Top DJs spotted using pirated software

It says something about the software industry when it isn’t just penniless students that are pirating music programs, but multi-millionaire DJs as well. Quite a few of them in-fact, as footage from recent interviews with several of them has shown a good number utilising pirated and cracked copies of the world’s most popular mixing software.

The latest one to be caught out is Avicii, who has an estimated net worth of around $60 million (£39 million). In an interview with Future Music Magazine, he was shown to be using a a cracked version of the Lennar Digital Sylneth1 plugin. In the video, highlighted by TorrentFreak, Avicii’s version of the plugin is registered to the cracking group “Team VTX 2011.”

Previously, 19 year old Martin Garrix – who has a net worth of around $16 million – was also found to be using a pirated version of the plugin, cracked by “Team AIR,” and Steve Aoki, worth a purported $45 million, was also caught out doing something similar, though he blamed it on his road crew for not using his previously purchased license.

Then again, it probably shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that those with money pirate software. Stephen Fry previously stated that he had pirated software in the past and that it doesn’t make you a bad person to do so – perhaps highlighted best in Dan Bull’s seminal track, “Bye Bye BPI.”

What this does suggest however is something that’s been painfully obvious with the movie industry for a long time: it’s often easier to pirate than buy content legitimately.

Yeah, some DJ's have been caught using pirated stuff before too.

Not sure who, can't remember anymore..

Like you said, it's just probably easier for them to pirate it rather than pay for it..

Unless for distribution issues, how can it be easier to pirate things than buy if you have the money?

Anyways, I don't really care, was just curious about the above.

It's extremely common among music production companies in Norway to just endlessly refresh trials. One studio I visited had it automated.

This is as much about pricing as it is about accessibility and ease of use.

Even if you were a multi-billionaire, that doesn't make these softwares any less overpriced.

"Hey, buy some muffins, only $1000!" "A thousand bucks?!?! That's insane" "What do you mean, you make $48 billion a day, cheapskate" "Who fucking cares? They're muffins!"

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

Some software is ridiculously expensive.

They can afford it but still...there's better things to do with that money.

Not a big surprise.

i wouldn't be surprised if the pirated version of this software is actually nicer to use then the legit version, so many piece of audio software have so many layers of drm the legit version is more of a pain to use then the pirated one

Old news tbh, it's always been a problem.  In fact, most of the EDM producers who are touring the US getting paid 10 to 15k a show are probably using pirated software to make their music.

Being rich and pirating software for personal use is one thing. Using the software in order to make a substantial profit is another issue. The DJ's mentioned by the OP are multi-millionaires and using this software for their personal gain.

The ironic thing in this case is that Sylenth1 is one of the easiest to use, and well priced. I think it cost me about $200 and it's drm free. Compare that to another synth I have that requires a dedicated usb 'key' and higher cost, something which I could understand pirating for the convenience.

But even then, they cost so little if you're actually earning money with music so it's really pathetic what they've done here, particularly when the software is so easy to buy.
