Samsung Anounces even faster hbm2 products now 3.2Gbps

It seems Samsung isn't finished on the hbm 2 improvements, they have now anounced "Flashbolt" with 33% higher bandwidth than the already fast Aquabolt which ran at 2.4Gbps

this brings bandwidth per stack from the standard spec of 256GB/s to 410GB/s, each stack is made of 16Gb dies and 4 hi stacks will make 16GB modules,

this brings the maximum bandwidth of hbm using 4 stacks to 1640GB/s, and maximum capacity at 64GB for 8 hi (and possibly a 12 hi, 96GB)

Opinion: hbm 2 now at 400GB/s per stack is quite close/at where it needs to be for mass adoption on the laptop and mid range desktop markets, it will all depend on price but both the capacity and the speed are more than enough to power good gaming experiences while not needing large a interposer, all its missing from the puzzle is amd's version of EMIB (embeded interposer bridge)

Last time I remember, every AMD GPU with HBM has been underwhelming at best. Any reason for faster memory?.

That's more an issue with Vega and Gaming. In compute, Vega with HBM2 rocks. Gaming really can't use that much bandwidth yet. Even at 4K.

thats because we have only seen hbm used on cards that are outside gcn's efficiency range (in terms of how large the gpu is) so its not in anyway hbm's fault

So how does this affect the pricing of HBM2, hasn't that always been the achilles heel of this type of memory?

we wont know easily, as its not like gddr6 where there is some even if small volume that is sold to the "public" (hardware stores like digikeys), it also launched during the pick of memory price fixing and it was picked up by extremely expensive products, to say hbm has been unlucky is an understatement

That has nothing to do with memory. At higher resolutions though VEGA really starts to kick ass but the architecture is too slow

we are mostly focusing on how much bandwidth it allows, but dam 96GB of vram ? thats more than my first hard drive by like 50%

So does all this mean HBM2 can be manufactured cheaper per gig? I'm not super knowledgeable on memory but I remember HBM's major downside was cost compared to GDDR5/5x/6.

If the Fabs decided to produce more, prices would in theory go down. The FPGA industry has eaten up most of the HBM2 supply. That's part of the reason the prices are still high, as Demand got higher than anticipated, which drove supply-constrained prices up.

Big Navi won't have HBM2, but Vega-Next will likely feature a 4-stack arrangement for 64 Gb. If AMD has the money and finally split their design branches further, we could see the Vega-class replacement with 2 stacks for 32 Gb. It'd be almost as much bandwidth as 4 stack Radeon 7, which is more than enough for what the non-Data Center parts would need.

Most probably not. Not only is it unlikely for amd to rerelease with the only difference being a  leap between memories, but also will the new chip most undoubtedly cost more to produce than the regular hbm2 currently used. 

As more and more manufacturers adopt the hbm standard however, economics of scale will hopefully help reduce the further generations of vega’s cost

Science Department King Radeon the 7th needs no cheaper version. 

 

More seriously, I think they'd have to change the HBM controller and re-spin the dies. AMD is having trouble keeping the channel filled for Data Center parts as it is, especially now that it seems Google, Sony and MS are all buying 7nm Vega parts in bulk.

 

I think what it does allow for is the next GPU generation to have HBM at the higher SKUs and make sense. Consumer/Professional parts with 16 or 32 Gb from two stacks. Nvidia is running 24 Gb at 672 Gb/s. 16/32 Gb at ~820 Gb/s is more than enough even for intense 4K gaming. We'll see if AMD has the money to run out a stripped down Compute design from their Vega replacement, so they can sell a high-end gaming/professional cards without having to waste die space on massive compute capacity.

Why would it cost more, implementation cost is the same if not less. The main difference would be the cost of the faster memory chips and the reduced interposer size and increased yield from less components being mounted to the interposer.

We will probably see the 4-hi 64 Gb MI model by next year, however.
