Thread for Linus Tech Tips Video Suggestions

CPotter

Hi, I run a company called Lux Machina - we helped invent the technology used on the Mandolorian, where we use Unreal Engine, LED displays, high end computers/servers and tracked cameras to create the illusion of depth. This has been coined In Camera VFX or Virtual Production - I think it woulkd be fascinating to do a piece on how this industry is moving into every day use, for smaller studios, and how everyone can access this tech at home!

On the higher end, we use Threadripper Pro, Dual A6000, sync cards, 100/25Gb Networking, PCIE-4 NVME, video capture cards and PTP for timing!

On the low end, this can be accesible via things as simple as an at home laptop and Vive headsets and tracking!

I can be reached at pgaller@luxmc.com

I don’t know if there has been a video done about this already but my son has become very, um, paranoid about online security. He mentioned changing to Duck Duck Go and Chrome not being very secure, complaining super hard that I don’t have any password on my cell phone.

But I am wondering how much risk we are ACTUALLY in by not having any security on my phone, using Firefox and Google, etc….

The fear used to be of having your modem hacked to get your CC info as you made purchases online, then that wifi or cell signal could be intercepted while making those purchase on your cell phone

I am wonder what is the real state of online security and what are the best, practical steps people can take to maximize their security?

I hope the team looks into it, I think it might be very enlightening to see the state of online security and if the claims from Duck Duck Go are true, how much could you actually glean from an unprotected cell phone, etc….?

Have things that are still getting updates, not sure about what you mean about one being less or more secure than another.

Most things will have some level of encryption. That modems and stuff is up to date, while it can be hard to know what features you need or not and what firewall is a good firewall.

Spoiler

What is bad about phones is the sensitive information stored or sent further, and if you are careless with using unsecure networks on your phone (like a coffee shop or others network that is no encrypted). That if you sent some sensitive information on such a network, it could be seen or copy anything you do on it, if you press in a passsword for instance.

Some have their own work phone or handled by connecting to their server if there is sensitive data involved. personal use, you can use an VPN (not all are that good and is based around trust) to encrypt more what you are doing and can put your location else where if needed (maybe to watch a show from another region of the world). That free VPNs or free APP or other APPs installed might not always be that good or could be something that could be dangerous for your security on the device. like apps that might be fake or contain malicious content. Also that with a lot of phone apps, you don't know fully how much access they have, like can they abuse the mic or camera? just don't install unknown or random apps and be careful with downloading on the internet. 😛

the only thing about duck duck go, is that is more "private" or "anonymous" and doesn't collect the massive amount of data that google or any other services on the net does.

but if one is scared of google or facebook, then one should maybe try another phone than android, maybe apple phones or other phones that has less support and less features.

Could be better to post a own thread for your question and others might give some more information.

I'd love to see a video on the audio delay issues plauging Xbox series x when bitstream is used over HDMI 2.1 and Dolby Atmos for home theater is selected. I'm having to force pcm on my CX which is lame and LG points at Microsoft and Microsoft points at LG. Best part is some are reporting that plugging directly into an HDMI 2.1 recover still presents audio delay issues. You could present it in like a crime drama fashion for the entertainment piece. Or if you can't figure it out as to who is at fault then you can say heck with it and make a cold case file video calling the whole ecosystem out.

Partner with Adafruit Industries (adafruit . com) for a Workshop build. Example of type of project: "We Built Our Own Keyboard with <insert high num here> LEDs!" or something. They sell keyboard parts including cases, switches and keycaps as well as the boards to program them, and the LEDs to light them and they have lots of guides and projects to get folks started. I feel like this might be one of the most accessible (in terms of video viability) projects you could work with Adafruit on, but they sell all kinds of neat stuff, and I would swear Alex has mentioned them before in a video, but I could be wrong.

While i was watching the WAN-show, Microsoft got (deserved) praise about the launch stability of Halo-MP-beta. This made me wonder:

When the launch window drops, How quickly do the servers spike?

It is one thing to look at the server load, but I think (as a person who by profession has to deal with industrial power consumption) it would also be interesting to know how much power such a server is actually using at that point (power efficieny is a thing!).

Could you cooperate with a game developer/server company to see the sudden power intake? It would also make the audience aware that even there is an impact. We (the plebs) just have no idea about this amount.

Elaborate on how the server companies can reduce / are reducing impact on the environment? (heat recovery/local distribution, own energy generation (although this is a cop out and should not be calculated as "energy efficient/green"), ...).

Pondering 2 while writing this:

Gaming consumes energy.

What consumes the most?

Run everything locally? (Big CPU/GPU/...) or run on a small machine and use a service like Geforce Now and stream it.

Server farms are likely to be more energy efficient (or use the residual energy instead of just getting rid of it by heat), but if you add this to the power consumption of the "weaker" PC that just needs to decode a stream, just how much is the difference? (If the energy reused for other actions is substracted from this energy budget, would it even be possible to have a beneficial effect?)

