Protection money - Norton installs crypto miner in their antivirus

In what may be a bizzare move for many, Norton has now include a Ethereum miner in their antivirus suite, while it's off by default and is designed to mine for the user while taking a share, it does raise some concerns

Norton Crypto does not run full-time in the background. Users can manually switch it on and off. The users are put into a pool with other Norton Crypto users to improve efficiency, and everyone shares the rewards of the mining. It is meant to be a simple and safe way to mine Ethereum. However, according to mAxius and other users, there is no way to fully opt out of the program, and you actually have to dig into NCrypt.exe in your computer’s directory to delete it. Norton Crypto is not compatible with every system, as it has specific hardware requirements to run. Users will need an Nvidia graphics card with at least 6GB of memory and at least Windows 7 and newer. Norton Crypto does not support MacOS or Windows 10 S. Norton also takes a sizable cut of the cryptocurrency once it is mined. The company takes 15% off the top as well as variable transaction fees when you move the crypto to a different wallet. Considering users are already paying to use the service, it seems like a solid takeaway for Norton.

 

My thoughts

As discussed with a lot of past videos and articles on LTT, you might as well stick to using the inbuilt antivirus or get malwarebytes instead.

No. In addition to having a device that meets system requirements, you must also turn on Norton Crypto on your device. If you have turned on Norton Crypto, but you no longer want to use the feature, you can disable it through your Norton Crypto dashboard.

 

Literally a non issue... Also they are not taking a "share". As far as I know all wallets have fees when you start moving these "coins" around from them...

Windows defender is good enough, just use that and have a bunch of backups like system restore or a full backup on an external drive, added benifit is that itll deal with anything that corrupts your data even if its not a virus

Norton is directly contradicting Windows security measures as of recent surrounding crypto mining programs. Also if people don't see any issue than they are entirely accepting of crypto and shouldn't be surprised when every company follows suit.

Just keeping this here as a At this point Norton is not only the clown it's the whole circus.

Seriously installing a Miner on your customers computers is not only skummy but borderline criminal.

I'm so glad I stopped using Norton years ago.  

 

They're going to have to sucker a lot of people into this to make their pool worthwhile, allegedly need a dgu with 6gb vram minimum to boot. 

 

These whole burning of resources for nothing more than a pyramid scheme is ridiculous.  

 

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

To be clear, it looks like Norton is installing the miner as part of the overall package, but it's not MINING unless you opt-in. Or that's what it looks like to me.

I guess the issue is with people hating having a miner installed in their PC to begin with

It might off by default currently.

But who is to say when that policy will change and/or if they will still mine a bit in the background while on idle.

Tens of thousand PC mining even at 1% CPU utilization would still provide good enough result for them and nobody would ever know.

Glad I didn't believe them.

Oh, it's optional for now. But wait till you get a deal of the year. Rather than pay for a Norton subscription, you just have to mine some coin to renew it.

Yeah I mean why would I want my anti-virus to install a mining program even if I don't use it. It would be like my anti-virus installing epic games store as part of the package. If I want a mining program I will install it myself. I don't need my anti-virus to install one without my consent.

I miss the days when a program did one thing and did it well. 

 

You can argue all you want about fees or whatever, but if you ask me, an anti-virus software should just be a program that detects and remove viruses. It doesn't matter if it's the best miner ever created, or had the lowest fees in the industry, it does not belong in an anti-virus software in my opinion.

From things doing one thing only, now that everything is going to be more connected and the same when talking about the "metaverse" and so on.

Always online, browsers being more than just "browsing the web", text applications becoming more than its previous applications of it, cloud everything and more? To always new updates and updating both in games or any software. To new tech around for nearly each year.

I don't want anti virus software installing a mining program on my PC without my permission, I don't care if it doesn't mine unless I opt-in as installing a mining program without any install prompt or notification is a terrible idea.

Lol if you think antivirus companies are in just for antivirus. That hasn't been the case for like 20 years now. Literally ALL of them offer some sort of extra cleanup/tuneup software, VPN's, privacy whatever features and stuff. They all offer extra stuff and they all expanded beyond just antivirus software. It seems your mentality is still stuck somewhere around year 2000...

When i saw this...i thought it was a out of season april days fool joke....
First, i never even saw a prompt for the installation. I've seen a lot of the pop'ups come through Norton but usually close in. 
This is super shady that the software itself was installed. Its also very annoying to get rid of and gets re-installed on every update.

Norton: "Hackers can't mine crypto if we're already mining it."
