GoodBytes

UPDATE

Microsoft issues an official date of release, passing from "end of March" or April 11.

https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-creators-update-microsoft-announces-rollout-will-begin-on-april-11

It would seem that the company delayed the OS release to fix some final issues to reduce issues to users.

Good that they are taking their time.

Original News:

Microsoft releases a new version of Windows 10, dub: Creators Update (version: 1703, Build: 15063). Its codename is Redstone 2. This new version of Windows 10 is a massive update over the current version: Anniversary Update (Redstone 1). It features a fast array of features, improvements, and bug fixes. It is expected to be release in a few days, possibly 31st the latest.

While waiting (ISO download links will be available here once it is officially released for those who prefer to a clean install), here is a bit a reading on what is new:

What is new?

Start Menu

The Start Menu gets a new option allowing you to have a new more compact Start Menu.

Under Start > Settings > Personalization > Start, you have the option “Show app list in Start menu”.

start menu option.PNG

If you disable it, your start menu will pass from this:

58d8ece14d92d_StartMenumax.PNG.97c9a2435def76475b9245efc4d1cdf4.PNG

To this more compact layout:

Start_Menu.png.02f7e89cef7bc2be28be9e3f89a3070f.png

Under such layout mode, you can access the app list with the second option on the left side:

applist_button.png.9e0133f41b49ffcc150f1dc6f187ea1a.png

When pressed, will show the following:

Allapplist.PNG.8ac5065d1c127acb0764a493744d266d.PNG

The Start menu can now do folders from live tiles. Simply drag a tile over another one, and the 2 items will in a folder. You can add additional items by dragging other tiles to the now created folder.

For example, here I put all my games at the bottom into a live tile:

Clicking on it, will expand the folder:

These folder tile can also be resized as well, showing more tiles inside the folder. Just right-click on the folder go to, Resize, and pick a size.

Edge

Edge web browser got a number of improvements. Its rendering engine is now better, a lot more stable, faster, and more secure. It also continues to support more of the web standards resulting in an increase website support. Also, the web browser now has ‘Click to run’ on Flash plugin feature which is enabled by default. This means that Flash content won’t be loaded until you tell it to.

As for the web browser interface, it features:

Set tabs aside:

When you have many tabs opens, say related to a certain topic, like a research you are doing on something, you can Set aside all your tabs for later viewing, and work with a new set of tabs. When you want to return to your research, you can just set aside your current tab, and restore the tabs you were using before in a click (well, 2 clicks). And yes, if you close Edge, the tabs that were set aside, will still be there in the list. To do this, you have these new buttons right before your tabs:
58d8ecda767b6_edgetabaside.PNG.af5209042067bfaf9c8f263ca7d0d1c8.PNG

The first one to the left, shows you a panel with previously set aside tabs which you can restore one by one or in full, and a following button sets aside all currently open tabs. And yes, you can have different groups. So, you can do your research, set a side, do another research on a different topic, set aside, do some YouTube, set aside, and return back to your first research with all the tabs you had open, then switch to the second research or back to YouTube. If you work with a lot of tabs, this is great to regroup your tabs, and not have a bunch of them open idling on the back, consuming system resources, and then try to find what you were looking for. As you try to search through your tabs. You can also share a group of tabs with people. Like say you can share all your tabs that were set aside on a topic to your group project partner via e-mail.

Tab Preview

You now have an arrow button the right of your tabs, when you click on it, it shows you a thumbnail preview of your open tabs for you to have an easier time finding what you were looking for.

Web payment API support

Make payments online easy. All personal information are stored locally and filled up automatically for fast checkout. That is, if the website support this feature, of course.

walletui.png.37a54ce49e920451294ccb5b93f671eb.png

Cortana

Cortana gets new features and improvements in this build. As new features, you have:

Pick up where I left off…

This feature makes Cortana continue your session from 1 PC to another (assuming you have the same software installed between). For example, you work on your desktop, then you need to go. So you pick up your laptop, login, click on Cortana, and you’ll find the option “Pick up where I left off”, clicking on that will open all your programs from your desktop.