So: Gaming on big rig locally  VS

Gaming on a smaller unit with remote rendering/encoding/streaming over internet/decoding..

My opinions are that you guys are most likely to have the connections to answer these questions and that it would be an interesting discussion.

Comprehensive Backup Tutorial for normal PC users

Everyone talks about it "you should backup your stuff", "RAID is no backup", "you need an offsite backup", "Backup needs to be automatic" etc. but I recently tried to setup a reasonable Backup Plan and it is definately not trivial. Some questions this video should answer:

1. How do i do automatic backup but still be save against Ransomware? An external harddrive/ NAS in the same network probably would probably not be save for such an attack.

2. How much extra storage space should i buy to get a reasonable level of safety?

3. Is there free software that can do better than windows backup?

I think many people don't have automatic backup plans while they should, even if their data is not valuable in a money kind of way, but only pictures etc. that will feel way more valuable after they are lost forever.

Hey there. Linus needs to create an updated video on colling laptops or gaming ones.

Start with this device: found a very interesting goods in Gearbest:Semiconductor Liquid Laptop Cooler Heat Dissipation Cooling Refrigerator Bracket for Mobile Phone iPad Tablet Notebook - Silver https://gearbest.app.link/rlG7DQxNllb

This will make a good video. I have a Nitro5 2021, i7 10750h with 16gb ram and a 3060 95w gpu. No underclocking is possible. Already change thermal paste and padding and still getting throttled. Bought two cooling pads unfortunately doesnt help. Still looking for solutions. Maybe a video on different cooling possibilities. I have a mini cooler at home where i can add ice in and let it blow super cold air under the laptop sl those fans can pull that cold air in but obviously concerned about condensation. So a testing video would be ideal. This will help A LOT of people out there and myself ofcourse. Im sure of it. Ps: im hitting 98 degrees often after all my changes. This needs to be addressed properly in some way as it is affecting many laptops.

I guess someone probably already gave this idea, and it's somewhat similar to some older videos(Mac vs PC) but anyway.

Main theme: Comparing current Operating Systems, from installation until basic tasks.

Get a few people to install the Windows 11, MacOS Monterey, and Fedora/Ubuntu and do some basic tasks in each system, afterwards, get everyone that participated to comment what they thought was annoying, hard to do, easy to do, great features, bad features, things that they would like their main OS had, or things that they think others would benefit from.

I think this would greatly benefit from having one power user and one common user of each OS to get a more complete view of the differences between the different OS for people used to different ones at different levels.

I am a GP looking to setup a dataserver for clinic electronic medical records connecting about 4-6 computers. Many GPs have switched to EMR cloud services for reliability and other benefits which is an okay option. However, document retrieval latency is an issue and server side bandwidth congestion leads to annoying load times affecting clinic efficiency regularly. I want to build an over the top server and small network for my clinic hosting all confidential documents locally with cloud back up. A video spin on this would be tight. I'd pay for the stuff lol.

Guys... please save me!!
I don't pay a subscription to YouTube and I can't stand anymore Woojer Edge ads.

It's so hype that as always (for me) seems too good to be true.

How could a chest-vibrator (and a vest with more vibrators on the back) can make you feel sound that any better if your nervous endings that drive sound signals to be processed in your brain are probably all or pretty almost all in your head?

More "snake-oil" slews out of that ad when Unbox Therapy (0.1/10 honest YouTubers) makes a bid deal on a video (can't call it a review) that that brand edited into the ad.

We need a serious and an impartial reviewer that doesn't Lie and doesn't take any sponsor... Linus!

Please think about it.

There's a product I found on TikTok that claims to "REVOLUTIONIZE TYPING FOREVER!!" and supposedly lets you "type at the speed of thought". I think it would be a funny video idea. It's called the "CharaChorder". I'm very skeptic about it, but it seems interesting.

So I had this thought when you did the 16k Video and I didn't know how to get this to you guys so you can even do it with some better graphics cards.  So here is the Idea.  What is you took the computing power of all those Video cards and used a program like Crunch or Hydra to determine how long it would be to brute force passwords.

When Linus and Luke are attempting daily-driving Linux, one of them should consider daily driving SteamOS.  Or Perhaps have Anthony daily drive it for a month.  Steam is claiming that SteamOS is a full-featured and open Linux.  This will mean that people can choose a commercially supported yet free Linux distro.  Like a RedHat Enterprise but for gaming.  Linux users as well as those considering switching to Linux will want to know if SteamOS is a legitimate choice for daily driving.

I just want to go on record that I first requested this on October 1st (and a few times since), and then I see them on the WAN show this past weekend only just realizing that SteamOS will be a standalone LInux, and saying that they want to do a video on it, and I'm getting zero cred here.  I even bought a SuperChat one week to say this and they didn't get to my SuperChat.  [insert meme of Skywalker whining]

And while we're here ranting, yes, I'm also the guy that they mentioned in a later episode as some anonymous people on twitter, that said that I think I can do most typical tasks faster in the command line than with the GUI.  Still stand by that, and would help make that video.

