Futuremark will release a Real Time Raytracing benchmark on January 8th 2019

Master Disaster

Called Port Royal it will be added to 3D Mark Advanced & Professional in January and will be the third (I think) publicly available application that can use Nvidas shiny new RTX technology.

Quote

Late last month UL Benchmarks announced its latest addition to its signature 3DMark benchmark suite, Port Royal. This extension to the suite would test and offer comparisons of real-time ray tracing performance for any graphics card that supports Microsoft DirectX Raytracing. Over the weekend further information regarding the Port Royal's availability, pricing, and a full benchmark run demo video have been released.

Quote

Above you can see the video embedded. The video shows a shiny spacecraft dock inside a shiny space station which looks like it is populated by cyber-zombies. Then a person emerges from the space ship and opens a port which releases lots of brown fluid. UL Benchmarks states that "as well as benchmarking performance, 3DMark Port Royal provides a realistic and practical example of what to expect from ray tracing in upcoming games." In particular, the ray tracing you see in this demo is used to enhance reflections, shadows, and other effects that are difficult to achieve with traditional rendering techniques. The benchmark runs at 2560 × 1440 resolution.

Users who buy 3D Mark after it launches will get it included, it will be $2.99 for existing advanced owners and professional owners get it for free.

Quote

As mentioned in the headline, the 3DMark Port Royal DXR benchmark will become generally available on 8th January 2019. From that date, if you buy the 3DMark Advanced Edition (USD $29.99) you will find that Port Royal will be included. If you already own 3DMark you will have the option to upgrade for USD$2.99. Subscribers to the 3DMark Professional Edition (USD $1495pa) will of course also get access to the DXR benchmark from 8th Jan.

https://hexus.net/tech/news/graphics/125195-3dmark-port-royal-dxr-benchmark-docks-8th-january/

So 3 months after release all we have is 2 benchmarks and 1 game that can use it. Those are worse numbers than DX12.

Main Rig:-

i wonder how the non RTX cards are going to perform here, that might be really interesting tbh

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

It seems you missed something:

From what others have said, Microsoft do not include a software rendered in DXR for end users, only developers.

I don't see this comparable with DX12, as this is a double whammy of significantly different new features and requiring hardware to use it on.

Isn't this old news? Was announced a few months ago as an untitled project, and the name and release date was announced back in November...

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/3dmark-ray-tracing-benchmark-january-2019,38173.html

But if I google it I see quite a few news outlets republishing the same article again in the last 2-3 days... Not sure why the news outlets are picking it up again and rehashing it?

Edit: I see, previous articles mentioned "January 2019" for the release date, but the new articles in the last few days have a set date of 8th of January 2019, so the news articles are rehashing it just because they have the final date now.

3DMark ray tracing benchmark (working title)
Later this year, we will release a new 3DMark benchmark test that combines real-time ray tracing with existing techniques to enhance reflections and other effects. The benchmark will run on any system that supports the DirectX Ray Tracing API.

The new benchmark is being developed with input from our Benchmark Development Program partners including AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, and other leading technology companies. We are working especially closely with Microsoft to create a first-class implementation of the DirectX Ray Tracing API.

We expect to release this new test in Q4, 2018.

I think they shoehorned Ray Tracing elements in to the TimeSpy benchmark, or at least that's what they were going to do a few months ago before they announced the Port Royal test. Not sure if they ended up adding Ray Tracing to TimeSpy or if they ditched that plan to make a dedicated raytracing test with this Port Royal.
I can't think of any other Ray Tracing benchmarks?

Yeah, just noticed that. The older articles said "January 2019" release date, but now it's been finalised so it's going through the news cycle again. Nvidia marketing 101.

So, a benchmark of the only solution in existence. What's the point of it again? A self wank job? That's like benchmarking the only car in existence and declaring it "the fastest" by that benchmark. Unless this is the only thing that could convince anyone into buying a RT capable card, so you can run... a benchmark. Yay.

We have three ranges of cars, each with different configuration options. If FutureMark did a good job, it will be a tool for the future too, when more options are available. As for its current (or near future) use, it could still be used to look at differences between different configurations of cards e.g. if manufacturer A is different from B. What if you overclock one part or another? How does the rest of the system affect performance?

The Final Fantasy benchmark has been updated to support DLSS (the other new thing RTX cards bring), but at this stage I don't believe it supports Ray Tracing in either the game or the benchmark.

Final Fantasy XV’s Updated Benchmark Demonstrates DLSS

Square Enix has updated their Final Fantasy XV: Windows Edition benchmark with Deep Learning Super Sampling, enabling GeForce RTX users to test the benefits of DLSS in Square’s massive action-RPG. And to personally experience its faster framerates:

Quote

Features

Native 4K and HDR10 support.

Support for 4K (3840 x 2160px) and HDR display allows you to experience even more atmospheric high-quality graphics.

  • * An OS with the Windows 10 Creators Update or later and a compatible monitor are required to use HDR display.

NVIDIA GameWorks™

This application allows you to check your PC's compatibility with the latest graphical effects provided by NVIDIA.

  • * An NVIDIA graphics card is required to run NVIDIA® Ansel™.

NVIDIA DLSS

This application allows you to check your PC's compatibility with the latest graphical effects provided by NVIDIA.

  • * NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070, 2080 or 2080 Ti is required to run NVIDIA® DLSS.
  • * NVIDIA® Ansel is disabled when NVIDIA® DLSS is enabled.
  • * In order to enable NVIDIA® DLSS you need to set display resolution to 4K.

Interesting, so there's only 2 applications that support ray tracing then.

Well, like other Ray Tracing games, Port Royal is not released yet... So technically only 1 at the moment :P

Wasn't the Shadow of The Tomb Raider also going to get Ray Tracing? It was one of the games other than Battlefield V they were promoting that would feature ray tracing when the cards were released. Haven't heard much about that since the RTX cards were launched...

i bet people at tom raider, said no way we are going to support that disaster, so now nvidia gave the rtx owners a benchmark instead.

Now i see the value in raytracing ?
