Yahoo Search gains massive increase in users, and Google gets the hit thanks to Firefox

GoodBytes

Bing is terrible. Yahoo is terrible. Everything is terrible. Google for lyfe. That was the first setting I changed in 34.

EDIT: The only way I will willingly use Bing is if I can turn in my rewards points or whatever for Microsoft money for stuff like the Xbox.

Why is it Google taking the hit? If anything, Bing should have been nonexistent by now.

Yup. Although indirectly Bing gets a boost because Yahoo uses the Bing Engine as it's core.

But I digress. You're 100% correct. The entire reason for Google dropping market to Yahoo is because of Firefox. Don't know why @terrytek brought up Bing.

I just tried the search, with even added Russia as well the second time, I get on both cases: the Honda Civic, under both search results and images results, even multiple pages in.

Microsoft continuously work on Bing, so if it was some day one thing, then yea ok, but now it is not the case. That would be my guess.

Then again, also, Bing search engine is similar to Google, the more people uses it, the more it learns, and gets better.

A few weeks ago I mentioned this on another topic. I tried searching for my schools name and my department and Bing came up with a bunch of porn sites with safe search on mind you. It seems they fixed that now. Pity it still cannot get any matching results for my search.

Edit: And yes turning off the safety filter brings on the porn for the same search.

I actually have a guess as to why it does this and if that's true that'd be so fucking embarrassing that Microsoft should immedietly get the hell out of the search business in shame.

as much as i love firefox, i just could not see myself using Yahoo, simply because Google search results are much better.
for example search for "monitor scaler", google would show much better result than Yahoo.

i also like how google and also DuckDuckGo show up a little information on the most relevent search.
Just like Slick said on the live stream that for searching regular or mainstream stuff Yahoo or Bing would work well, but for something more specific or special little thing Google would work Best.

Considering that googles search results, other than the ads, are generated by what users that made similar/same searches look at and engage with; this could be quite a bit worse in the long run then it currently appears for google search users as time goes on.

Alternatively, google may have just shed themselves of people that can't search worth a fig there by improving the service.

Either way, they just lost more money then I'll ever see, or most businesses for that matter, with this move.

By similar to google you mean getting caught stealing google's results?

The way the search engine works is by having it build links between what user search and results given.

If Microsoft decides to integrate Google results to help it's first results, than so be it. The more user it has better Bing gets, to a point where it won't need Google.

Doesn't seem that large, though.

If anything, it helps Yahoo with it's plans.

Hold on a second though, I think people are thinking OVERALL Google is down 20%.

Google is down 20% on FIREFOX, the web browser that no longer defaults to Google... basically 20% of people don't bother to change the default search engine, which seems low to be honest. A better way to look at it is that 60% of Firefox users instantly switched from the default search engine back to Google.

The Firefox browser is roughly used by 20% of the population, so Google is overall down 20% of 20% which is 4%.

I'm aware that the percentages are number of searches, not number of users, I just worded it like I did to keep it simple.

Recently built a new PC for a family member. Installed Linux Mint 17.1 on it and setup Firefox as the default web browser. I thought it was odd that google was not the default search engine and now I know why. When I tried to change it in the settings, google is not even listed as an option. I left it on yahoo for now as it seemed to work just fine when I tried using it. Also, set the home page to google.ca anyways.

I actually wouldn't mind trying out Yahoo Search in an attempt to help gain some competition.

Google's great and all, but I don't like how they so are close to being a monopoly at this point

Or it's actually not that bad.

I've gotta admit, I went back and did the http://www.bingiton.com/ thing and Bing won 3 of them... when I did it a while back Google won every time no matter how many times I did it. Definitely getting better and I might have to try it out.

Is there a way to have a dead simple bing page like googles? Preferably without having to sign into something, an alternate url or something...? The only thing I can find is to change the image to a still rather than a moving panorama. My biggest gripe with Bing still remains, at work it takes too long to load.

DuckDuckGo master race.

Do anyone know the current status of Yahoo/Bing search results compared to Google?

I tried so hard to like DuckDuckGo, I really did. But the results just weren't as relevant as Google. Lovely idea, still needs polishing to get my full time use.

Might try Yahoo now, considering how much I like their Finance app for Android.
