Google rebrands Google Drive to Google One

AlTech

In a rather surprising move, Google has rebranded their Google Drive offerings to Google One.

Quote

For some reason, Google is rebranding Google Drive storage plans under the name Google One. Along with the rebranding, Google is also improving its pricing in ways that give customers more options and more storage at lower prices. It marks the service’s first price cut in four years.

Google One plans start at the same place as Google Drive plans — $1.99 per month for 100GB of additional storage — but the situation improves after that. Google is introducing a new $2.99-per-month tier, which includes 200GB of storage, and it’s upgrading the $9.99-per-month tier to include 2TB of storage instead of 1TB.

We signed up for a 2TB storage option to try out Google One. The process is simple, you just head into Google Drive and click on Storage, then Upgrade Storage, to bring up all the possible upgrades.

The features they are offering with Google One are basically the same as Google Drive and the prices will remain the same.

As for the name change, we suspect Google decided to introduce the “One” brand to clarify that this storage isn’t just limited to Drive but is also used for Gmail and Photos. Ultimately, though, today’s changes largely amount to a different name on the same product, alongside two tweaked pricing tiers.

So yeah, I feel like this was a totally unnecessary move and really will just confuse normies in the short term.

You act as though you haven't seen the paradigm shifts over on YouTube that change nothing but make it senselessly less user friendly. :P

This is what Google does. Change things for the sake of changing things.

Thing is, they can get away with it too because there isn't a singular powerhouse to contest the level of intertwined in day-to-day computer technology usage that Google has.

Are they trying to drive customers to OneDrive by misleading those who don't know the difference between the two?

Thought of that first, but they could come into trouble by just putting an "i" in front

The idea is that Google Drive is the storage solution. Google One is a single subscription that includes Google Drive(Google One Storage?) space and other Google related features.

Didn't they already change it to 'Backup and Sync' not long ago?

Its probably the manager in charge of Google Drive handing out another easy raise/promotion to someone who spent a night w him.

No one there really give a shit because any announcement gives the company more publicity no matter how pointless it is.

Fookin rebrands. Everyone still, and will always, know of it as Google Drive.

Backup and Sync is the revamped Desktop Client for Google Drive. It got a new name because it was a massive revamp and they didn't want people confusing the old client with the new one when they were instructed to download it. Also it does stuff with Google Photos and stuff too now, not just Drive.

Google Drive is continuing to exist, it's not a rebranding of the storage system afaik just of the subscription plans. The Google One app just refers to it as "Storage" but it still links users to the Google Drive app and http://drive.google.com .

They should have committed went full Microsoft and rebranded it and old product so you can't search it anymore.

Like they should call it Google Reader or something.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Well, I hope that Google One is a better one. And the question is, how does Google Drive work and how much are Google One plan. I wish that this new features and pricing plan will really be beneficial to the users.

Bad decision, really bad decision. Especially because Google One is now such a generic name, especially with them already doing Android One. Google One does not give me any insight onto what the service really is. With OneDrive and iCloud it is much easier to tell what the service provides.

The only logical reason to make this decision is to appeal more to the enterprise market as Google One does sound more corporate.
