Turkey Blocked Access to Wikipedia

The Turkish government blocked access to Wikipedia recently, citing national security concerns.

Turkish officials reportedly asked the online encyclopedia to remove content by writers 'supporting terror.'

 

Wikipedia 'has started acting as part of the circles who carry out a smear campaign against Turkey in the international arena, rather than being cooperative in fight against terror,' ministry officials said, according to Al Jazeera. It tried to show Turkey 'at the same level and in cooperation with terror groups.'"

This has opened Turkey up to further criticism from human rights watchdogs.

Since political discussions have been banned on this forum, I'll have to keep my opinion somewhat short. This is worrying, because not only are they restricting their citizens' access to other people through certain social media blocks, but they're now directly and openly blocking access to large sources of information. It's starting to look like the Ministry of Truth.

 

This is not strictly pertaining to Turkey, but it has to do with freedom speech and information: this has become a problem all over the world now, not just in the Middle East, China, etc., but in the West as well. It's extremely worrying, and the fact that this isn't an extremely popular subject of discussion and public outcry is also worrying -- we're rolling over and letting the government do whatever it wants to us.

Wikipedia is fine for most things. Anything non political or without a significant social narrative is accurate.  Many universities have studied wikipedia to ascertain it's accuracy and effects.  It usually passes.  In fact, due to how rigorously articles are policed, companies are now employing professionals to write their wikipedia pages so the accuracy can't be questioned and it still leaves the company with net good PR.

They have a reason, honestly. Sometimes Wikipedia can be unreliable in information due to the fact that anybody can change the info. For example, recently Burger King put out a commercial that messes with Google Home devices. Users are able to change what a Whopper is, so whenever the TV (or a person that does not know what a Whopper is actually asks) it gives them a weird definition.

 

Then again, maybe Americans changed the definition for the word Turkey.

Just because someone is unreliable, or even outright lying, doesn't mean that he/she should be censored. The same goes for companies. If they lie, their standing and reputation in the public's eye will be diminished, but it doesn't mean that the government should censor them. By your logic, the government should put a ban on conversation because people can spread misinformation and extremist ideas through speech. Heck, a very large chunk of the news in Western nations is very, very often unreliable. It isn't censored.
