So it was said on live stream about snake oil c**p being sold to idiots like i think we should be calling companies out on there c**p and punishing them in some way am not saying its right but review booming them for example ie the below

Alternatively you could just not buy it and move on with your life.

Ye we know not to buy this stuff but kids and mainly parents who are about as advanced as a 8 bit display dont know this stuff is crap

For one they sell snake oil because people buy it. Secondly this doesn't look like a snake oil product as your arm sliding across the mouse pad or corner of a desk would benefit from a smooth tight fitting material

I've seen some streamers wear those kinds of sleeves. Obviously not everyone does and I don't think anyone has any belief that wearing them would improve your kill/death ratio, neither have I seen any companies selling them making claims of such. Like you said it's about more easily sliding arm across the desk but I think it's mostly just a comfort thing and to help reduce rubbing against a desk or desk pad if you're gaming for 8+ hours every day like many pro streamers do.

Most monitors on the market are 8-bit displays. Maybe you're thinking of 8-bit graphics like the NES/Famicom? Maybe you need to get a bit more "advanced."

Saying that something is "snake oil" implies deception. Where is the deception? Is the product not actually a lightly compressive sleeve? Is it not actually being sold by Fnatic? The product is silly, sure, but that doesn't mean it's snake oil.

Whether or not they should be selling the product before the research is completed is a reasonable question. If they wanted to be totally ethical, they would wait until their study completes so that they can make claims backed by some amount of data, but saying that they're selling "snake oil" is a bit disingenuous in my opinion.

You'll also see Olympic athletes participate in cupping and whatever that tape stuff was. Both had no evidence of improved performance and have since been shown to have no effect beyond placebo. I don't think streamers are wearing them for performance either, but it seems to me that is what the marketing here is targeting.

That still does not imply deception. If the seller believes the claim, that's not deceptive.

 

Most products make claims not backed by hard science. This is not new and it is only deceptive if the seller knows for a fact that the claims are false.

 

When Linus says that a product from Ltttstore.com is "stylish" and that it will "refresh your look" is that deceptive? Did they take a census of the human race to determine whether or not a majority of the planet thinks that a particular T-shirt is "stylish?" Did Linus check your wardrobe to make sure that you didn't already wear similar products?

There's a difference between products that are arguably too expensive (which is usually highly subjective) and products that simply don't do what they are advertised for.

 

Regarding those sleeves, I actually don't see any blatantly false claims. They probably do "feel compressive" and "reduce friction". Whether that really "upgrades your performance" is another matter (I don't think so), but it certainly isn't on the same level as the totally BS claims of the products mentioned above. I would regard that stuff as merchandise - it's almost always useless, but fans will buy it anyway.

And to think this is only the stuff you have a enough knowledge of to know it is snake oil (or close enough to snake oil to not warrant your money).   Imagine how much product out there is snake oil but you have no idea because it is in a field you know fuck all about?   Diet and health has more snake oil than audio which has more snake oil than gaming which probably isn't even a blip on consumer spending.

Where is the snake oil? I have bought a sleeve like this before (not this particular one) because the mousepad that i use caused rashes after a while (artisan mid pad).

 

After using one of these i dont get rashes or iritation of the skin. It does exactly what its says it does...
