I've got like $350 in Amazon points and I've been planning to blow my wad on a new graphics card, but with shortages I guess I'll keep stashing away.

Oof, output has taken a hit

Sold my 3080 XC3 Ultra and a 3070 XC3 Black.

Inbound and arriving on Sat and Tues are 2 x 3070 XC3 Ultra's and a 3080 FTW3 Ultra

Production will ramp up significantly in the next few days.

Config will be 3x 3070 XC3 Ultras and a 3080 FTW3 Ultra. Should be good for 15-16 million PPD.

from all the tear-downs i've seen, the paste on these isn't great. the only reason i haven't redone mine is because of the thermal putty and me being too lazy to clean all that mess up and then apply more

I don't see myself tearing it down until I put a water block on it.

What, not the KingPin? And you know you need two of them for SLI to get that extra 20% boost. 🤑

Can I ask why you got rid of the XC3 Black? Was there an issue or just an opportunity to get a slightly better cooler and/or binned GPU?

That's the card I'm looking at as it is the least expensive 2-slot EVGA 3070. Yes, the XC3 Ultra has a slightly higher (3 x 15MHz "bins" - 1770 vs 1725MHz) boost clock, but in my use case I plan on running it at the lowest power limit (99W or -55% under the default 220W Power Target) which, if the XC3 Ultra has similar targets and capabilities, should negate any improvements in Cooler Design.

If you can consider uploading the XC3 Ultra BIOS which ships with your card to TechPowerUp's darabase using GPU-Z as no one seems to have posted it's BIOS yet and that will show it's capabilities.

Only reason I got rid of the Black is because I am OCD and wanted 3 of the same cards and the Ultra is a slightly better bin.

I will upload the BIOS right now, i have uploaded BIOS's in the past but they never seem to publish them for some reason.

The coolers of the XC3 series are all the same for 3070 and 3080. My 3080 ran quite a bit hotter than the 3070's though

Perfect - Thanks - that shows the power limits.

I uploaded the BIOS to them for the 2070 Super Hybrid XC3 and they never published them either which is a shame as though they share the same revision as the air-cooled cards the fan profiles and targets are different to accommodate the pump and radiator fan.

Interesting. That model has a 240W Power Target versus the 220W on the Black and a 274W max versus 264W but both have similar lower power limits - 100 versus 99W.

Happy Holidays! I'll likely wait until the new year when, hopefully, the stock levels for the new GPUs will start improving.

Got a Ryzen 5600X. The performance of my GPU's has slightly improved. For example, my 3080 has not been this close to 6M PPD (On Windows), ever.

Screenshot_174.png.d6b3eab0063624dd95a34f47cefe3fe3.png

Interestingly, the CPU is clocking itself to 4.6 GHz, and using all cores on Folding, drops this. This is affecting the GPU performance, that was first noted a few months ago. My system overall PPD is around 13M, however, I do believe it could still go a little higher, with a little more optimization.

Will have to see next year, what, if any, GPU's I buy. Need something to replace my 2060 mini's. If nothing is available, I don't mind water cooling a GPU to make everything fit.

FoldyPuffJr is down right now, finished the WU yesterday and I plan on re-installing Xubuntu 20.04 and trying to get coolbits to work again like I had it working before! So hopefully later today it'll be folding again but doing so more efficiently! I'd like to bring power draw closer to 75W but stay in the 500-600K PPD range if possible. If it's not possible then I might take a break until I get something more efficient.

My HTPC is due a GPU upgrade, let me know if/when you're selling a 2060 mini at a reasonable price. How many cards are you running now? I know it's all Nvidia, so one physical CPU core per card for best performance is the rule and sadly it's a pretty hard rule. Nvidia drivers 'lock' the core to feed the card data, SMT cores don't seem to count or work nearly as well. I think we'd already talked about this though. So a 5600 should be able to run 6 cards at their full capacity, once you go past 6 cards you'll see all cards suffer loss in output as they start trying to share CPU cores. They don't even need to be fast CPU cores! Just need to be dedicated.

I really wonder what causes the massive differences in PPD overall...

3080 Windows average is 4.8M, but since I got mine 10 days ago my average is at about 5.7 and I've literally only had 1 WU out of 50 that was below average, and I'm occasionally losing 10-15% becasue of working and doing things that use the GPU like video conf calls while folding.

There must be a lot of people running with siginificantly lowered PLs or there are big differences between card models.

I haven't reduced PL becasue I found that at least with my card reducing it has huge PPD impact unlike with my previous 2080S and the 1070. Interestingly on this card raising the PL doesn't increase either PPD or power consumption when folding. Neither does overclocking, although this card's factory OC is already pretty much "balls to the walls" at 2055MHz, haven't been able to add more than a 40MHz offset without becoming unstable so they've done a good job and it's not worth bothering with the core clock.

Also I imagine people mostly fold while doing other stuff, and that must be quite a big portion of why linux is higher than Windows with most linux folders probably running on dedicated machines that have nothing else robbing GPU time.

Currently running 5 dedicated GPU's, and a sixth (1050 Ti) to render my desktop and videos. The mini's are the Gigabyte RTX 2060 MINI ITX OC. They have the same core as my 2080 super, TU104, and I'm able to overclock it, clock for clock, with my 2080s. It's stable, even with the power limiter at 78%. I did pull a 1070 out recently, as it was proving to be unreliable.

The limitation of the cores was considered when I bought the 5600x comparing to my older 3700x.

I'm going to monitor the performance, and see if the 1050 Ti is slowing down folding performance. It's not worth folding on that card now these days anyhow. One thing to note is, the PCIe utilization. It's higher than previous numbers show. For example, the 2060 using 48% of gen 3?

In terms of my CPU, I need to learn more about AMD's PBO. I've currently set this to the limits of my motherboard, and now my CPU is boosting to 4.6 GHz on all cores/threads under 100% load. The thing is, it's not boosting more, despite been within safe limits.Screenshot_177.thumb.png.cbb365c6c895d982d98f5cd15d14cbc2.png

With understanding of the PBO, I might be able to CPU fold along side my GPU's without affecting the performance, but more monitoring needs to be done.

Swap the 1050ti for an AMD card to do desktop duty, that'll free up one core for system overhead. You really ought to be running an 8 core CPU if you're running 6 cards AND using the PC for normal activities. When I tried to run 2 Nvidia cards on a 2 core CPU the result was that I had less output than with the single card I initially had. Adding a 4 core CPU to the system let both cards work and full speed. Removing one card but leaving the 4 core CPU let the single card do more work than it had been doing with the dual core CPU. Especially noticeable when I was doing some things on the computer while it was folding, it's not a computer I use for desktop things so I can just leave it alone to fold.

I think I've gotten further with my coolbits problems, seems to be an issue with Nvidia Optimus stuff and the latest driver. A lot of laptop users are having the same issues I'm having as well. Since I have an open PCIe slot I think I'll try the work around of adding an AMD card as a display out and maybe avoiding the problems. Maybe. Currently I'm not folding since I wiped and re-started with clean Xubuntu. I'll take a stab at it more tonight, I have a 7570 or 6570 I can run in there as display card and just use the open-source drivers.

Of course this is NOT ideal, it'll hurt airflow to the P106-100 somewhat, how badly will determine how OK I am with this solution or not. BIG SIGH! I mean I guess I could stick a riser in there but that's also not a great solution because that costs money.

How’s it going folks?

Tbh I stopped folding a while ago. No specific reason, just kept forgetting to turn it on after I was done gaming (yes, I fold on my one and only system).

Also, I like your new pfp
