Yahoo Search gains massive increase in users, and Google gets the hit thanks to Firefox

GoodBytes

Web search giant Google loses a big near 20% of its users in favor of Yahoo search.

This is after Mozilla could not set a renewal deal with Google. It is speculated that this is due to Chrome web browser, where it gain large market share, becoming the second most used web browser, despite privacy concerns, and Google is using it as a way to push other Google services and products to consumers.

Mozilla fall in talks with Yahoo for a deal, and a deal was made.

Firefox default search web browser is now, since version 34 of Firefox, set to Yahoo.

Since this change, Yahoo market share in term of search engine usage has increased by about 20%, and Google lost 20%.

While 20% doesn't look too much, it is quite significant. Google makes money on personal information, and advertisement. If it keeps up, it could be quiet a loss to Google.

This is big and important for Mozilla, as Google used to found ~90% of them. Now it looks like it is Yahoo.

stat.png

As Yahoo uses a modified version of Bing search engine, It is also good news for Bing. The more users Bing has, the better the search engine.

I have been using Yahoo for a while to give it a try, and honestly, my only complaint is that search results don't assume where I live.

I have to specify my country to get the right results. If they implement that, I think it will be pretty darn good. This is something that Google has implemented in the recent years, and has really helped being better. Hopefully Yahoo will follow suit. But beside that, if I don't look for something locally, its actually not bad.

If it means supporting Mozilla, then great!

Google master race, they know everything about me already so I get some accurate results

Why is it Google taking the hit? If anything, Bing should have been nonexistent by now.

DuckDuckGo master race.

Do anyone know the current status of Yahoo/Bing search results compared to Google?

DuckDuckGo FTW!

I have my experiences with these search engines, and it's not really something we can define in therms of accuracy, as it's not the only side of the coin. I'd have to get more technical and specific to name the main differences in the results of the engines, and why they appear to be there, as well as how to use them to get the result you want!

Bing didn't have the market share to lose 20% of the market to Yahoo.

If any it got better!

Remember windows search uses Bing, Windows phone lives from it (and their market improved), as well as Internet Explorer 11 that is a decent browser as of today.

Bing still sucks no matter what. I tried looking up a Honda Civic, and it came up instead with Russian porn. I will never ever use Bing again. So should that other 6 ish percent of users.

Why do you think I've banned Bing from my house? If somebody uses bing in my house, they get banned from the pc for a day.

Bing it's an engine that seems tailored more towards the guys who made it, and you'd have to understand the API to take advantage of the functionality (some of it is pretty good actually).

The thing that is pretty neat about Bing is the image search, that while it doesn't show perfectly and precise the thing you just wrote it does prioritize the most artistic results on many combinations of words, and it's used by many people I know as a quick source of images to do art with and get inspired; as well as many internet hipsters.

But really? Russian porn? It isn't remotely close to Honda Civic, nothing.

holy shit, that is gonna leave a serious mark, almost all of google revenue comes from search, like up to 90% of it, the last time i read about it, losing this much market share is freaking big for them, to the point i wouldn't be surprised if google offered mozilla a new and big contract that would also cover any legal fees against the incoming retaliation by yahoo if they do it

i was to intrigue to not try that, if bing really hitted russian porn with that search term, but it did bring what it was suppose to do, at least for me, and i used bing like 2 times only before

I just tried the search, with even added Russia as well the second time, I get on both cases: the Honda Civic, under both search results and images results, even multiple pages in.

Microsoft continuously work on Bing, so if it was some day one thing, then yea ok, but now it is not the case. That would be my guess.

Then again, also, Bing search engine is similar to Google, the more people uses it, the more it learns, and gets better.

Yeah with image search same with me. No Russian Porn. @terrytek did you try turning up safe search? If it's completely disabled, you'll get porn on pretty much anything.
