Apple’s pretty good with long-term device support. My 6S was released on iOS 9 and runs iOS 15. Some of the features are disabled due to older hardware, but it’s still a capable device.

Android, on the other hand…

Good luck getting more than one or two years of updates.

EU had to push laws for samsung to PUSH samsung and other companies for it to be supported 7 years in the future instead of just 2 years..

She currently has an LG phone, its maybe 2 years old. Its a POS. Ive never had an Android device last longer than 2 years. My Apple device feels pretty much as good as it was the day I got it and its 2.5 years old.

Well my Sony Xperia X Compact runs just as good as when I bought it in September 2018 (3+ years ago) and it's a model that came out September 2016. But for this time I have barely updated or installed apps (OS got a small update the month I bought the phone and there hasn't been an update since then), so that helps and it wasn't a cheap model when new. Will keep using it until it dies (hopefully that's far far away in the future, can't afford to buy a new phone now). Just wanted to give an example for an Android phone not becoming unusable after 2 years, I have nothing against iPhones except that they don't have Bulgarian interface. I do have to agree that cheap Android phones quickly become unsuable though, have plenty of experience with that. Honestly now that I looked it up, the iPhone SE2 seems like a phone I'd use - I don't like big screens, 4.7" is good, my current phone's screen is 4.6".

Was gonna say this.. But then again i have a Samsung S21+ and its monstrous.. Might need to downgrade in the future because the size is becoming more annoying now than ever.

Also are you happy with your Xperia?

Havent used those since i lost my Z1 or the Xperia that had those mini keyboards under so you flipped it up to use 🙂

Yes, I'm happy with my Xperia X Compact. Actually all my smatphones have been Sony Xperia - Tipo (June 2013 → June 2015), E3 (June 2015 → September 2017), Z3 Compact (September 2017 → September 2018), X Compact (September 2018 → still using it) and lastly L3 (April 2020 → still using it). The Tipo and E3 were barely usable after 1.5-2 years. The Z3 Compact I bought second hand without waranty, repaired it a few times and then gave up on it and bought the X. Currently I use the X Compact as my main phone and the L3 just sits at home where I use it as an alarm clock also for YouTube and Messenger mostly.

I do have a smartphone that's not a Sony Xperia and it's a Lenovo Motorola E3 I got for free after my dad bought a better phone and I use it as a MP3 player when I go to university (it's basically unusable for anything else, it's very slow).

XZ2 Compact here.  Almost 3 years of owning it.  It's so good I almost consider buying 2 more as spares....because this is the last great smartphone ever made, imho.  5.0" screens have gone the way of the dodo.  And the Snapdragon 845 is chugging along just fine, thank you.

Ive heard Sony makes good phones. The issue is they dont advertise them in North America. And you cant just walk in to a T Mobile store and get one. My mom would be more comfortable being able to go to a store and look at it before she bought.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

You mean, besides the devices being artificially throttled by OS updates in order to simulate "planned obsolescence"?

That was a issue, but it was actually in good faith imo. People complain about phone battery life all the time, espicially on old phones.

For example my grandmother complains about battery life all the time on her iphone6, or did, she somehow punctured the battery and got a new phone. That was befroe the update that throttled old phones. That woulda probably shut her up about it.

pushing people to switch to Apple is like, "Tell me you hate this person, without telling me you hate this person".

And "EWW" on the idea of a google phone.  If planned obsolescence is a thing in smartphones, I'm 100% sure Google does it worse than anyone else.  Not sure Samsung or Apple are much better.  Sony FTMFW.

Pusing people to swithc to a iphone is a great idea for some people. All of my grandparents use iphones because theyre just easier to use, settings are where they seem to be, and usually the os takes care of everything, i dont think theyve opened it in ages.

Iphones are famously long suported, with the iphone 6s getting like 7 or 8 years of software support.

Most android phones get 2 or 3 years max because of qualcom not making cpu drivers for longer than 2years or smthn

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

My mom only gave up her Galaxy S3 because her bank website (not app) would no longer work with any browser she could install on it. She had it until 3 or 4 years ago and had replaced the battery once or twice.

Overheard that.

Whats sad is that its 2021 but printers still suck. I hate the one we have. Bought a wireless one thinking it would be easy. Half the time it didnt want to connect to the network. Ended up having to wire it up.

I've got several Galaxy S9s, and I can confirm that the 845 is still a very decent chip. It's definitely a bit sluggish compared to the 888 in my current S21 Ultra, but they're still good phones.

Pay for many IT jobs is quite high. Also important to note I mean at like a school or something where I'm just dealing with people's laptops they dropped and rudimentary networking, not working for IBM or something

I want to go into IT eventually but printers are making me hesitate

A few years ago my printer decided to take an IP address from another device on my network. Which device did it choose to take the IP address from? My NAS, which had a static IP assigned to it. I got a couple things out of that incident:

1) Printers are still evil.

2) My printer has a rather complicated web UI for some reason (even though it's not detailed in the manual).

3) Printers are still evil.

4) My printer thought it was alright to steal an IP address from another machine.

5) Printers are still fucking evil.

For what it's worth, I have worked in a building where on multiple occasions a user would have issues of various kinds (printer not working, phone not working, can't login, projector not working, etc.), and the issues would resolve themselves when I arrive. No joke. I got some confused looks on those occasions.

Pay for many IT jobs is quite high. Also important to note I mean at like a school or something where I'm just dealing with people's laptops they dropped and rudimentary networking, not working for IBM or something

Yeah, I couldn't be bothered trying to find a job for IT as I've heard from some that it's hard to find one afterwards as companies are looking for outrageous requirements (not my words, but theirs). Or I'm confusing this with CS majors.

I film school assemblies and set up the equipement. The recorder buzzes when plugged in even on an isolated circuit so we use batteries. So I have to change the batteries in 3 mics and a recorder, set up a YouTube stream and a camera in 10 minutes between my class and Assembly. This happened this morning

Many companies require 5-10 yrs of experience and a CS degree.

Yeah, that's pretty nuts trying to find that with new students coming fresh out of college with no job experience. I just heard from colleagues in a couple programming courses I took for engineering.