Found this laptop on Instagram this morning. I used my Google lense this morning. It's made by a company called Expanscape and it's a beast with 7 screens and a touch screen in the wrist rest. It's currently in a prototype phase and isn't available to the average consumer but I figure LMG could get their hands on it to actually take a look at it. I am a cybersecurity specialist with the ILARNG and I would absolutely love something like this for working on networks.

Here's the link: https://expanscape.com/the-aurora-7-prototype/the-story-of-the-aurora-7/

I sent them an email to get a quote on the price for a prototype model but I might also try building something like it myself.

Also apologies to the LMG team that manages the "contact us" area on the website, I sent a message there before I saw the forum here.

A laptop review that doesn't mention gaming, even once. Not one word about gaming. For people purchasing or recommending a laptop to someone with zero interest in gaming (solitaire notwithstanding).

From desktop replacement workstation behemoths for audio, photography or 3D work to lightweight office and school productivity oriented machines. A deeper dive review in which "anything cheap" isn't a good enough recommendation.

But why? Some people do want to game, and if you don't like that, why not just skip that part? You are a bit of an oddity, and video making requires you appeal to the wider audience. Plus games are great benchmarks, they show the 3d rendering capability without LTT having to buy a corporate license for wildly expensive 3d modelling software that they only use for benchmarks. Plus, games can be easily compared while testing multiple features, while most corporate software will only use part of the hardware, or all of one specific component for a short period of time. This isn't realistic in the slightest.

I brought two 11 years old computers from my university. Butchered one in order to upgrade the other. I was thinking that maybe you could use the empty case to build a sick gaming rig inside, since I always enjoy those videos. Of course, I would send it to you.

Can we get a deeper dive into Uninterruptible Power Supplies? For example:

Why can't I plug a UPS into a power strip? Why can't I plug a power strip into a UPS? (At least, why do manufacturers say I shouldn't do this and void the warranty?) Is it true that some manufacturers like APC allow attaching their own branded power strip to their UPS?

How practical is a whole-house UPS? How much do those cost? Is it time to upgrade Linus' house again?

What's the right way to test that a UPS works? I would've guessed that the right way is to unplug it from the wall, to simulate a power outage. But apparently that's dangerous because it removes the path to ground? Should I be attaching the UPS to something else with an on/off switch that preserves the path to ground?

If my device already can run on battery power, is it worth plugging in to a UPS? For example, is it "good enough" that my laptop is plugged in to mains power or some other non-UPS filtered power source, since theoretically the laptop will flip to battery power when necessary? Or is that still risky in some power-drop/restore situations somehow? I was surprised to find my laptop suddenly powered off during a ~1-second power outage.

Suppose I care about the environment, and want to avoid creating e-waste. Are there certain UPSes I should look for? E.g., replaceable battery, maybe li-ion for the longer battery life?

Can we get a tech roundup on Linux compatible tech?

One of the biggest issues Linux has is compatibility since developers don't see enough value in supporting a platform an insignificant fraction of their customers would use. For more mainstream/generic tech support FROM the Linux community is usually fantastic however when it comes to more niche devices or devices that are very proprietary or devices that have special functions that require special software, support is pretty terrible.

It would be really cool to see a video on things people can buy if they are thinking of switching from windows but don't want to deal with any of the compatibility headaches linus had to deal with with say his GoXLR.

Alright so my initial suggestion was going to be basically a parody of taskmaster where in a number of LTT member's basically just do taskmaster the UK tv series in an office building set and the tasks are tech related. I came up with a few tech tasks that would be pretty neat, like "helpdesk" where the contestant must become a computer helpdesk assistant and try to solve the person on the other lines computer issue, the trick being they can't say the following words "computer", "CPU", "GPU", "ram", "memory", "power supply", "motherboard",or "power". Another one I came up with is to fill this computer case with as many items as possible, close it and stand it upright without anything falling out, the trick being they aren't given case screws of any kind, just some misc. items that could be poor substitutes. I had a whole vision for it that I think would be pretty fricking dope, but their are some drawbacks and hitches that anyone would be able to see from a mile away. Even though I maintain it's a million dollar idea it's not feasible.

So I threw that idea into the washing machine on cold than into the dryer, and much like all literally all of my shirts, I down scaled. Same dope concept, new dope methodology. Now instead of it being some grand thing the idea would be to take take and LTT member as randomly as is reasonable for the work environment and shove them into a task on an existing LTT set. In my head I imagine someone just plodding about working on their work like some kind of work person than they receive an email notification which details their current task. They then go to complete that task and the camera zooms out to the contestant and the host (probably Riley or Linus) and they get to watch how they do. The host than determines based on their performance what prize they get among some decent ones and and some silly ones. There are some tweaks that could be made, but this is the basic idea. I think about taskmaster a lot so I have the ability to go psychotically in depth about, why it works, what makes a good task, how I think it could be replicated or improved, yadda yadda yadda, but I don't think that would just make me look psychotic, which would not be very cash money.
