When will the Ethereum mining craze end?

It's currently impossible to buy any AMD GPU or Nvidia GPU below a GTX 1080 anywhere right now. For those of us looking to build a gaming PC or upgrade our current GPUs (I'm in that boat right now), it's frustrating that people are buying GTX 1070s in sets of 6 to mine away their power bill and electricity produced by the planet's resources to make a little bit of money on the side that will eventually lose all of its value. A friend of mine is building a PC for 1440P gaming and content creation and barely managed to snag a Founder's Edition 1070 for $399 a week ago when they were in stock for a few minutes. GTX 1060s are now selling *used* for $350 all over Amazon and Craigslist. This is ridiculous. From what I gather from users on this forum, the craze has extended far beyond North America.

 

When will it end?

It's impossible to get AMD cards here (the Netherlands) that are not RX 550's or R5 250 or whatever and now all the not 'ITX versions' of the GTX 1060 are gone and pretty much all GTX 1070.

It's like all the options in order that I had in mind for my PC.

When will it end? 

Bitcoin has been going since 2009 so it could be years hahaha. It won't though. Also a vast majority aren't just sitting on etheruem coins. They flip them as soon as they get them and turn them into bitcoins or real money. Or they use nicehash and get bitcoins directly. This isn't new as 290Xs basically didn't exist during the bitcoin mining craze. I say in 4 months it will start to die completely. Then it happens again probably not as big though. It's just a whole lot of money moving which is potentially a good thing if people are using it to reinvest in the markets promoting business growth.

Just keeping this here as a i wouldn't count that out imo .

I still remember when the X11 mining algorithm was being touted as an ASIC-resistant algo . A few years later and there are x11 ASICs available everywhere.Somebody will manage to make ASIC eventually.

My RX470 shows about 2470 MB of memory used, while I'm mining in background and watching Youtube on second monitor. I assume about 200 MB of memory are used by the video playback and hardware decoding so about 2.2-2.3 GB are used by the etherheum miner software.

 

This big DAG file slowly increases in size as the mining difficulty goes up and this file is constantly read by the code running in the video card, that's why high frequency ram and wide bus width is important .. and wide bus width and high frequency memory controllers use lots of transistors, which raise the costs of ASICs substantially, enough to make them not worth manufacturing.

 

Eventually the DAG file will get very close to around 3.5+ GB and then all 4 GB cards would be useless, and a huge amount of them will show up for sale... but this could be 6 months, a year, maybe more. But even before that moment, the number of hashes per second will gradually decrease proportionally to this file size increase and it could be possible that at some point, the efficiency of these older cards would be much lower than the efficiency of newer cards (for example with 2048-4096 bit HBM2 memory) so there may be a huge amount of 4 GB cards sold so that they'll pay the difference and upgrade to newer more efficient cards.

For low volume of chips produced, you could maybe make a chip with the hash power of a RX 480 for 30-50$ each if you produce 5000 chips (let's say at least 20 wafers at $10000 for each wafer , or $200k investment)

You'd still have to use 4 or 8 GDDR5 memory chips (for 128bit or 256 bit bus) or maybe a 8 GB HBM2 chip but for a small run of 5000 pcs, these chips would be very expensive. Then you'd also have to make multilayer circuit board to route all those traces between your ASIC and the memory chips, and the VRM to push tens to hundreds of watts to your ASIC and memory chips...

By the time you're done, your ASIC is maybe 100-150$ when equivalent video card is 200-250$ ... not worth it, as you won't have resale value.

The programmers behind X11 were incredibly idiotic to use 11 algorithms that were submitted for possible use in SHA3 and then dare to call it ASIC resistant. One of the requirements for SHA3 was that the algorithms had to be able to be computed on an ASIC.

I hope it bursts soon so people get fucked. I wasnt mad until EVERY single fucking GPU got stolen for this shit. Here in Brazil the rx 580 strix is the same price as a 1080ti.

It is just impossible to upgrade, and the prices are ridiculous and miners still keep buying. That is what makes me really mad, they are making the prices go up 300% - and they are not showing signs of stopping!

This is going to last until the crypto mining GPUs are released, then the market will be flooded with cheap RX470-580s and 1060s and 1070s. 

 

As for the end of the mining craze, that's anybody's guess.  The bubble could burst soon, but then again it may crash and bounce back afterwards.  Que sera sera.

I will probably not end but AMD can go Nvidia way by nerfing integer performance on gaming oriented gpu. That will at least balance things out and make AMD availability at par with Nvidia.

