Your favourite euphemism for coronavirus?

With how Youtube demonetizes videos that either show the text "coronavirus" or say it out loud, many Youtubers have to have come up with various kinds of euphemisms for it instead, and this made me think: what's everyone's favourite euphemism for it?

 

Personally, Hardware Unboxed's "human malware" is pretty good, but the best I've so far come across is from Brett at UFD Tech: "Voldemort"

There are people who like to scaremonger and sensationalize things in order to make a quick buck, either via blog-posts with ads on them or on Youtube-videos or similar. There are also people who are willing to come up with complete lies, instead of just twisting things, in order to gain even more clicks. It's these kinds of people that the demonetization is really aimed at, though it does also hurt legitimate channels to an extent.

Im...at a loss.  That doesn't even fit the definition of stereotype.  How is this an overgeneralized belief about a particular category of people?  Saying "All Chinese people know Kung Fu" would be a stereotype.

It is, indeed. I don't remember who Steve said came up with it first, but Steve and Tim at Hardware Unboxed decided to adopt it for their use as well because it was quite descriptive without any extra context needed.

It's not about finding a reason to be offended; it's called "not being an asshole to entire cultures."  You can make fun of the virus without invoking stereotypes of the country where it came from.  Be a kind person.

I've yet to see Chinese people offended by these. Just white folks.

 

There are a lot of problems with Trump insisting on the term "Chinese virus," basically always using it with a negative connotation and a blaming demeanor. But I think it's demeaning that you assume Chinese people can't tell when someone is joking when they say "Kung flu" and wouldn't be able to handle that. I'll stop saying it when I say it to a Chinese person and they tell me they're offended, which has yet to happen.

 

If anything, satirical use of these stereotypes can be a beneficial thing, because of the aggressive tone against China coming from the white house. A less serious nickname of the virus would have a much more friendly appeal.

Side note, there are terms other than "racist" that you can use when something is culturally insensitive. The more you use the term "racist" on things that are not actually racist, the more you dilute the term and minimize the perceived severity of actual racism.

 

Someone saying "kung flu" is not nearly as bad as someone saying "we need to keep the slanty eyed Oriental folk out of this country" but if you call them both racist then you make the latter seem not as significant as it really is.

What I love about definitions is - it doesn't matter what I think.

 

Who is being an asshole?  You or the guy calling it Kung-Flu?  What is your definition of asshole?  Fairly loose definition (this made me laugh to myself).  

 

Where is the stereotype, Ill ask again.  There isn't one, as you are using the wrong word.