 Settings

Settings panel got some big changes in terms of layout, being more organized, and features more options being passed from the old Control Panel to the Settings panel, as well as new set of new options:

Settings.PNG.3541341083ab73d290b2b043e60cbebf.PNG

Night Light

You can uninstall your f.lux app now, and use Windows 10 built-in Night light mode. This option adjust the colors of your display to reduce blue light. It is said, although no conclusive research has been done yet, that blue light ‘causes some people to have sleep problem when they use their computer at night. This is more of an issue if your monitor is, like many, uses “white” LED backlight. White LED backlight is sadly not white, it is a very cold white, even on the age of being light blue more than anything. This results that all colors being displayed gets that blue tint. White appears cold white, and all colors have this extra blue to it. Now, premium monitors use other backlight technologies, or uses yellow phosphor layer to adjust the color of the backlight. Some premium TVs feature Quantum Dot technology to adjust the backlight color. But most people, uses a monitor that is simply white LEDs on the back.

Night Light can be enabled in the Settings panels under System > Display. It is configurable to adjust how much you want Windows to reduce the blue light via a slider, and can set to follow the time of day, or enable itself at a specific time. So, if you turn it on, it takes times before you see the image of the screen turn more yellow. The transition between being enabled and disabled one is a smooth one. The option can also be enabled or disabled from the action center quick notification.

Storage Sense

This new feature adds a new task to the system maintenance schedule when enabled (Settings > System > Storage), which cleans temporary files and recycle bin files that have been in there for more than 30 days. It is customizable. This is off by default

Lock down your account to block further Win32 apps from being installed.

Settings up an account to a family member that isn’t tech savvy, but, you don’t want to set them a limited standard account only, needing you every time they install a software? This new mode allows Win32 programs already installed to run on the system just fine, but any further exe acquired outside be blocked, or show a warning (up to you). When blocked, only apps from the Windows Store can be installed (whether they are Win32 apps or Universal Apps). Basically, you are locking down the system to allow only programs from trusted source to be ran. This allows you to block viruses being distributed as: “image.jpg.exe” through e-mail, or downloaded, it will block randomware and malware as well, but allow any app and games to be downloaded from the Windows Store, or needs you to install it (either run the exe as admin, or go the admin account, disable the lock, and run the setup). The option is disabled by default.

It is found under Settings > Apps > App & features.

Custom color

Windows 10 allows you to pick custom colors for your accent color and background color.

Themes

Since Windows 10, with the new Settings panel, Theme got obstructed, and difficult to access to setup. Now, Microsoft is bringing Theme to the Settings panel, and integrated Themes to the Windows Store. You can download for free a vast collection of themes, and you can buy some if the author chooses to sell it. All the Windows 7 ones are now here for free to download, as it was before, including new ones.

themes.PNG.5210237beaefc7a4cd2bb014f6bdc877.PNG

Game Stream

Integrated with Windows 10 now, is the ability to easily stream your game. It is done via the Game Bar, a bar that appears when you do Win+G on your keyboard. Just open the game bar (Win+G), and click on the Broadcast button. That simple. It streams with the video streaming service called Beam. You can your chat while you game, and see what your viewer see. And yes, you can have your webcam show as well.

Game Mode

Game Mode is a feature that Microsoft says that will be continuous development over time. The feature allows to maximize performance out of your games. Up to now, it affects more UWP made games, than Win32. However, UWP needs this a lot more than Win32 made games, which generarly run slower than the Win32 counterpart due of being at a higher level. It brings the game to the same level as Win32. As for Win32 game, the performance benefits is harder to see, especially if you have a powerful system. What it does is that allocates more resources to your running game than background programs, allowing you get a more steady and solid fps experience as you play, and lose performance because something on the back kicked in (say for example something happening in a website you had loaded in your web browser before you game). Nothing ground breaking, but nice to have nonetheless.

Game Bar Settings

Now, the Game bar settings which used to be under the Xbox app, have been moved to the Settings panel. You will notice a new item in the Settings panel called: “Gaming”. Inside you’ll find options for: Game bar, Game DVR, Broadcasting, and Game Mode.

