I shucked another external USB drive for it's cheap juicy hard drive inside.  I expected a 5900RPM Seagate 8TB Archive drive, inside I found a 7200RPM Seagate 8TB Baracuda Pro. o.O

Jackpot!

How did you get this one?

Amazon.

However upon closer inspection it appears not to be 7200RPM.  As best I can determine it has firmware on it to slow it down to 5425rpm.  This makes sense if it was purposed for an external drive.  I do wonder if OEM 7200RPM firmware could be flashed on but for my server that just serves media a lower RPM is a benefit.  Also with how many minor hardware variations there can be within the same 'model' of HDD, trying to flash on other firmware could be risky.  It'd be interesting to see someone test it but I have no motivation for that.

Nice. How much did you get it for? And what do you consider cheap for an 8tb :P

Would be interesting to see what would flash to it and actually work. 5425 seems like a wierd speed although considering it's meant for portability meaning low power usage and needing lower temps it make sense that they would try to optimise it to get the right balance.

$229 CAD for it.  It's not the cheapest for an 8TB external.  I paid $199 for the last one, which contained an 8TB Archive model, but that was on Boxing Day.  I only buy drives for my server as it runs out of space, it's a lot easier than buying a tonne of drives at once. :)

It amazes me how good that 2004 Transformers game looks on the PS2.

You know, I recently fired up Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando (Insomniac seems to love their innuendos), and it still looks quite good to me, not necessarily on a technical scale, but the art direction. The only real offensive thing as far as visuals go is the godawful aliasing, though sitting back some ways lessens it somewhat. Playing on my 720P 32" tv with the component cables and 480P (Progressive Scan). Might just be my nearly decade old prescription glasses, but I can't tell much difference between having progressive scan enabled or disabled.

Smart. I need to upgrade my drives at some point but mostly right now I need 2.5" drives and those are expensive if I want 10k versions. Will probably go ssd if I find a good price but with the flash shortage it won' tbe for a while. I have lists of stuff that I watch the prices for. Every now and then you find a gem you can't pass up. Just sad I missed a deal last year where Amazon was selling $20 new WD green (6gb/s) 1TB drives... Would have bought so many it wouldn't have mattered they were not that great for anything :P

I didn't mind it, I think it fixed the biggest issues with Windows 8.

I guess I like Windows 10 enough to not want to go back to 8.1 especially since the UI is incredibly similar aside from Windows 10 having a start menu and windows 8.1 having a start screen.

I do like 8.1. I think it’s far more stable, better memory management and less annoying than when Windows 10 was launched in 2015. Windows 8.1 has this great feature of postponing installation of critical updates for 48 hours thus making it less obtrusive unlike Windows 10.

Very true. The other night I noticed that it was using about 540MB of RAM when sitting idle with Task Manager open. 540! That's less than the old Dell Dimension I was given a few years ago. Also, I like the design. I have used Windows Server 2012 R2 so much it just feels right.

For nostalgia, I'm watching an episode of Magic School Bus that focuses on computers. I find it rather amusing that the Internet of Things (albeit, in a wired form) was a concept then too.

You can change your name legally. Sign a few papers, pay some money, and it can be everything you want it to be (within reason)

Well there's very few reasons a mod would probably change it for you. I mean I wished I could get mine changed but I've kinda asked and my reason doesn't really work so...

I think I’ve seen a few people change their names, so as long as your reason is good enough for the mods (it is in my opinion) then I don’t see why not.
