Dark magic?  Linux.  Specifically Linux Mint 20 (my favourite so far).

 

I've done all sorts of tuning using Windows in the past (which I've reported most of it here in the forums), but interestingly enough, Linux doesn't need most of it.  You just have to make sure Linux is setup correctly.  As for Windows 10, yes, you can do what I did and extract a hell of a lot more out of both the 5950x and 6900xt, and it'll end up coming close to the performance out of Linux.  About 90% or so.

 

I will admit that the 6900xt is "tickled" somewhat to extract some better performance out of it (same as I did in Windows), but the improvements really come down to cooling, cooling, cooling.  I'm "overclocking" my upstairs Covid cave by blowing cool air in from the hallway.   After all, the 1/2 kw heater this system becomes heat soaks the bedroom fairly quickly, and then it becomes a race to the the bottom equilibrium as throttling ensues.

 

There's are posts in this forum thread about my performance voodoo (hand tuning), as well as the other Folding forum thread about which AMD driver to use.  Look them up if you can.  A lot of this hand tuning was done after reading many architecture posts about the 5950x and of course my own performance measurement with the AMD drivers (specifically for folding).

So, I think these two are related. I’m assuming that you are using the Open-source driver, so maybe that made a difference?

Open source driver?  No.

 

In windows, use the 2021.3.1.  In Linux, I believe it's been updated to the AMDGPU drivers, version 21.30 (I started at the 21.10 version), as well as using the most current 5.8 kernel.

 

Correction.  Windows?  It's the version supplied with the 2021.3.1 driver (open source??).   As for Linux.  Yes.  It's the ROCm driver using the "--opencl=rocm" command line option.

Well, I didn't even quite make it a full 24 hours before a hardware failure popped up. Came in from work today to find my main machine off, but it powered right back on. Went checking the system logs and it flipped off again, thermal shutdown event.

Looks like the pump in my EVGA CLC 280 failed. I've gotten nearly five years of life out of it, so I'm not too unhappy, but the timing sure is inconvenient. Guess my main system will be out until I can get out to the stores to find a replacement later this evening.

I was just able to get all my rigs back online and Folding away this afternoon. Will see how it goes and what PPD I can truly achieve over the next month.

Points Validation Complete post incoming when Spec can get is hands free...i will say we have roughly 1/3 of the people that signed up with Goose eggs. and a few are folding for the wrong teams...note only folding for team LTT will count team # 223518

Unraid I hate you... you throw disc errors (????) with no information just telling me to power them down and fix the issue, I restarted and this happens lol... To be fair it needed to be done.

1070 down till morning maybe tomorrow night... Have no idea what caused it, happened when I left for work till I got back.

Note: can't be the power supply (I don't think) it's the same PSU I used with the 1070  and it has only 1 or 2 extra drives in it (6 currently) so no idea what happened.

 

I'm off to a great start, at least the 5700xt hasn't done anything stupid this year  *knocks on wood*

I'm about to pull my hair out lol. even gently bumping my desk (i.e. setting my phone down) has been causing my PC to hard lock. I am going to real quick try swapping the sata cable, but other than that i'm at a loss

I had this issue with one of my systems, It turned out giving the ram slots and fingers a clean fixed it for me

Ditto. I would try blowing out the slots for your GPU and RAM, and giving the edge connectors of the memory/GPU itself a swab with a cotton ball/q-tip with some rubbing alcohol on it. Worked a treat for me when this happened.

I used electrical contact cleaner but I guess blowing is also an option if you don't have ECC

something is back feeding power into your computer is there any thing connected at all when its doing that.