Reset Apps (UWP)

If you have a universal app that is not working right, you can now reset the app. Simple go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features, pick a Universal App, click on “Advanced options”, and hit on the Reset button.

Windows Update – Pause

Windows now allows you to temporary pause updates from being installed on your computer. Paused update can be paused for up to 7 days. So if you plan to do something important and want to ensure no Windows Update kicks-in, you can pause it.

Windows Update – Active Hours

Active Hours is already there in Windows 10 Anniversary Update. It allows you to specify a time range where you don’t want Windows Update to start. Say, you can put your working hours. So, what’s new about it? Under the Anniversary update you could specify a time range for up to 12h. Now, you can push this further to 18h

Windows Update – Notify before restart

Now Windows 10 will notify you, like the good old days, that it needs to restart your PC.

windows-update-prompt-schedule.png.eb27ef611411dca6a4675e5c5ef1f7dc.png

This notification will pop-up, if you have the option “Show more notification” enabled under: Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Restart Options. It allows you to Snooze it, which will show up again at a later time, pick a time where you want your system to restart at, or restart now.

Windows Update – Reduce download size for future OS marge updates

Up to 35% in reduction in download size when you upgrade to a major version of Windows 10 to another. Meaning, when Redstone 3 will be release by the end of the year (estimated), the Windows update will be drastically smaller. This is more biennial to those who are in the Insider program (a feature they have been enjoying for a while now), as new build of the next version of Windows are delivered approximately once a week if they are in the Fast ring.

eBooks

If you show open the Store app, you will notice a new section at the top called “Books”. From here you can buy eBooks (which surprisingly, I have found eBook to be cheaper there than on Amazon, so good!). How to view eBooks? Edge web browser now support eBooks. It features presentation options as well, and properly displays the content.

Paint 3D

New Microsoft Paint! The last time Paint got an update was with Windows 7, where it got a very much needed update from the previous version, bringing up to speed to a basic image editor. Now, Paint got updated again, with 3D support.

There is a lot to write here on what you can do, but here is Microsoft video showing a bit of the app in action. The software also has a community which wide range of 3D object done in Paint 3D or other 3D software that you can download and import in your creation.

paint3d.png.e44568e26e8336dd38ed61711cd758bb.png

And yes, the old Paint program is still there.

Windows Defender

Windows Defender got a much needed overhaul to its interface, and brings security related options to it to regroup everything together.

New Out-of-Box experience

When you first install or startup a purchase Windows 10 system, the first setup screen, which is called Out-of-Box experience, can be pretty complicated and uninviting for many non-tech savvy people. Microsoft is addressing this by simplifying the experience. It does this by simplifying the layout experience, but still have the same options as before. Basically, it re-ranged everything. In addition, it includes Cortana, with voice recognition to pass most screen of this setup stage.

OOBE2.thumb.png.da36ad4a084ec45399c89e8624c556fd.png

Also, now you no more have “Express” and “Custom” option on the Out-of-Box experience. And Privacy settings are always shown towards the end. The text has been updated to make a bit more clear as well, on what does what. When you disable an option, it shows you what impact it will happen to your experience.

OOBE4.png.6c9de7fcfa4a7876287f8e32af9243f9.png

It must be noted that you will not see this screen unless you re-install Windows with Windows 10 Creators Update version. However, you can head over to Sat rt > Settings > Privacy to see all available options, and more. It does include some changes over the previous version of Windows 10, if you wonder.

Windows Hello

If your device support Windows Hello, you will notice that Windows Hello is now much faster than before, and features improved facial/iris recognition.

Mixed Reality

Windows 10 Creators Update bring VR and AR support within the OS, with its new Mixed Reality features. If you have a VR or AR headset, you’ll notice a new option in the Settings panel. When enabled, and setup via the Mixed Reality Portal app, a new app introduced in this version of Windows 10, you can have a virtual reality desktop environment that you can interact with.

