what's the better way of using a kvm?

Buy a kvm and plug the display cables to it and then to the monitor?

 

Or

 

Plug the cables directly to the monitor and manually switch the display input and just a usb switch for the keyboard and mouse?

One is a KVM switch and other is a USB switch.

If you only want to switch USB then use an USB switch and not a full KVM.

I use it the 2nd way, because my dumb ass bought a HDMI KVM and I wanted to keep my DP from my gaming machine to the monitor.

 

So my laptop goes HDMI to the monitor, and the nice thing is that the little nipple on the bottom of the monitor just needs a flick to the left to swap inputs.  So a swipe under the monitor and then hit the KVM button.

 

One day I may even buy a DP KVM.  Who knows 🙂

does it bother you? like how cumbersome is it for the monitor to get black and start again?

No, it would act the exact same if I used the KVM to change the monitor as well.  Literally it's black 1/2 a second using both, I DID have the gaming machine run HDMI to the KVM at start but didn't like not having DP.

 

It's almost no extra work for me to swipe and hit the button.

 

Either way, you're 100% fine.

What monitor do you have. Mine doesn't have swipe to change input.

 

Also, is a UGREEN usb switch good for this? Usb 2 or 3?

Sure, the UGREEN is a good product.  USB 2 or 3 doesn't matter, keyboards and mice don't need advanced USB.

KVM is for when you need to switch between multiple always-on systems.

Monitor switch is for when you need to switch between sometimes-on systems.

 

The different largely comes down what's more annoying, waiting for the OS to recognize the switching or physically doing an action.

 

My suggestion is if you have two computers with their own monitors, you should have separate physical devices (eg keyboard/mouse). If you have only one set (eg two computers but only one screen/mouse/keyboard) and you're not intersted in a hardware solution, use RDP/NDI/VNC and access the second computer headlessly.

Depends on what you want. I got annoyed by changing the input device of my TV that I use as a monitor and ended up getting an USB-C KVM to switch between my desktop and laptop, simple button press to switch my kb+mouse+webcam+display to either device.

well since having buttons on monitors is a crime your sapos to reach around and toggle the stupid joystick... so ya a kvm all the way.
