium G3258, R9 280X, Corsair CS600M, Gigabyte GA-H81M-H, 2 Random monitors, a no-name keyboard, a cheap $15 Logitech mouse.

Oh my... Ms. Herring, the most dumb sub in the world. I was in band (and choir is just across from the band room) Some choir kids came in and said the dvd player wasn't working. The band teacher sent me in to fix it. I do not know what was wrong with it, but it was displaying this image in SUPER low quality twice. It was hooked up to a projector. I went in to fix it. I unplugged some cords, plugged it back it. Then she says "YOU BROKE IT!" I was confused, because it was exactly the same as before I re-plugged it in. "I'm going to tell Mrs. Thompson (The choir teacher) that some band kids messed with the dvd player." I got a marker and drew a big smiley face on the white board and walked out.

Just had to explain to my college teacher that just because the work sheets are PDF, that does not mean we couldn't edit them in word.

That isn't really a non-techie thing.

F*cking Control+C and Control+V

My IT teacher is stuck in the past.

He REFUSES to let anyone it ctr+c because it 'immediately terminates all running processes'  This might be applicable in the C and Dos days.  But we are 2015, where you should be teaching Java to students, and where you don't need to dish out $10,000 for a basic Unix system (thanks Linus Torvalds :) ), and where sadly not many computer teachers know what their actually doing in high school.

My teacher isn't teaching us anything.  Except for the fact now some people in my class are too scared to ever push ctr+c.  Ctr+c is so important these days for being efficient, I honestly think he could have potentially ruined some student's early IT careers.  Of course, it wouldn't affect them later on, but at the beginning ctr+c can be a big help especially over time, it can actually save a long time.

Those guys are screwed.

So this happened today... I was in history class and we needed to type an essay, and there were a couple people who didn't have a school-issued Chromebook for some reason or another. Each classroom has a couple laptops for this very reason. The problem was that there were five kids and only 4 PCs. This is where it starts to get funny. There's actually a fifth laptop in the room, but it's sitting in the back of the room on a cart. I asked my teacher why somebody couldn't use it, and he told me it was broken. Hoping to maybe earn some brownie points, I asked him what was wrong with it, to see if I could fix it. You know what he told me? He told me that the charger was missing. This laptop is the exact same model as the other four in the room, so I stood up, grabbed the laptop, and plugged it into one of the other chargers. He was amazed. The funniest part is that this guy has three old ass XP Lenovo ThinkPads that he uses (one that's connected to the smartboard, one on his desk, and another that I'm not exactly sure what he uses it for. Probably porn.)

The other day while in class, a classmate asked me how I knew so much about electronics. I informed him that I had, not too long ago, built my own computer. He responded in disbelief and pointed at my digital watch and said, "Like that one?"

"Not... really."

"So like an iPhone?"

"...you know those little boxes that are on all of the teacher's desks? (the school had recently replaced all teacher computers with small form-factor boxes) I built one of those, but bigger."

He didn't believe that such a thing was possible.

I think this is a challenge....

My friend asked me to help him choosing a new laptop.

I'd been to lots of stores with him, then we ended up in ASUS.

Me: "So, let's check ASUS."

Friend: "Ok.... Please help me...."
Me: "It's alright."

So the the seller said this...

Seller: "Can I help you?"
Friend: "Uh I want to choose a laptop."

Me: "Can I see the list of the laptop you're selling?"

Seller: "Of course!"

Me: "Dude, here in Indonesia they don't sell lots of stuff like in the US so don't expect the best here."

Friend: "Ok.... It's up to you."

Then my friend suddenly said this to the seller.....

"Hey, where can I find MSI store? Maybe I can find a better laptop there."

In damn ASUS store....

His budget wasn't enough for the MSI laptop he was looking for, so this just messed things up.

So, I asked Asrock if the P67 Extreme 4 is compatible with pentium G2030(it's not listed in CPU Support, idk why).

Their reply:

" Dear customer,

Thank you for the query.

Please be noted that the G2030 supports LGA1150 socket.

The P67 Extreme4 supports LGA1155 socket, so G2030 cannot be installed on it.

For more CPU support information, please check the CPU support list as below link:

http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?cat=CPU&Model=P67%20Extreme4

Thank you for your patience.

If any, please feel free to contact us!

Kindest Regards,

ASRock TSD"

LOL, Just LOL.

They told me that it "can be used" but that was after I told them the g2xxx series are lga 1155.

The reason to ask them is because the first gen pentiums are rare here and the i3s are too expensive, but there are many g2030s for ~25€. I actually bought a G860 before I saw that they have replied.

P.S:I can't post a screenshot because my internet is slow (mobile data- 0.XX on both up and down)

Not PC tech-related, but amusing nonetheless.

I had to get a ride from my friends to the movies the other day, and they informed me that they had no AUX cord. I noticed that they did, however, have a tape deck, meaning they could buy a nifty little thing from the store that allows the tape player to act as an AUX connection for a phone. The discussion went a like this:

"Sorry, we don't have an AUX cord to play our own music."
"You've got a tape deck, why not pick up a thing from Wal-Mart that lets you use that as an AUX connection? My dad used one all the time 'til his tape player in his car broke."
"...a what? What's a tape deck?"

"You see that little opening under the radio?"
"[pointing at a cubby underneath the center console] This?"
"No, no- the little rectangle right below the clock. [she points at it] Yeah, that thing."

"Ohhh, I had no idea what that was for. Why did nobody tell us this?"

Our school IT department are retardicus maximus. The teachers don't have rights to put work-related files in subject folders and so, nobody can use the MLE network in order to do work. They also unblocked Google Translate, even though they already know (because someone dobbed me in) so people can go on whatever they want now.

So about a year ago, I was on a school excursion, and as I sat on the school bus I got out my Nexus 7. One of the teachers, sitting across the bus from me (who is the most tech illiterate person I've ever met) looked at my tablet. He smirked and said:

Him: That's not an iPad

Me: Nope

Him: It's a Samsung, isn't it?

Me:... It's an Android tablet

Him: A what?

Me:...... An Android tablet

Him: What's that?

I ignored him for the rest of the trip.

ALSO

This teacher used to have an iPhone 5 in a LifeProof case. But he only had a film screen protector on the phone. One day he dropped it face down on a gravel path, and was really mad at Lifeproof that his precious iPhone's screen was now cracked. He then ranted about sueing Lifeproof. I walked away.