Improved High-DPI support

The biggest problem in Windows, at a user level who has a high-resolution display for its size, is trying to add to old or unsupported software high-DPI aware support, so that the application appears larger, and is usable. Sadly, this is tricky due to the numerous and custom GUI framework used by a variety of software. Adding support, from a developer perspective, can be easy if the framework they use has support for it, or can be difficult if it doesn’t, or not properly, where it would require an entire recoding of the GUI, potentially, due to the switch to another framework. In the case that they use their own custom framework, like Steam, it would require further work on that front to be done first. Something that most devs aren’t willing to do unless they are a heavy demand from its used done through its support channel.

In the meantime, Microsoft can only bring compatibility options to its user to try and make the experience better.

highdpi.PNG.f22067e6cac2962ad898a7bee72fd47a.PNG

Under the Compatibility tab, you will notice new set of option for non-supported High-DPI applications.

You have now 3 modes you can pick:

  1. Application: Windows to stop all DPI scaling and let the application scale itself if it has any sort of support. Else the application will not scale at all, and remain small. Some people might prefer to use a smaller application, then to have it be scaled up but blurry, or have content cut out or other visual issues.

  2. System: Windows will stretch the application to be large like a small image made bigger, and apply smoothing effect on it so that everything isn’t blocky/pixelated and hard to read. The result is that is while the program is larger and therefore easier to use, the text and images that the program contains will be blurry due to the smoothing effect.

  3. System (Enhanced): This only works with GDI applications. For applications not using GDI, it will not do anything. What is does is that it attempts to scale the GDI-based content larger within the applications, making the text crisper and easier to read over “System”, while being large.

Native Wireless 802.11ad support

Got a new 802.11ad wireless card? Well Windows 10 now has native support for it. Wireless 802.11ad offers theoretically up to 7 Gbps of throughput. It operates on the 60GHz wireless range, which means that the range is super short, because the oxygen is what interfere with the signal. So further apart you are, the slower your connection will be (reduced signal strength).

Precision Touchpad improvements

Got a laptop or convertible system with that uses Microsoft Precision Touchpad drivers? Well excellent news, your very good to excellent touchpad (depending on your device) will get a nice boost., with improved tracking and a long list of new features, with many nicely customizable. These new features are found under Settings > Devices > Touchpads

On-Screen, virtual touchpad

We have a virtual touch screen keyboard, now we have the virtual touch screen touchpad. What’s the point? It is aimed at tablets to allow to control their cursor on a second non-touch screen. For example, if their Windows tablet is connected to an external display or projector and not set as clone, with the virtual touchpad, they can navigate the cursor that has traveled to the other screen to interact with programs and Windows itself. The virtual touchpad stays on top of all your windows, and is draggable. It supports multi-touch and gestures. You can use your finger or thumb to navigate the cursor on the screen.

Picture-in-Picture mode

Universal Apps can now can have a floating mini panel on your desktop, allowing you to have a mini video player window float on your desktop, or Skype video chat window with the new Skype app, which is now out of Preview. The panel is draggable, and can be interacted.

For example, the Movie & TV video player app now has a new button where, when you press it, it goes in Picture-in-Picture mode, where you have this mini video player view that floats above your windows, which you can drag around. By default, it is positioned at the top right corner of the screen, with spacing at the top to not interfere with maximized windowed title bar buttons (minimize, restore, close buttons).

PiP.PNG.015fe34b2c2f672bff7a0b90f2fae2dc.PNG

Dynamic Lock

All you need is Bluetooth on your phone, and in your PC. Dynamic Lock is a feature where you can connect your mobile phone to your system via Bluetooth. Windows measures the distance between you and the computer Bluetooth module, and when you walk away from the system, it locks the system for you.

All the Apps got updated greatly!

Be sure to checkout every app, they have all been updated greatly. For example, Maps got a new rendering engine, you can set multiple point in your itinerary, you can use the pen to draw and plan, and more. That is just a few things from 1 app.  If I cover all of them, this thread will be extremely long. Beside it is fun to discover, when you'll upgrade :)

And lots more, including lots of improvements for non-Latin based languages.

