Care to speculate? I'm thinking our overlords have finally arrived into the Solar system and are setting up camp and deciding on what to do, enslave or exterminate!!

As far as we know, Mars' mantle is dormant, so it's highly unlikely to have come from a volcano. While Mars' sandstorms are huge, they aren't THAT big. Whatever is causing it seems to happening in the upper atmosphere, but everything we know about it (a lot) says that the plumes still wouldn't be possible.

 

I like the theory that it's related to an auroral emission. I don't know how likely it is, but Mars' magnetic field is janky, so I think it should be allowed to do some stupid shit.
