This is highy disturbing

 

Summary

The US state of California sued Activision Blizzard for a toxic work environment, gender discrimination and sexual harrasment.

Female employees almost universally confirmed that working for Defendants was akin to working in a frat house, which invariably involved male employees drinking and subjecting female employees to sexual harassment with no repercussion. “Cube crawls” in Defendants’ offices were common and male employees proudly came into work hungover. Similarly, male employees would play video games during work, engage in banter about their sexual encounters, talk openly about female bodies, and make numerous jokes about rape.

As a product of this “frat boy” culture, women were subjected to numerous sexual comments and advances, groping and unwanted physical touching, and other forms of harassment. A female employee noted that random male employees would approach her on Defendants’ work site and comment on her breasts. Female employees working for the World of Warcraft team noted that male employees and supervisors would hit on them, make derogatory comments about rape, and otherwise engage in demeaning behavior. This behavior was known to supervisors and indeed encouraged by them, including a male supervisor openly encouraging a male subordinate to “buy” a prostitute to cure his bad mood.

Alex Afrasiabi, the former Senior Creative Director of World of Warcraft at Blizzard Entertainment, was permitted to engage in blatant sexual harassment with little to no repercussions. During a company event (an annual convention called Blizz Con) Afrasiabi would hit on female employees, telling him he wanted to marry them, attempting to kiss them, and putting, his arms around them. This was in plain view of other male employees, including supervisors, who had to intervene and pull him off female employees. Afrasiabi was so known to engage in harassment of females that his suite was nicknamed the “Crosby Suite” after alleged rapist Bill Crosby.

My thoughts

If this is true, then it is is highly disturbing. Even though I interned for activision, it was not in the United states, so I can't say anything about the veracity of these claims.

While I'm not going to doubt alot of that did happen concerning the guys, I can say females can be the same way themselves about flirting and such nonsense and yes, they can be worse than guys  - Far worse in how they talk, behave, dress and all the things guys can do - Including showing up drunk and even drinking on the job.
If one could be a fly on the wall to see what really happened for themselves they woudn't find any Saints on either side of the "Issue" - That I can guarantee.


The way those quotes are worded I just can't take them completely at face value.
I've seen too much of it both ways to know better.

The sexual harassment part is a definite no go but I see no issue in people consuming alcohol or other drugs of their choice if they can maintain everything the company is asking from the employee.

Some of the things written in that article I'm calling bullshit on.

Some of it really does sound like an SJW rant to me but at the same time I'll mkae it clear I'm certain at least some of it IS true.

I do get your point BUT at the same time what was in the article is over the top in several ways, as if the cast of "Animal House" was running the show from their frathouse. I know thats how they described it but I seriously doubt you'd have a few guys doing ALL that in front of the corporate heads themselves and nothing being done about it.
I mean it's possible, but at the same time I seriously doubt it being all true in the context it's being presented within the article.

Those guys would be too smart to let it continue due to the possible liability over it and this lawsuit is proof of that possibility because with this it's reality.

Such accusations themselves don't have to be the truth either, whether in whole or part because if someone is spreading bullshit to get a payday, this is one angle they can legally work to get it. 
When it comes down to it, if you can prove it legally (And we all know how that works), doesn't have to be actually true as long as it pays in this situation.

I've been around such corporate bosses and if they had any business sense at all, this would have been dealt with quickly and quietly if possible to avoid any negative impact to the company's image, not mention just having to pay out.

The corporate image of a company itself can help or hurt you like it's doing here in this very thread, the company being painted by some here as "Sexist Scum", which in turn is making some not want to do business with them.

They don't want the negative publicity or the liability, both of which hurts and they know it. The value of one guy vs what it could cost them would make them act.

However to be fair if it were one of the actual bosses, their worth to the company would be much higher so you do have that factor in play too.

1: Making sure that it's understood, we are certainly not the only place it happens.

 

2: Basic common sense says it's not likely at all and I did elaborate "Why" in my post but at the same time I did say it was possible. If you're running a big corp you already know everyone else has it in for you to get what you have ($$) or as much of it as they can, that includes folks looking for an E-Z payday using the legal system as their weapon of choice to get it.

4: They probrably did try but if someone is determined to set it up they'll do it anyway no matter how the company tries to resolve it.
Sometimes is personal vs the company, sometimes is a single instance/incident being taken advantage of and piling on bullshit to make it a much bigger patty than it was in reality and for some it's just pure greed.
In any instance it still amounts to the same basic thing.

my god you are out of touch. No, victims do not burst with excitement after being victimized because of how much money they think they will get from suing someone, they stay quiet about it because they don't have the courage to stand up for themselves and don't want to make a scene. When I was in high school (~7 years ago), I reported a teacher for making racist and homophobic statements in class and when the teacher got punished for it (a few days of suspension) I had people threaten me so much it go to the point where I had to be escorted around school by teachers over fear someone would attack me. If a manager is saying inappropriate things and you report it, YOU will be the one seen as creating conflict, and likely punished for it with reduced hours, pay, or even fired. This idea that victim of verbal or physical abuse can't face any consequences for reporting abuse and its a benefit to them since, hey, free money from a lawsuit! is absolutely ridiculous and out of touch.

Considering in certain fields we don't talk about, people will show up with stories of sexual assault when it's provable they weren't even there. People lie for advantage at the drop of the hat. That's why I referenced the time frame. Some hashtag movements that invented stories out of whole cloth as power plays happened. Yet, there were actually horrible people around doing horrible things. Most of them still got away. It was trendy to re-contextualize non-events into something sinister. The most classic example is actually fairly old at this point: the Duke Lacrosse story. (That one ended up with the DA losing his license, amazingly enough.)

 

Still, for all of the fantasy stories, there's plenty of horrible things that do happen. But the State of California is always after money and they have an entire cottage industry around shaking down companies in the guise of "regulatory compliance". For all we know, Blizzard could have descended into a hellhole to work out, but it's 2021, no one gets the benefit of the doubt when making accusations. You simply have to wait for the rebuttal and more information to come out.