Expect to see this update in the coming days, as Microsoft is actively preparing for it.

Are you excited or interested in this  new update? Are you ready to update?

Oh yes, forgot to mention:

Separation of Windows Services

If your system has more than 3.5GB of RAM, Windows 10 will now separate all its services as separate processes. This means that under Task manager > Detail tab, you'll see a wall of "svchost.exe". Why? The separation of services to individual processes, does consume a bit more RAM over when they are regrouped, but gives the following advantages:

  • Increase in transparency. You see which service consumes how much system resources (CPU, RAM, disk).

  • No guess work. You can now see which service exactly is consuming your system resources, and can better identify the faulty service that has a problem on your side, and can take proper action, instead of guessing your way, and trying random things.

  • Increase reliability. Similarly to how Chrome or Edge works, where if a tab crashes, not the entire web browser dies, but rather just the tab. If a service crash (say your Audio due to a buggy drivers, for example), then only that service will crash, and will not take down other services it regrouped with it.

  • Increase security. By separating each service as its own process,  it prevent exploits from entering through one service to hijack the other service within the same process. In addition, it allows IT to set permissions for each services without affecting other services.

Now, if you check the Process tab, it is more clear. You see each service by name:

58da81d2ba4dc_taskmanagerprocess.PNG.bb9bbc57ab1de82f6e125b189a063aa0.PNG

Bash

If you use the Linux subsystem in Windows 10, you'll be please to hear that Windows 10 Creators Update features an updated version of Ubuntu. It is now using Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS. And that the sub system features a long list of improvements and bug fixes. You can see the release notes here: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/commandline/wsl/release_notes

Surprise discoveries

  • Thanks to @NumLock21. ReFs is a format able format option of a drive. Looks like it isn't bootable one (so you can't have WIndows on it), but very nice feature.
    ReFs.png.c08bbec1c41799255129b8429a7e4acd.png

  • MBR to GPT conversion tool is included in Windows 10. This tool give you the ability to convert your drive from MBR to GPT partition style so that your system is fully UEFI ready. This is great for those who started with Windows 7 on a fully UEFI compatible motherboard, and went to Windows 10. Normally, you need to do a full drive wipe, and restart from scratch. This tool keep your data, and does the conversion. More information, and tutorial on to use the tool (fairly easy) here.

From a business perspective where we have server 2012 R2, thus cant yet fully control all parts of win10, i love the new update options, especially setting an 18 hour time range.  I think the dynamic lock is pretty nifty and will likely test it out.

I dont get why youd want to block win32 applications though.

Now its opt-in, later opt-out. Then they just lock out win32 apps in home and maybe pro under guise of some lie like protecting your PC...

(They showed several times that they use underhanded tactics if needed so its a possible scenario.)

It took them to creators update to fix my biggest pet peeve with Windows 10?  I guess it's better than the one with Anniversary update where obtrusive updates can be compared to harassment and non-consensual relationships.

What would happen if I disabled it all? I don't know if their new privacy settings would ease my concerns about Windows 10's creepy data collection. I don't know about you but I trust Google more than Microsoft lately when it comes to privacy if you ask me. There's a reason I use Gmail instead of Outlook.

There is more that meets the eye

Awesome!

Can't wait to try them out. Some of the features, like themes accent color. Isn't that already available in the current build?

I heard about the new 802.11AD and wanted my new router to support that. But I was forced to get one sooner than I expected.

So no 802.11AD for me :(

I want to ask, can I turn off Cortana on the creators update like how it used to be in pre-Anniversary update?

You're funny. :)

No you can't.

What would happen if I disabled it all? I don't know if their new privacy settings would ease my concerns about Windows 10's creepy data collection. I don't know about you but I trust Google more than Microsoft lately when it comes to privacy if you ask me. There's a reason I use Gmail instead of Outlook.

I trust Microsoft over Google any day now. The simple fact that Google hides deeply their privacy policy so that you need to be determined to know what they do with their data, and not have it in plain sight in plain English, says a lot.

