Pretty decent supported lifespan. They'll still be fine for a few years with an SSD even if you don't update. The old Macbook Pros really felt like Pro devices

Well this is a discussion about installing the Latest OSX on OLD apple computers.

Its about stopping support. Couldnt care less about install a modern OS on an almost decade old machine.

Well then is your 2001 PC still supported by the OS maker? I'd guess back then it was windows 2k or windows ME.

That was because of the PowerVR GPUs, the series from 2010 were used in iPhones and some other mobile chipsets and is something which would have affected very few people as these systems often has 1-2GB RAM.

The R9 series were launched 5 years ago yet they are very close to the RX x80 series which are still being produced, excluding Vega, which was designed to fit above the RX x80 series, the R9 series are only last generation. The same goes for Haswell.

my 2011 PC laptop is rocking windows 10 and it can do pretty much everything except play new games for obvious reasons, the i7 may be old but it can still hold himself. Seems like a waste of hardware for most common users.

Lenovo W700 (2009) took windows 10, but can't seem to enable all the desktop visual candy. 

 

What's apple bringing with the Mojave that needs the stronger GPU? Obviously needs Metal support, but what are they doing with it?

It seems they're just requiring it so they can deprecate OpenGL and OpenCL support (see other TNR thread).

 

Basically they'll probably remove OpenGL and OpenCL support entirely in macOS 10.15 or whatever the feature release after 10.14 is.

Nice to see Safari finally has tracking protection, but likely done for good PR since they're late to add something Firefox & Chrome have had for a while, and possibly because GDPR forced them to.

On topic, 2010 and 2011 macs still work just fine so this is a waste of hardware for the average user.

When I meant edit videos I meant actually editing complex things with software like final cut pro X and motion 5. A PC from 2001 could probably render a 1080p 3 minute video in Premiere in about 2 months if it's even supported

Microsoft earns from software, so they have every incentive to ensure their operating system runs on as many devices as possible.

Apple does too through both the IOS and Mac App Store. Which is likely the cause for the upcoming changes to the Mac App Store in 10.14 .

The old AMD GPUs in the deprecated models are not GCN, so it's probable that Metal couldn't be backported without substantial investment in a dead architecture.

 

As for why Metal is being pushed as a requirement, it's likely that Mac OS Mojave is using Metal exclusively to render the GUI. Theoretically, Apple could develop a software rasterizer for Metal (somewhat similar to Warp in Windows) that would allow the CPU to render the UI using the Metal api, even without a Metal supported GPU, though this would only be practical in desktops where power consumption isn't as big a concern.

 

Also, it surprises me no one remembers (or brought up) the "Mojave Experiment" marketing campaign for Windows Vista. What Apple is doing isn't dissimilar to what occured with Vista.

I also hope they don’t discontinue support for the 2012 Mac mini soon. It’s still a good day to day performer and the i7s were better than their successors.

As it is right now, if you want to run macOS 10.14 Mojave when it comes out, you'll need a 2012 Mac or in some cases a lot newer.

 

 

So yeah, hopefully this means prices of used Macs will come down quite a bit since only the 2012 or newer models should be sought after. It's also kind of chilling and scary that Apple has dropped both 2010 and 2011 Macs from support considering Apple's past track record of supporting macs. This could be a sign Apple is trying to increase the rate at which they are killing off support for devices.

Actually according to guys at Low End Mac, safe mode still fully relies on OpenGL to render the UI. It's possible with some hacking that some of these Mac's will still work.
