SanDisk Announces 4TB SSDs, 8TB & 16TB SSDs to Follow

http://www.tomsitpro.com/articles/sandisk-4-tb-optimus-ssd-lightning,1-1925.html

EDIT:  (See link for charts.)

Excerpt:

SanDisk is unveiling the industry's first 4TB serial attached SCSI solid state drive along with several new 12Gb/s and 6GB/s workload specific SAS SSDs. The Optimus MAX 4TB SAS SSD and Lightning Gen. II SSD product lines, announced today, are updates to SanDisk's SAS product line.

The Lightning and Optimus SAS SSDs each provide solutions to meet specific data center requirements. The Lightning line comes in 12Gb/s and 6Gb/s SAS SSD models that offer a write optimized, read optimized, or a mixed use solution. The Optimus MAX is a large capacity SAS SSD meant to replace legacy SAS hard disk drives in the data center.

The Optimus MAX is optimized for read intensive applications such as video streaming, web servers, and database applications; it has a 90/10 read/write mix. The Optimus MAX SSD uses 19nm eMLC NAND flash technology and includes SanDisk's Guardian Technology Platform; a suite of products designed to improve the life and reliability of flash based SSDs. Mean time between failures is estimated at 2.5 million hours by SanDisk.

Main advantages of new 4TB drives, as outlined by the company, include performance and lower power and footprint requirements, due to the higher density drives that would require fewer racks and power supplies in the data center.

I imagine that this will be extremely expensive, but hopefully this is good news for the near future.  I'm still using a mechanical drive unfortunately.  Perhaps in five or so years this will be available for consumers?

I'm seeing this more as a corporate measure than something we'll be seeing inside many consumer cases.

Pretty neat development though!

i wonder will NANDs ever be cheaper that platters

NANDs require a lot of work to finish while hard drives are really cheap to manufacture

i think eventually it will reach a point where it just cant get cheaper like dram where is just wasn't  profitable anymore for companies

In five years, that may change.

Interim back ups and file management.  Video encoding.  Transferring and storing massive projects (50Gb+).  And whatever madness companies like Facebook use to manage the huge influx of files.

So plenty of uses really.

Gaming and porn, although awesome, are not the sole uses of hardware :)

We're getting there, the storage space is actually like.. changing. Still, that's a lot of freaking storage, it makes sense it's coming to business first.

"640K ought to be enough for anyone"

"DOS addresses only 1 Megabyte of RAM because we cannot imagine any applications needing more"

I can't believe that people are so ignorant that they say stuff like "why would you need X in a computer?"...

It has been proven again and again that you can never have a too good computer. In a few years 4TB might be next to nothing. I mean, I have image files on my computer that are bigger than entire hard drives ~20 years ago.

yes, but how much would you benefit of having all the movies on the SSD? speed wise, sound and so on

yes, it was clear that this would happen at some point, but could you put a 4tb ssd to use right now and say that's worth the 2000$?

Some data centers probably.

Personally I can't wait for this to trickle down into more consumer friendly products.

Edit: I agree that very few if any normal consumers should get this particular drive in the near future. But if we look a few years into the future then I have no problem seeing people getting 4TB SSDs.

There's actually very little benefit to using an SSD as an archive for large files.

Lots of little files and processes are where they excel such as an OS.

Didn't Linus do a FAP video (luls) explaining this already?

Also why question whether a 4TB SSD is worth $2k?  There are tens of thousands of companies and corporations worldwide who will buy this stuff for their server rooms, DCs and high end workstations and clusters.  $2k per drive is not really a lot to these big fish.

It's like when people expect nVidia to tank if they latest gaming card they release isn't up to scratch, completely ignorant of the fact that that $600 card is literally 10% of the cost of the Quaddro card that corporate environments regularly use en masse.