But anyway, to answer you, you can't disable it all, same as before. Even if you have Server or Enterprise.  And, even if you use tools that claims that it does. They never worked. You can only reduce it. Enterprise, Education, and Server edition can be reduced a step further over Pro and Home, but not disable it in full. Nothing has changed on that front between past, current and coming up (Creators Update). All options are under Start > Settings > Privacy as always.

Edge web browser got a number of improvements. Its rendering engine is now better, a lot more stable, faster, and more secure. (Emphasis added)

I don't know. There's a hacking contest called Pwn2Own in Vancouver a few days ago and the weakest browser in terms of resisting exploits is Edge. [Here] and [Here] Google Chrome on the other hand remained unscathed which means Google does sandboxing better than Microsoft.

That sucks. I just want to have a search bar without a creepy voice assistant. I mean it's easier to type .xlsx on the search bar than asking her "Show me excel files". Also, Cortana can't be a dude unlike Siri.

I guess Microsoft is catching up with Google to become a big brother.

Sorry. i meant that the distance for a good reception and get that max speed (which is also theoretical) is very short. We are talking about a small room distance with direct line of sight. If you have anything in between your device and router, or you go at a higher distance, the signal strength will reduce drastically, and that will affect your connect speed.

What's the point then? You ask. Might as well use a wire, you say. Well, think for specific situations, like imagine a VR headset that has no real hardware, that allows full movement without wire. All it has a small battery, and everything is streamed from your PC in the same room. Kinda like the WiiU Gamepad controller, where it has no processing hardware inside the controller, but stream the video/audio from the console to the controller.

Yup. Microsoft said that the security of the web browser is higher on Creators Update, and has much improved sandbox to block system attacks. I don't know if the issues found have been fixed or not yet, or will be soon via a cumulative update soon in the Creators Update.

The voice  listening thing can be disabled. And it is, by default. And you can disabled "Get to know me" which is also disabled by default. So all Cortana can do, is show you Store and Bing relevant results with your search (over files/programs you have on your system)

inb4 memes about how bad Windows 10 is.

Am very much looking forward to this update. Too bad the "project neon" thing isn't coming with it, if it even exists.

You can download the ISO file and extract it on a USB flash drive with your favorite ISO to USB tool when it will be released. You can start the upgrade by inserting your USB flash drive, start the setup, and pick Upgrade.

Because 30+ Svchosts is much easier to read than 15 I already have

Yea. Several other features didn't make it as well. They are all being retargetted for release with Redstone 3, which is expected to be end of the year

You can right-click on them, and pick "Go to Service", and you can show the "Command Line" columns and you can see the service name.

That is under details.

If you look "Processes", you can see each service by name. I forgot to mention this. I'll add it. Thanks

60GHz is like the 5GHz, It only works when your in the same room as the router or direct line of sight. Go to the next room and 5GHz cuts off. I just don't get how that word "fast" fits in? The further you are, the slower your connection will be "fast".

The further I am from my AD router, the slower my connection. If I get closer to it, my internet gets faster. <---- This for me, make sense.

I hope so. Whenever Microsoft said they made something more secure, I tend to take it with a grain of salt. I think the problem with Edge is that is is tied too deep to the operating system. A browser process might be placed in their version of sandbox called "AppContainer (since Windows 8)" but since it's tied deeper to the OS, an attacker probably can find it easier to find exploits to escape the sandbox and make system calls to the OS (elevation of privileges). So unless a security researcher can say Edge's has been hardened in Creators Update, I'm sticking to Chrome.

I wonder if an AD router will get something similar to AC's beamforming. ?

802.11AD is meant for wireless docking stations which are next to the device being used, not as an addition for AC/A/B/G/N, so it's range shouldn't be an issue.

Oh, Magnanimous Soft, thank you so much for this gracious act of kindness, I'll promise you'll have my your computer back asap!

I guess you never try to troubleshoot issue with it then and how much of a pain it is to narrow down the issue.

Now its more granular so you can actually fucking see what service under each svchost is using in terms of process and memory instead of killing services manually until the culprit shows it self.
