To be fair, door locks still have physical ways to be opened in case something like this happens.

 

Plus, the issue isn't really the IoT 'trend', but rather the companies behind it not thinking about security first, having unsecured APIs like this really shows those companies don't care about security.

 

With everything slowly moving to cloud services, people need to get educated on this, and companies need to start paying attention to the security.

The writer didn't research this too much. Not sure why they say the only way to get out of it is to pay or cut it off lol. You can find articles from October when the flaw was first discovered where they talk about the manufacturer giving a couple of options of unlocking it either with a screwdriver or by calling support.

I dont understand the IoT trend. As soon as you connect a device to the internet, no matter how tight the security, its asking to be compromised and mobilized into a botnet, or held for ransom or whatever. I also dont understand why people think they need a smart refrigerator, or crockpot.... or chasity cage apparently. Imo it actively takes away the product's functionality if i have to bloat down my phone with an app to use it. Id rather just have an old appliance thats been working for 40 years and will probably work for 20 more, than a refrigerator that pings my phone when Im out of eggs (which feels really pointless btw, if I used the last of my eggs I would notice). Its basically opting in to surveillance devices being installed into your home that have forced obsolesce, that you have to pay a monthly fee to use. Makes 0 sense to me.