The way I see it is that since Ethereum miners seem to mostly flip the coin and sell for Bitcoin or cash immediately, there is a bubble building that will have to burst soon. The issue is that if there is no market for the currency beyond mining and flipping, there is no inherent value. Unlike Bitcoin, which is used for many transactions of actual goods and services, the Ethereum market is artificially inflated and does not have any substantial markets beyond mining/flipping. This makes it a lot more volatile and gives it a lot less inherent value. Once people stop buying mined Ethereum the market will crash. From what I can tell the only way this will be avoided is if a large number of people start to use Ethereum in a lot of other diverse markets in order to give it more inherent value. Since Bitcoin is already widely adopted and fulfills this need just fine, I don't see why Ethereum would start to be used in this way.

 

I'm not an economics or markets expert but this seems to be the impression I get based off what I see in the market.

Are you getting weird fan behavior, speed fluctuations, and/or other issues with Link?

Are you running AIDA64, HWinfo, CAM, or HWmonitor? (ASUS suite & other monitoring software often have the same issue.)

Corsair Link has problems with some monitoring software so you may have to change some settings to get them to work smoothly.

-For AIDA64: First make sure you have the newest update installed, then, go to Preferences>Stability and make sure the "Corsair Link sensor support" box is checked and make sure the "Asetek LC sensor support" box is UNchecked.

-For HWinfo: manually disable all monitoring of the AIO sensors/components.

-For others: Disable any monitoring of Corsair AIO sensors.

That should fix the fan issue for some Corsair AIOs (H80i GT/v2, H110i GTX/H115i, H100i GTX and others made by Asetek). The problem is bad coding in Link that fights for AIO control with other programs. You can test if this worked by setting the fan speed in Link to 100%, if it doesn't fluctuate you are set and can change the curve to whatever. If that doesn't work or you're still having other issues then you probably still have a monitoring software interfering with the AIO/Link communications, find what it is and disable it.

TBH, the best way to get a decent GPU is to buy used with all the mining still going on. I'd rather buy a used 270X right now than a 470 mainly because the price is about a quarter of the price. I'm not sure when the mining will end but I think it might is likely to end by the end of this summer or even the by christmas so people can get their parts again. Nobody knows, depends what the manufacturers are going to do about it.

I heard that amd said that vega cards would not be good for mining, and polaris would still do it better. Hopefully this means that when vega launches we gamers can get some of those and miners will leave them more or less alone.

 

I was really hoping to build my first pc this summer but there is no way I am buying a gtx 1070 for $550 or a gtx 1060 for $350

Bitcoin is going to fork sometime later this year, so its value is going to drop significantly. Ethereum's bubble should also pop soon enough, as it had a massive crash yesterday which scared a lot of people.

Not to say a new GPU is a bad idea but isn't your current card plenty good enough for what games (assuming you play anything besides Overwatch) you play?

OK, so let's go over this though and why I think it's a tremendous waste of time and money.

 

You buy a GTX 1070 with the intention of mining. Or you buy 6, same logic still applies.

 

You add 200W of constant use to your power bill. Where I live, running it at peak hours of the day (8 AM and 5 PM, before and after school/work) jumps in price for electricity and the cost is extremely noticeable when running demanding appliances at these hours. You can take a look at the power bill we've received every month since I bought my GTX 970 and see it jump drastically from when I started playing Overwatch in October. We're paying about $12 per month more, though this is Portland and yes, it's expensive to live here, electricity being expensive too. 

 

So let's just say I run a GTX 1070 all day and add, say, $30 to my power bill every month. I bought this GTX 1070 for $400 and plan to sell it when the mining craze ends. I've warmed up my house due to the fact that I put this GPU in a PC in a room in my house that needs cooling because I use it (like I'm sure a majority of these people are). I have also wringed the hell out of my new GPU. I get $4 per day in Ethereum money, I spend a dollar per day on electricity costs for just the card, ignoring the fact that my room is now 5 degrees C hotter due to the fact that my GPU has been making the room nice and warm, probably add a few pennies per day for A/C (this is the summer and I don't see this craze lasting into the winter, or at least I hope it doesn't), and then there's the depreciation for the card for when I come to sell it when my days of mining are over. A card that has been used for mining won't be worth much used, maybe $150 for a GTX 1070 a bit over a year after its release with new GPUs to come soon, and I've just spent $150 on depreciation for the card.

 

Did I really make any money? No. I'd question if I managed to break even. This doesn't even account for the fact that some of the electricity was produced using resources that are not renewable so I've pretty much thrown the planet's resources into the trash.
