Ive always hated subscription models on things that aren't services. Cause all it is then is a paywall thats blocking you from using something that is on the physical drive you own. (Imagine your front door locked it's self till you payed up again, despite owning the house it is apart of, and despite the door company not doing anything that makes sure the door still works.)
An OS is not a service its a product. Its a piece of software that is on my SSD that doesn't need microsoft in order to work post purchase.
Support is a service... and updates are a service, but man MS holding security updates essentially for ransom would cause some serious negative PR.

Davinci resolve is on linux. Proton exists. Yeah I'm jumping ship if they do it. But I doubt it

you know it's funny. Linux is more stable, more fully featured, supports more hardware and is completely open. the ONLY thing it does not do is run Windows programs with full compatibility...

Wine also works surprisingly well with the AdobeCC. Mainly Photoshop as Premiere is still meh

Thinking about it, doesn't Windows OS have similar problems to stand alone big name game titles? As developer, you spend a ton of time on development, people buy it for a one time up front cost, and then you have to get creative if you want more income based off that. If MS sells you a new version of Windows every so many years, at least that is an income stream. But that doesn't work if they plan on sticking to 10 forever.

 

In the gaming world what do we have? Expansions, DLC, subscriptions and lootboxes. Could those be translated into Windows income for MS without making the users go and buy Macs?

 

So, one scenario is a relatively low cost or even free base version of Windows. I'm thinking, roughly equivalent to Home level. A completely free version might be ad supported, and a small monthly sub for a no-ads version. This would in effect pay for ongoing development and security updates. If you need features above that, they would be either sub or DLC based. DLC might cover things you enable, but don't really need any more work. Things like what pro offers over home, or ultra-high end hardware support. Further sub based would probably be more service led. Cloud storage, premium apps, kinda like office 365 but I'd hope with more granularity.

If they do this, I expect a lot of people to be jumping ship to Linux. So Microsoft's probably gonna try their best to kill off Linux before they try to pull this kind of shit.

MacOS is pretty much a BSD fork with a lot of work put into the GUI. It's really the engineering polish at the front-facing aspects of the OS that Linux lacks. If it wasn't for a few programs, I'd be full time Linux on all of my systems already.

 

My expectation is MS is going to split things up a little different than everyone is thinking. Some MS365 service will be Windows + Office + Azure. Given they update Office every 3-4 years, if you're a smaller business, roughly ~100USD per year per user would be a good deal. Especially as a "live service" would have less headaches than running network-wide update runs. I think it should be a given that this type of integrated service is coming.

 

What happens on the normal user side is a little more up in the air. If they want to turn Windows into more of a Linux/MacOS model where you just upgrade to new kernels when they're available, i.e. a live-service model, it's really just a question of how stupid Microsoft is. MS can't afford to split their user base again like happened with XP->Vista and 7->8. MS only has a few programs left that are native to Windows before a huge Linux migration could happen for average users, thus we're really trying to guess how stupid MS can get in this situation. 

 

If I was trying to plan out a transition, I'd bring in something like "Feature Licensing". A new Windows Key gives you 5 years of feature updates and 10 years of Security updates. this sets in stone the process of dropping off explicit support after a specific amount of years. That's the foundation upon which you bring out subscription services that include OS Features + Office + Other stuff. If they roll over to Windows 11, give the "free" Upgrades but it's only a 2 year Feature License. 

 

Now, all that said. MS' stance of "well, it's not a keylogger...yet" levels of data collection are obscene. The "free" upgrade to Win10 was a brilliant move, right until the moment we found out how bad the spying was.

Well trust me when I say that the biggest advantage of MacOS are the prebuilt machines that come out with them, it's basically built for them, they are not that different on the core side and would have the same issues,

 

in this case Linux at least runs on almost every hardware where desktop vendors don't even care if it runs or not you could call that a miracle

My inital thoughts, if it is similar to Office 365 and more tailed toward enterprise, that means Home users will probably start to get less focus. It could be good or bad, I'm beginning to use more and more Linux based distor's now, even if I prefer Windows. It's good to get exposure.

The only way I'd buy a Windows subscription is if it costs less to do it that way, than it had traditionally cost to buy a copy of Windows every 10-15 or so years and skip a few versions when eventually upgrading.  For example, going from Windows XP to Windows 10, skipping Vista, 7 and 8 ... let's say I bought XP in 2004 for $89, then bought 10 in 2017 also for $89.  The subscription, to be worth it for me, would have to be no more than $6.84 per year, not per month.  (Per month, that would be about 57¢/month.)

And how is this going to work if you stop paying? You just stop getting updates or you can't use the OS entirely? It's gonna be weird if they go this route with something as significant for functionality as OS. Office is just an addon, if you stop paying, you can't use it. Makes sense. But losing ability to use computer if you stop paying is going to be weird.

I don't think so. I think linux will be too "high maintenance" for them. Plus linux is a hell of a lot easier to deal with if you can use the console well, and I'd say that 95% of windows users do NOT know bash. 

 

I think it'll just be like it was for windows 8, with companies offering free downgrades to windows 7.

Come on all this complaining, is people really buying windows? I fell this is a paralell reality in that no one wants to say the thruth. 

People either get a cracked version or buy some cheap ebay license. And MS knows this very well and doesn't care because its worked for them, increases user base and makes windows the relevant OS.

No, you're right, this story is more related to enterprise users and at this stage, Windows is king and for the foreseeable future it will remain that way. For the home users, I think more will learn Linux. These negative report about the October updates etc. have inspired me to learn Ubuntu/Lubuntu.

I'm not sure if companies would offer down-grades though, not now. Windows 10 has been out for a while now and most if not everyone who uses it is pretty comfortable with it now. Who knows.

I think many would stay with Windows that Microsoft doesn't want to support. Maybe i'm cheap but no way am I paying for Windows if it would move to the same $99 per year model Office 365 Home has.

It would push me to Linux, and maybe keep Windows around just for games that Linux wouldn't have support for.

I think it'll just be like it was for windows 8, with companies offering free downgrades to windows 7. 

For what like 90% of people do in Windows, most would be just fine with Linux for things like browsing in Chrome/Firefox, or using a spreadsheet or word app.
