Sorta funny as SSDs are becoming dirt cheap. You can get double the capacity for the same price as just a few months ago

One thing i didnt think about in relation to the performance is the reliability of raid rebuilds. 5 is already not recommend due tocthet higher chance of failure during such a large rebuild these days, 6 may not cut it we're going to need to see more implementations of tripple parity or better like zfs has for drives like this unless their sequential speeds are insane.

That said, for home use 2 or 3 of these mirrored would be amazing data density still. If one drive were enough for me and all i had to worry about was extra copies, hot and cold, id be so happy

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Yeah true but still with cheaper SSDs that are slower I would much rather have an SSD the same speed as an HDD. HDDs have too much to fail. Moving parts never last

Ive always said hdds are completely dead to me once SSDs are about twice the price, meaning one ssd is the same price as a pair of hdds. I feel i can get away with off site and cold store with ssds, not hdds, though when hdds begin to fail im able to recover most if not all the data a lot of the time

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Not sure why Seagate is making a 100+TB HDD when they already have the 60TB SSD. Believe this was mentioned a couple weeks back. Or am I mistaken and the 100TB drive will be SSD as well? I'm sure the difference in cost may make the 100TB HDD the better option for some people but I'm not exactly sure to who when you're dealing with that kind of data.

The ssds costs just go up as they sre cramming more chips in and not charging less per gb. This would be less than 1000$ for sure i would think

One thing about SSD vs HDD failures is that HDDs are more likely to give an indication of their impending failure.

At the price point I suppose I could see those HDDs being worthwhile to a few people. Thankfully I'm not dealing with nearly that much data where I work at!

half of the problem is their idea of optimization is to leave out compression nearly entirely for the cpu usage savings I assume. Since most people are ok with installs on console now, and requiring a download is standard, there's no real size limitation.

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I think it goes without saying, this will be enterprise gear. With cloud storage home storage needs are likely to drop, us gamers being one of very few exceptions. The intended customers for such a drive are going to be Google, Amazon, Netflix, possibly Linus, etc... not individuals with epic porn collections.

While 99% of consumers won't even need anything more than 1tb, this will still be great for them since this will most likely mean cheaper cloud storage. You'll be able to back up all your data even cheaper soon.

the problem with the SSD´s is you always either need more chips for more memory or the chips you use store more bits in each cell so you decrease the live span significantly.

this has been the huge advantage of HDD´s int he past decades, they simply added more memory to the already existing form factor with improvements to the technology.

 

that is the whole reason why HDD´s keep getting bigger while the price/TB keeps going down.

 

the HDD vs SSD discussion is another thing where people only seem to see black and white and forget there is a space in between, we will for sure see bigger and bigger HDD´s which will then be paired with flash memory like its already done with StoreMI or Optane.

Really great as far as HDD capacity. For sure I'm more interested in SSDs primarily ans they're getting cheaper too. But such massive capacity sure will come in handy. Just games being 100GB+ today, imagine 1TB game!

Why are you assuming that there won't be any technological improvements to SSD-tech? Take a look at e.g. planar NAND vs. 3D NAND -- a pretty significant improvement.

yes it is an improvement of fitting more memory into the same form factor but it doesnt change what i said, all 3d nand does is stack multiple chip on another to save space.

 

you still use double the nand chips if you double the capacity and the whole concept of this memory doesnt allow for anything else unless you store more bits per cell which in turn reduces the lifespan .

 

sure there will be improvements but just as Linus said in his last video on this topic, the current market moves from fast reliable nand too cheaper and less reliable nand to bring the prices down.

It would not take months to rewrite 100TB of data to a single HDD. Days, maybe even weeks, but certainly not months. It would be even faster if SSDs were involved. And there are ways to reduce that problem, such as multiple backups that allow one to swap in one backup drive for the failed drive and still have a backup on hand. One could run a RAID to protect against drive failure (keep in mind drive failure is not the only casue of data loss) but the RAID must be backed up since RAID itself is NOT a backup.

 

The only reason I don't use data drives larger than 4tB is that is the largest size consumer SSD currently available.

One has to be proactive, not reactive, to ensure the safety of one's data so backup your data! And RAID is NOT a backup!

He was taking about parity RAID rebuilds. That would take such an obscene amount of time with 100tb drives.
