A monitor for a vaporized market - TCL 4K 240Hz monitor

Considered to be impossible back in 2019, but mentioned by multiple manufacturers earlier this year, 4K monitors are not being demoed, TCL being one of the first to show off their screen at their conference in Shenzhen, along with a bunch of foldable screen and MiniLED designs.

Additionally, there were also reports of an 8k TV with a 265hz rate but I don't have a lot of details about it.

My thoughts

Very nice, for the few people that can actually have the hardware to push this amount of pixels. Also considering that TCL doesn't sell standalone gaming monitors I can only assume that other third parties like AOC and Acer will be selling these models instead.

who exactly is that? Jensen himself sure, who else? there is no hardware on the planet right now that can push 4k 240Hz let alone 8k 265Hz

I mean, my 3080 gets ~500FPS in CS:GO at 4k. It all depends on the game. 

 

Also, as far as I remember, the barrier for 4k 240Hz hasn't been the panels, it's been DP/HDMI. Right now, I'm using one of those 4k 144Hz monitors, and if I drop the resolution down to 1080p, it can be overclocked to 240Hz. The panel itself is capable of those higher refresh rates, it's just that DP can't handle that amount of bandwidth. It's cool if they get it to work, but I won't expect to see it until DP 1.5 or HDMI 2.2 is released

well yes that too, but i'd imagine this kind of monitor would use a jank solution like 4 DP cables for essentially 4 1080p regions.
and obviously you can run a static image at 1M fps but name 5 games people still play you can do that on? cs:go is the easy call out, but it's by far the exception. even other esports title have limits (sometimes intended sometimes not) in the engine that don't let them run that high.

League of Legends, Dota 2, Minecraft, CS:GO, Rocket League, and most older games (sometimes you want to replay Half Life 2 at 4k 240FPS). You can also turn down some eye candy in order to run other games at higher FPS 4k (given you don't have any engine restrictions and you've got enough CPU horsepower).

sure league and dota hit any fps you want but they don't benefit from it the way CS:GO does. because the way you play the screen is basically static.
If you're care about minecraft at 4k you have shadders... and no it doesn't get 200fps.
calling on most older games is arguable because proportionally you can basically say nobody plays them.
and turning down eyecandy when you bought the most expensive shit possible defeats the purpose doesn't it??? at 4k you can turn off all AA because it's useless at that point but why would i want ugly looking shadows in my crispy game?

how desperate of an argument is it to say, yeah you need to buy a 4k 1000Hz TV to play mario world from the SNES on an emulator the way it was really meant to be played?
that's not the usecase. that's the kind of stuff you say when you're grasping at straws.

 

since gains from doubling FPS is smaller every extra step and it takes exponentially more computation to get there with how tight the time to render the frame becomes, the validity of the product even existing is in question. arguing for it has super obvious drawbacks and barely anything you can argue for it. it's just a dick measuring contest from the manufacturer. just to market their engineering capabilities. by the time a display like this is relevant nobody will want to buy a stupid edge lit LCD. it's oled it's micro led it's mini led, which ever... it'll be infinitely better for gamers to have perfect pixel response rather than raw huge FPS or what ever the hype moved over to.

this monitor is presented as a halo even though it cannot be driven at the spec it's marketed at by any system on the market. before the latest HDMI and DP spec 4k monitors where doing the same thing. it went from 4k 30fps to 4k60 with 2 cables to then 4k60 1 cable but with sub sampling to well now we don't need sub sampling finally, oh and we push more fps... we just got passed sub sampling... it took almost a decade... the whole time it was just ridding on hype and the fact you wouldn't be able to tell if they make you sit you far enough you wouldn't notice compromise. now 4k is viable but those ones from 5years ago are terrible you don't want them.

the difference between images staying on screen 8ms or 4ms when there's more delay than that at every step of the process is ridiculously small (i won't use stupid words like your eye can't see more than xx fps, but were getting awfully close for average human).
i'm as much a super human as the next guy and i love playing with the latest shiny all the same but this product isn't meant to ever be sold as it is presented.

Nice. Not sure about that HRR 8K though, but 4K 240Hz is something I'm excited for. I get this is more of a demo unit, but definitely would skip curved panel. I'd expect it to be IPS probably even Mini LED too. Also to properly even drive this DP 2.0 will be needed with new cards. It would even have bandwidth for 1080p 1000Hz now what would be really amazing is to see such monitor with OLED though. That would be so smooth! But yeah in monitor space it seems MicroLED is the one to wait for to be the next gen tech.

Not every game has be mechanically demanding for someone to like it with a high resolution and framerate. I run at 240Hz and I love even just moving the cursor and windows around the desktop. If they want to turn down settings that's their call but no need to gatekeep people who just want it.

To be fair having a 4k 240hz would be nice because then you can run it at up to 240hz depending on the type of game. If it's an esports game then you can easily adjust the settings to get 240 fps but if its a game that you care more about the visuals you can still get that 4k resolution to really make the game come to life.

The game I play the most runs at 2000fps (yes, 0.5ms frametime)

It's great that manufacturers are pushing these panels, I want high resolution for some games and high refresh rate for some, so it's definitely good for me

Would've gotten a G9 if it weren't filled with complaints on the internet

I play Minecraft at 4K and I don't use "shadders", or even any shaders. I like the original aesthetic. Sometimes I throw on Sphax, and that's about it.

Um, i could see these being a target in the esports space depending on the price differenced from a 300hz monitor.

My pc isnt far from running that, i could probably get 1080p 350 in valorant at low settings, thats about 4k 90fps. a gpu not much newer could do it fine (think 2060 or a 2070 should do it)

doubt it, doubt the panel is good enough. it might reach a set marketed "features". If they are at all useable or is at the rated speed they need to be at, with good image quality?

The bloody refresh rate race seems to be one of the most useless things I've seen in a long time. 
Just give me a 4K, IPS, 120hz, 10bit display with HDR10/Dolby Vision - I think that will be the sweet spot for most people who are serious about gaming and having it look good and being responsive...unfortunately, I'm still stuck on 1080p

Still fine with 1080p, and I've changed my monitor this month from a 1080p60hz to a 1080p75hz with freesync.

And that will last another 5 years before I consider changing again

It's not the games, but as you point out the cables / connection standards. Going by the local thread 4k 240 Hz seems just about feasible with DP 2.0, but 8k 265 Hz would still be a big fat no.

Yeah you could try that trick they did with the early demo 4k panels that had two HDMI ports each driving half of the screen and now have two DP ports driving a 4k subsection each.

I might be the minority here, but we have been waiting for 32" 4K VA panels for how long? Yes, IPS has ****AMAZING VIEWING ANGLES!!!!!**** (SARCASM), But until FALD IPS monitors drop in price to realistic levels that normal people can afford (cough..Asus Pro Art...cough), we need VA to fill that need for good contrast and decent black uniformity. I would choose a 4K 144Hz VA gaming monitor any day over an over priced 240Hz monitors with greyish-blacks and backlight bleed, or whatever the next resolution will be that GPUs can never keep up with that keeps the price at obscene levels.
