Apple plans to kill off 2010 and 2011 Mac Support with macOS 10.14 Mojave*

Apple has announced macOS 10.14 Mojave at WWDC 2018 which is coming out later this fall.

 

iMore reports that macOS 10.14 will drop support for almost all 2010 and all 2011 Macs.

 

The notable exception being the 2010 Mac Pro. 

 

So yeah, 2010 and 2011 MacBooKs, MacBook Airs and MacBookPros and iMacs will not receive macOS 10.14. 

 

The requirements are as follows:

• MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 or newer)
• Mac mini (Late 2012 or newer)
• iMac (Late 2012 or newer)
• iMac Pro (2017)
• Mac Pro (Late 2013, plus mid 2010 and mid 2012 models with recommended Metal-capable GPU)

 

As it is right now, if you want to run macOS 10.14 Mojave when it comes out, you'll need a 2012 Mac or in some cases a lot newer.

So yeah, hopefully this means prices of used Macs will come down quite a bit since only the 2012 or newer models should be sought after. It's also kind of chilling and scary that Apple has dropped both 2010 and 2011 Macs from support considering Apple's past track record of supporting macs. This could be a sign Apple is trying to increase the rate at which they are killing off support for devices.

Taken on their own I'd say not a big deal but Apple's rate of killing off device support seems to have increased in the past few years.

 

From 2013 to 2015 the requirements for macOS didn't change much. From 2016 onwards the requirements have changed a lot more.

 

Given this pattern I can only hope Apple doesn't kill off 2012 Mac support in 2019.

on the flip side I really think they have done shit with mac os i n a long time, and if it come at the cost of older device support, about time it gets some bigger updates.

Oh yeah those are the ones with botched NVIDIA GPUs that resulted to overheating or logic board failure. I can understand why Apple is no longer supporting those but damn even the Sandy Bridge MacBook Air?

The reason seems to be the fact that older Macs just aren't capable of Metal API graphics that are required for the Mojave as they are deprecating OpenGL and OpenCL with this release

I was pretty sure those are the ones with the botched AMD GPUs actually .

I don't know about Linux but I don't think it's the same for Windows 10 even if it's an issue with Intel drivers

That's a bit of an odd comparison. You're comparing two environments where you can actually legally obtain an ISO and install it on whatever you want and fuck with it to make it work vs a closed ecosystem.

Because windows doesn't change. The underlying structure of windows 10 is basically the same as vista. Other than DX12, Windows 8.1 and 10 are functionally identical past the UI.

 

There's a reason windows is like 40GB, and MacOS is like 10GB.

And yet somehow, my AMD ProBook (2011) still fully supports the 1803 Update (although with a few issues - clean install is the best route). What gives?

Intel was using old GPUs in their 2012-2014 Atom SoCs (Clovertrail) and the drivers for the old PowerVR GPU will no longer be updated for the Creators Update. Which means Microsoft changed something in Windows 10 Creators Update which made those GPU drivers no longer compatible. I think it's a small issue as I don't think Windows 8 tablets with Atom inside took off anyway but it's still worth mentioning.

True. I had a 2012 13-incher that I only sold last year. Actually ran League and shit at 1080 medium 40-50 fps

Not surprising. the 2011 model needed a ram upgrade to be able to run el captain well.

Which past? The one where they changed cpu architecture and dropped their entire previous lineup at one point?

 

I guess anyone who wants to keep using their macs with up to date software can install windows or a linux distro.

My PC in the attic from 2001 still works and could render videos too. Doesnt mean jack really.

Well, to be fair,  that space requirement is a pretty gross exaggeration considering Windows fits quite nicely within 32GB worth of eMMC with about 12GB or so of spare room left. It also works in 2 GB of RAM surprisingly well, though the same can't be said for certain browsers (hi Chrome).
