My opinions:

I honestly didn't know that thing costed about a grand. Dayumn that's expensive. When our family went to pick out new phones I thought my Galaxy S7 was a bit pricey and it had an MSRP of 669 USD. My first Smartphone was the iPhone 5c after I graduated HS. It was like magic compared to not having a smartphone, but that said I'm never going back to IOS from Android. I'm not giving up all the versatility, expandable storage and I'm not giving up the 3.5 jack. If my S7 ever became broken beyond repair I'd go with Samsung again or one of the other Android brands and probably below 500 USD at that. We got all our phones from Verizon because of some discount we got because of the company me and my mom work for. I know they had Samsung and LG, but I forget who else they had brands for.

Most plans tack on an extra $20+ a month to your plan for the "Free Phone" LOLOLOL

And you also need to be on the $50/m plan in order to get that "New Free Phone" LOLOLOL

 

That is about grand a year.

The iPhone X having lower sales than anticipated isn't surprising given that there have been rumors since right before the X launched that there would be full-screen X-like variants in 2018 for much less money ($700~) with an X+ being around the $1000 mark. I don't think even Apple expected the X to sell in the same high volumes given the price.

I feel like this is going to be something like the GTX Titans where you "pre-order" a powerful device/card at an extremely high price just for it to be re-released much cheaper later with the same/similar features in another device.

I remember AMPS brick phones and earlier bag phones. bag phones were nice because you could be out in the bush and have a signal. Today you could be out in the same spot, same tower location and the new phones have no signal. With the older AMPS frequency phones, all you have to do was short out certain electrical spots and you could listen in to converstaions on a random channel.

 

My money is best spent elsewhere when it comes to $80/m plans and $1000 mobile phones.

It's not out of the ordinary for Apple to release a first-gen product at a higher price point and then either refine it significantly (EX: Apple Watch) or drop prices substantially (EX: Retina Macs) the following generation.

I'd hardly call selling well over 70 million units per quarter a decline of sales. 

 

It's very probable that the iPhone X will be discontinued, or handed down to a lower price range due to a successor. 

 

I don't know where this analyst gets their information from, but they aren't too bright about Apple's practice or the numbers. That said I could be wrong

That's more or less the 4-4S jump. But IDK anymore since the 7-8 fiasco added unnecessary features, removed durability, but gave it the usual faster processor and,

I ditched getting flagships with the Galaxy Note 2, just used basic mid to low tier phones since, I've a renewal coming this August for another handset from my provider, and having a hard time finding something that does not get silly per month when they chuck in the handset, especially given how little I actually use one, when I've my laptop with me.

Well they already made a sizable profit on it tbh, granted that has a lot to do with how much the phone costs to produce vs its high retail price but still apple still lined their pockets with the thing.

 

Either way a 1000 dollar phone should not sell like it does, people are weird from my perspective

Personally I won't ever buy a top end flagship phone again. It's just not worth the cost for me. Few of the luxuries offered by flagship phones are of much use to me, with the probable exceptions of generous RAM and storage.

 

My phone (HTC 10) cost around $700 after tax when I bought it (more like paid half upfront and financed the rest) back in May 2016; and I've seen little from the phone that justifies the price. I should have gone with my other choice, which was the LG V10. That phone was offered at a nice discounted price, but the salespeople at Verizon are awfully persuasive...

 

One of my good RL buddies paid for an iPhone X entirely upfront, as his credit isn't great; and all he's used his phone for is texting, Facebook/Snapchat, and watching stuff on Twitch and Youtube. All things you can do on a phone that costs a fraction of the iPhone X's mammoth price.

It's not just you, any decent smartphone from the past few years is more than capable for most people, so a mid-tier phone is really just as good, unless there is some feature that you really want. The fact is we reached the point of "good enough" a long time ago (iPhone 5/S5 days), and since then we have seen more "life-improvement" features rather than truly necessary features like NFC, wireless charging, better/bigger displays, better cameras, better battery life, smaller bezels, faster SoC, etc...

Apple certainly isn't the only company making overpriced stuff. That Note 8 was extremely pricey at launch. For executives and other such VIPs, 1k is pocket change, however.

Most people who buy one either have the money and don't care how much it costs or are on an iphone upgrade plan. Most people don't own their phones they just make monthly payments until the new one and then they trade it in and get that
