Hey, I'm in the market for another PSU.  I'm still using the 650w EVGA GQ I got 5 years ago and it's working fine, but I noticed it was bumped down to tier c (I think all of the GQ's use to be tier B).  Any reason why?  I was thinking of getting another one of those since this one served me well. 🤔

Depends when you last check the list. Was it back when there still was B+ and A- tiers instead of gold and "low priority"?  Because B+ tier became B tier, B tier became C tier and C tier merged with D tier (I've type tier so many times, it stopped registering to me as a real word)

MAIN PC:

CPU: Intel® Core™ i9-9900K Processor  Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro Wifi  CPU Cooler: Scythe Fuma 2  GPU: EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra  RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32GB (4x8GB) 3000Mhz CL15

Case: CoolerMaster TD500 Mesh PSU: Thermaltake GF1 PE 750w Storage: 1TB Western Digital Blue 3D + 1TB Crucial P1 + 1TB ADATA XPG Gammix S11 Pro + 4TB Seagate Barracuda 5400RPM OS: Windows 10 Home

Headphones: Philips SHP9500s   Keyboard: Corsair K70 RGB MK.2 Cherry MX Red  Displays: Gigabyte M27Q (27" 1440p 170hz IPS), Samsung UN32EH4003FXZA (32" 768p 60hz TV)

SECONDARY PC:

CPU: Intel® Core™ i3-9100F Processor  Motherboard: ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming 4-CB  CPU Cooler: Arctic Alpine 12 CO  GPU: EVGA RTX 3060 XC RAM: ADATA XPG 16GB (2x8GB) 2400Mhz CL16

Case: CyberpowerPC Onyxia  PSU: ATNG ATA-B 800w 80 Plus Bronze  Storage: 500GB Samsung 850 EVO + 2TB Seagate FireCuda SSHD 5400RPM    OS: Windows 10 Home

Former parts that I've used: Acer XG270HU, Asus Dual OC 2080, Gigabyte Aorus Master 3080, Gigabyte Gaming OC 3080, EVGA XC3 Ultra 3080, EVGA FTW3 Ultra 3080 Ti

How is Dark power Pro 12? Is it better than Straight Power 11?

That makes sense.  I wasn't sure if there were new discoveries though - I can't remember if there was always a separation between wattages.  I may go with something else either way.

Edit: I went for the Super Flower Leadex III Gold

PSU Tier List 4.0 rev. 14.8

Last Update: 27-07-2021

Legend :
Gray - EoL/obsolete and/or otherwise not recommended for purchase.
Green - small form-factor (gold and blue colors are disregarded due to scarcity of SFX PSUs)
Gold - best units in the tier (includes requirements for blue color in tier A)
Blue - quiet operation under moderate load (see details in the spreadsheet)
Hyphen / Dash - Series / lineups separator
Slash - Models (inside one series) separator
Parenthesis / Round brackets - Model variations (which belong to the same position)
Square brackets - Additional description (wattage range, part of SKU code, label / casing color, release year)
Numbers in red colored square brackets - footnotes, see descritptions at the end of respective tiers
Low priority subtiers - Lack of info (no reviews) or minor issues (see the corresponding tab in the spreadsheet). Not recommended for purchase over any normal priority units.
Multi-rail units - Not necessarily better than single-rail units but provide an extra layer of protection by having 12V OCP set lower than total capacity, which is especially relevant for very high capacity units (=>1kW). Pay attention to rails configuration when using with high power draw components to avoid shutdowns.

See spreadsheet for changelog, methodology, detailed description of colors, review sources, notes on grayed-out units including issues like GPU incompatibility or quality and performance issues, and other additional info.

[1] Units experiencing tripping issues with high transient power draw GPUs like AMD Vega, 6900 XT and nVidia RTX3080 / 3080 Ti / 3090.
[2] Corsair SF units with LOT codes from 194448* through 201148* have potential problems, Corsair conducts a voluntary replacement, source.
[3] Units that don't reach full rated capacity under full rated input voltage range.
[4] Antec EA Pro Gold has versions for Chinese market made by FSP on competely different, worse, group-regulated platform (tier D). Source #1, #2.
[5] Corsair HX1200 and HX1200i units with LOT codes in range between 2030* and 2041* may exhibit motherboard compatibility issues, entitled for advanced RMA, source.
[6] Early EVGA G3 revisions had issues with out-of-spec performance under overload.
[7] Older Seasonic Focus revisions (made before 2018) had transient sensitivity issues. Some new SKUs are not affected because they were released later (Seasonic Focus GM/GX/PX refreshes, Phanteks AMP, NZXT C/E etc.).
[8] Seasonic PRIME based units experience shutdowns with RTX3080/3090 (and possibly RX6900 XT) GPUs, especially ones with unlocked power limit like FE and ASUS Strix. It is recommended, if going with such units, to overprovision wattage, 1kW for RTX3080 and 1.2kW for RTX3090, or power-limit the GPU, or performing a 'dirty' fix of disconnecting a pin of 12V V-sense wire from PSU-side connector of 24-pin motherboard cable (courtesy of Jonny Guru). Units based on post-2018 revisions of Seasonic Focus platform and majority of units by other OEMs are not affected.

