iPhone X is dead as consumers turn their backs on pricey smartphones

So, what I gathered from the second article (the only one I read, I imagine they both follow the same story) is that they're basing this off of an over supply of the 3D sensing chips. So, I just see this as Apple understands there isn't as large of a demand as they'd hoped, and they don't want to have too many chips around as it either A) won't be used in future devices or B) they have a different version of that chip coming out, and simply won't need to use the old one.

 

Will the phone be discontinued this year? Of course. When has a company ever kept the model around for more than one year?

 

As for the price, I think it's more of an experiment for Apple. See how high people are willing to go. After all, most phones in the US are subsidized anyway. They're also status symbols when it comes to Apple products, so it's not simply the device itself that the valuation comes from.

That is about grand a year.

I think your math is a little off there $750 =/= $1,000.

I'll agree with this, though I only really see it coming true over the last year or two, especially this year. The SD670 is a beast.

I do like a lot of the features we see in higher end phones, like the significantly better cameras. If you don't use that though, most people can get away with midrange with ease, and since they usually use lower powered chips they have better battery life.

I was referring to the post I quoted and if they do cut production then there will be less phones so they are more rare. But 70 million at $1,100 a piece. You wonder why Apple has almost a trillion dollars

The fact is that most people use their phones far more than their computers, which is the complete opposite of the demographic on this forum, and as a result, this forum values computers far more than phones -- regardless of whether or not that is the reality of the market. So, the fact that you can get a laptop for a similar price is irrelevant (especially when there are other laptops with similar margins that people consider good values).

So don't get an XPS. Get a zenbook or something. Obviously a large latop screen panel is more expensive than a tiny OLED mobile panel. 

 

I get the different use cases og smartphones and laptops, but man, the iPhone is stupidly expensive. The 256GB costs the same here as a Titan Xp.

Yeah, they do a good job of marketing themselves as a status symbol.

I just don't think Android people care about profit margins; profitability isn't going to make them like a company

You're right, a laptop does cost more to manufacture, but it also sells for more -- which is why I used the example of an XPS 13, which is commonly recommended by many people and is generally considered a good value, when in reality it's not much better than an iPhone X. And of course, you can get a cheaper laptop, just like you can get a cheaper phone -- no flagship products in any category offer the best price/performance.

 

Again, you don't have to get a flagship phone, just like you don't have to get a flagship laptop. Both carry a similar price premium.

I'm overestimating the costs of the XPS to be safe since I obviously can't see how much they pay for each part, if anything it would cost Dell less.

I totally want to see more and more phones out in the marketplace, then used phones become cheaper and cheaper. Sell a 64GB phone for pennies when the 6400GB is $10,000 And their screens will be so large you cant even put it in your front jean pocket and walk normally.

It didn’t hit Apples expected numbers but it’s more successful than any one phone by a long shot from 2017 and 2018. 

 

I’m either getting a X or an 8 Plus.

Actually quite often.

 

Apple tends to discontinue a product and replace it with a new one but they also more often than not keep last years model around and just lower the price. The SE,6s, and 7 are all on sale still. (The 6s line is still chugging along like a champ btw)

 

The latter is highly variable and it’s probably happening to the iPhone X because it is so damn expensive to make.

Hate to say it, but this is classic financial analyst "shock!  Panic!" crap meant to drum up business.

 

Apple is likely to stop producing the iPhone X because its replacement is (probably) coming in September.  Moreover, the analyst doesn't actually draw a definitive link between TSMC's oversupply and Apple having sales trouble.  For all he knows, the glut is because Apple is ordering different components or switching suppliers.

 

This isn't to deny that the iPhone X's high price has limited its potential sales and might weigh heavily on its last few months on the market (why buy the $999 phone that will soon be obsolete?), but this analyst is making doom-and-gloom proclamations solely to get media coverage from outlets that don't know any better.  The iPhone X is not "dead," it's just entering the last phase of its lifespan.

There's reports the 'affordable' X-like design will have an LCD, but for everything else... they're never coming back.  Never.  Repeat that until you understand it's completely true, and that it's not a bad thing.

Taking out features that users actually enjoy for the sole purpose of having skinny anorexic designs is never a good thing. I prefer authorizing payments with Touch ID rather than pressing a button on the side with Face ID.

I could care less about their profits, actually i'd rather be screwed a little less when buying an expensive phone. Not sure why we're on laptops now but Dell likely has much less profit margin while giving you higher end hardware in the XPS.

Seems to be an echo of "But 35% profits in the whole smartphone market"! Ok,and? It's a $1,000 status symbol people simply aren't buying.

I agree with that completely though you shouldn't be buying an iPhone then. Touch ID was nice, so was the headphone jack but those won't be back when they can sell facial scanning as being better,and not when Apple can sell you $200 pair of wireless earbuds, or especially when they can sell a phone with a large stupid screen notch for a grand.

I took Apple's bait and now I can seem to get rid of it because of the following reasons:

• timely software updates for bugs and security issues up to five years. Android phones are maxed out to 2 years of major Android releases and most if not all Android phones will only receive 36 months of security patches. 
• backing up of text messages to iCloud (No Android phone backs up text messages to Google Drive natively)
• iMessage and FaceTime especially FaceTime Audio for the times I have no cellular reception but have wifi
• I'm less likely to factory reset my iPhone, I do factory resets on my old LG G3 back in 2015-2016 every after 6 months
• The iPhone, iPad and the Mac work together with continuity. I'm not aware of anything in Android that can do that natively and not relying on third party services.

But I would say that Google Assistant is ahead than the dipshit Siri. This is probably an unpopular opinion but I think Siri is a little bit racist for failing to recognize English words and sentences spoken by a non-native English speaker. I never have those issues with Google Assistant.

AI is not inherently racist/ biased. It is a data collection issue that is yet to be solved. (China will probably win the race though)

Eh I dno about that. I'd say into the tens of millions, more than some entire companies, is great sales for a single handset.
