AMD Radeon RX 7000-series RDNA3 GPUs May Approach 4.0GHz GPU Boost Clocks

Twitter leaker @9550Pro has some new information about AMD's RDNA 3 graphics cards. Apparently, at least one high-end model can reportedly operate at almost 4.0GHz.

My thoughts

This is pretty cool if close to being accurate. As it seems AMD has been able to surpass NVIDIA with GPU clock speed yet again. It was already impressive hearing that Ada was capable of clocking up to 3.0GHz, as Jensen Huang mentioned in the keynote that Ada was capable of 3.0GHz in their labs. There's also a leak that shows the RTX 4090 running at 2850MHz at stock settings. If RDNA3 graphics cards are hitting 3850MHz at stock settings, that's absolutely phenomenal. Even if these close to 4.0GHz results are after overclocked, I would still say that's pretty remarkable.

So not only a good boost but then again another 1GHz on top of that?  4GHz isn't going to be hit soon, not for a few more generations.

I think it's totally possible. The GTX980ti reference speed was 1076Mhz and I was able to overclock one to 1580Mhz on air with BIOS modding. The GTX1080 had a reference boost speed of 1722Mhz and I was able to achieve 2130Mhz on air with BIOS modding. So if you refine the architecture again you could plausibly get a 1Ghz bump

We're definitely reaching the end of gains in silicon; it's kinda sad. 

They are having to just ramp clock speeds on everything now to get decent gains.

I mean, they got another ~1GHz on AM5. I'm not saying it's 100% true, but given that they're probably gonna be the same process I wouldn't be surprised if we saw the cards at 3.3-3.4GHz stock, 3.8GHz when fully overclocked.

980TI speed was only 1076mhz? My EVGA GTX 980 Superclocked does 1366mhz OOTB. (Of course it's not a reference card but still...) To be fair, it's pushing the die to its limits and I can only get 180mhz on top of that stably.

The reference speed was 1000Mhz with boosts to 1076Mhz on reference boards. I had a Zotac Amp Extreme so it was technically a 2.5 slot cooler which helped a lot with OCing on air. Nvidia sorta axed the OCing fun with GPUboost and onboard voltage control that prevents you from going higher

You can't compare clock speed over completely different architectures.

 

The RTX 4090 is Base/Boost 2235MHz/2520MHz and the RTX 4080 16GB is 2205MHz/2505MHz. That means the RTX 4090 only performs 1% better, right? /s

Knowing the clock speed of an upcoming GPU is rather meaningless on its own.

Likely max oc if true, still i have my doubts this time around there have been too many leaks with massively different performance targets. Its a mess.

Could be possible then again just one piece of the puzzle. But hoping for some huge gains especially how sad few years have been price wise for cards. Also it will have DP 2.0 which is great. Also AV1 too.

I'm down for any info on mobile RX 7000 releases.  I'm not at all pleased with the cost of RTX mobile GPU laptops right now.  Even well after release, the 3080s were carrying a $500-1000 premium over a 3070.  Sheer insanity.

Ramping clock speeds is the hard thing to do... It's actually 5nm being so good they can afford to ramp clock speeds. 4090 almost tripled the amount of transistors in the same die area. Silicon is far from dead. 

 

Oh and I forgot the fact that they are finding ways to make sandwiches out of silicon. So going up might be the next step.

Well, not quite. 4080 just has a smaller chip with the same architecture, less CUDA cores. 

 

We can try to compare Navi generations, because if the Stream Processor count is similar between them then higher clocked card should be better.