[1] MWE V2 units have high ripple issues on very low load also resulting in increased coil whine, fix pending.
[2] High wattage CWT GPX based units have problems with failing burn-in test under sub 90VAC input, treat as 230V only, (Jonny Guru).
[3] Units experiencing tripping issues with high transient power draw GPUs like AMD Vega and high-end nVidia Ampere.

Voltages

  Reveal hidden contents

12V rail

The most important rail in current PSUs, mostly used by the power hungry parts like the GPU and CPU, but also part of the motherboard and part of the molex connector.

5V rail

An important, but much less used rail, mostly used by storage and part of the GPU.

3.3V rail

A rail that gets less and less relevant, it provides power to the RAM (though this can be 12v as well these days), chipset and M.2 drives

Single- and Multirail

  Reveal hidden contents

Single rail

A single rail lets all the current of a voltage, in this case 12v go over a single trace or “rail” (see them as breakers in your house). This has the advantage of turning off less quickly, but does mean it allows full current to go through a single wire or connector, potentially melting or burning it before shutting down

Multi rail

Multi rail these days aren’t physical rails, rather they have multiple points where they measure the current (generally 2-8). it can shut down the psu earlier to protect itself, with a lower chance of burning through connectors and/or cables with a catastrophic failure.

Regulations and Topologies

  Reveal hidden contents

Digital parts

  Reveal hidden contents

Digital Monitoring

Monitors current and reports it to software like NZXT CAM or Corsair iCue, generally using the OCP rail to measure.

Digital Circuit

Analog and digital circuits at the end have one goal: transmit data and process information into other forms(sound, light, etc). Digital circuits function on two fixed signal levels, 1s and 0s(binary). This allows for better control of switching frequencies under different loads and can achieve really high efficiency, but is also much more expensive to implement

Specifications

  Reveal hidden contents

ATX specification

A certification maintained by Intel that sets baselines for PSUs to meet.

c6/c7 crossloads

c6/c7 sleep states or “Haswell ready” connects to a sleep state used on Intel processors of 4th gen or newer. AMD has these sleep states too, but doesn’t specifically name them. most importantly it has to meet a crossload performance and that it has to be keepable to do a zero-load-power, that most group regulated units can’t meet, it’s highly recommended you pick something up for modern systems that meets this.

Ripple

Ripple is mostly the noise in DC not filtered out from the AC current. A high ripple can shorten part’s lifespan. Intel allows up to 120mV, but we prefer to keep it below 50.

Inrush current limiting

An inrush current limiter tries to limit inrush current, the instantaneous current electronic devices draw when turned on. This is normally done with a so called NTC Thermistor.

Looks to be the primary side topology. ACRF vs LLC.

But looking at the spreadsheet, there doesn't seem to be info for the 1300W+ G1+ units yet.

Yes this. Also, there is too little information. If you use it with an ampere GPU, it will make a terrible coil whine.

If the 1300G+ is the same platform as the 2000G+, it seems to be using this platform, which is supposed to be ACRF.(not sure as there is no complete disassembly)

Darn so acrf can lead to coil whine?

ACRF/DF has been known to cause the main transformer to coil whine when faced with terrible transient loads, such as when gaming with an Ampere GPU.

Hmm but not if I used my 6900xt? I might just go with the new rmx 1000 then. All the extra wattage overhead would just make me feel good haha

The RM1000x would be a better device. But there may be better options.

For more help, please create a new thread with a link to the store where you would like to buy a PSU.

You can pick a good 850W model too. Corsair Rm850x,  Seasonic focus gx-850 etc. I see no reason to buy a model that has no reviews out.

the market where i live either has that only PSU for 850W or a seasonic 1000W, even worse, the seasonic is out of stock everywhere

I would make a bold claim and say you're fine with 750W models of Corsair rmx/hx and seasonic fx too. 1000W:s can be nice if you do liquid nitrogen oc for cpu.

There is a review on it actually, looks decent but has some problems with ripple under slight overload so i'd avoid it if there are any alternatives, considering it's still MEIC and it's unknown if it doesn't have some QC problems too, there's too few of them in the wild to paint a full picture.

1 last question, what about the Seasonic Focus Gold GX-850W 80+ gold, i managed to find this one available near me, is this good for a 3080/3700x/32GB ram/2x HDD 1x SSD system?

It is certainly better as long as it's an actual Focus GX, not the older Focus Plus Gold (or just Focus Gold).
