Nintendo Switch Teardown appears on the web - easy repair - Tegra what?

Some Chinese person has gotten its hand on a Nintendo Switch and did a tear-down. Now, we don't know if this is legit, it could be a dev unit or some in dev model, or a very well done fake. So, it might be best to wait for the official console release for some official tear-down pictures (let alone high-quality images).

 

The exception of these images source, is the first one is from a German site that has pulled the image. The site only removed the back cover of the unite, or so they claim, and that is all. They stopped there. They probably opened their review unit.

So, assuming the above picture is real, we can see that this massive metal shield which probably acts as a heatsink to spread the heat of the system so that it doesn't feel hot. We can see the small system fan which we know kicks in mostly when docked as the CPU/GPU chip clocks faster, and probably adds strength to the device against drops to some level.

 

Removing that Nvidia shield plate (see what I did here.. I know, I am hilarious!), should make you see the full internals of the system, which the Chinese source reveal:

From the above image, we can see that the battery is NOT soldered on. It is held by a connector which is already disconnected on the picture above.

The small hole at the bottom right of the system is game card slot module which has been detached. Bellow is the picture of that detached unit.

We can see it also has the headphone/mic/headset plug with it. If either breaks, the module can be replaced.

As you notice the storage chip is not soldered in. So that means that Nintendo could be releasing other capacities of the console unit later on without too much difficulty. We do know that the dev kit of the Switch features 64GB of storage. And while we have the problem of cloning the data from chip to another, it could open doors if a way is found, to allow people who have no problem opening their system apart and upgrade the internal storage. But I think this is more wishful thinking unless some crazy person made a drive clone system for the Switch and make it available for cheap. But none the less, very cool.

 

And now, for the heart and brain of the console:

We can see the Nvidia Custom Tegra chip, with 4GB of RAM. Yes, the Tegra SoC is tiny. Smaller than the DS cartridge.

What is interesting with this chip, is that the model number doesn't match the Tegra X1 chip model found in other devices such as the Shield TV or the Google Pixel C Tablet. The numbers of the chip doesn't point to anything. They are all unique.

 

HOWEVER, A French website managed to get its hands on a 2017 Shield TV, with the same chip:

This could indicate that this is a second revision of the Tegra X1 chip. Where it is a die shrink version of the chip allowing the chip to operate cooler and be more power efficient. In other words, this indicates that it could be a Pascal chip, or have some Pascal features inside (kinda like a hybrid), helping gain a nice boost of performance out of the X1. This could also confirm the 100MHz boost clock over the X1, a specs that didn't match the Tegra X1 that was mentioned in past leak of the specs of this system. One of such feature that could have been added to the chip (if my speculation is true to some level), is the VR improvements technologies and memory compression feature from Pascal (a key, performance boost feature that we enjoy on GeForce 1000 series). We do know that Nintendo has been looking into VR with the Switch. We saw patents and the company officially mentioned that they are looking into it. As this was in consideration for a long time, it could easily have ask Nvidia to include Pascal advancement for VR in it in this custom chip... so might as well add that memory compression tech.

 

So, the chip might not be an official "Tegra P1" in terms of specs, and we know its not an official "Tegra X1". Looks like it is an in between chip. So, we are looking at a die shrink Maxwell + maybe some or all Pascal features set related to boosting performance in games, which we have seen has helped a lot the 1000 series GeForce graphics card performance.

 

Interestingly though, the Shield TV 2017 model still has 3GB of RAM, like all other Tegra X1 chip powered small systems, and not 4GB LPDDR4 like the Switch.

The images otherwise confirm a sizable fan—about the same size as the Switch's cartridge slot—along with an L-shaped circuit board that holds, among other components, an Nvidia-manufactured SoC and two possible DIMMs of RAM (with no helpful labels clarifying their size, speed, or other specs; based on known specs, these could be two DIMMs of 2GB RAM each). Importantly, this teardown shows ribbons at the exact points that the removable Joy-Con controllers would interface with the system when attached in its "portable" mode. A USB Type-C slot on the circuit board is positioned to accept the double-duty task of receiving power and transmitting external video when the Switch is docked in a TV stand, and the rest of the components appear to fit quite snugly in the system's thin footprint (whose measurements still haven't been confirmed, other than a 6.2" diagonal on the touchscreen).

If this Nvidia chip is legitimate, then its printed code is interesting, because it contains a code label of "UDNX02-A2." We know the Switch is set to contain a Tegra chip, and we had been led to believe that this would be much like the X1 found in Nvidia's Shield devices. But this "A2" designation, unlike the "A1" printed on existing X1 chips, could mean we're getting a significant change to the design.

 

That may very well be a shrink to a 16nm process, or we could actually be getting a surprise bump from the older Maxwell architecture to the newer Pascal.

So, as we can see, if something breaks on your Switch, you can most likely go to a shop and have the part replaced without much difficulty, or you can buy the part on eBay and do it yourself if you have the tools in hand. You are not stuck at buying a new entire console for nothing.

i would really praise nintendo if these parts are indeed easily replacable. but the fuckers are probably going to hold it together with some bullshit new security screws ill have to order a new driver for from aliexpress >:(

they're not tri wing, least the ones I have. There those older proprietary Nintendo ones, and I like them much better. I strip triwings all the time meanwhile.

could this be why nVidia dropped their planned SHIELD tablet - they found Nintendo as a customer for all those chips and not involve themselves in the manufacturing, distribution and warranty of the darn things

 

Nintendo has way bigger market reach than nVidia could hope for the SHIELD tablet

It has a micro SD slot for that exact purpose so its kinda overkill to take apart the console to replace the internal memory

Very true, it didn't come to mind at the moment of typing. I have updated my speculation.

However, several of the features mentioned could have been ported to this new revision. Nvidia did say "latest generation", and Nvidia nor Nintendo, or any leaks called it officially a Tegra X1. It was just assumed based on the specs to be Tegra X1. So, I think/expect that it to has more to it then just a die shrink. If not, Nvidia would have not used the wording they did. It would just say how powerful it is or something.

oh yea you're right, just looked at the cartridges for mine and they are indeed like that. i probably got confused with my n64 to gameboy converter.

Well.. does it matter the specs? The 3DS has abysmal specs even for when the console was released, and yet it has full third party support. People still bought the system as well, especially at the right price (and I am sure Nintendo has the possibility of dropping the Switch price by $50 if sales aren't as expected). Vita didn't stand a chance against the 3DS. People with the 3DS has loads of fun, despite the low specs. The question is, why do you care so much about specs? Isn't the deciding factor be the games and not the specs?

 

But yes, I don't think we will ever know until homebrew comes a long and benchmarks tools are done. Heck, we don't really know for sure the specs of the CPU in the WiiU to this day. Some measurement were done on clock rate (which we can't really compare to anything beside the XBox 360 which also used the same PowerPC architecture), and we know it is a 3 core CPU and a few other specs thanks to x-ray shots. But we know nothing more about its actual performance of the chip. Mind you, I don't think anyone really cares about it today.. I mean the console is dead. But, all to say, I expect the same story with the Switch. If the GPU has some of the tech of Pascal... like the big one: memory compression. There is nothing we can do to really know. This whole system is hidden from game devs, games itself, benchmark tools, and us. We just see the end result which we can compare.

 

Then again, the Shield TV 2017 model, looks like has the same chip as the Switch. So, game performance can be compared between the 2 consoles. HOWEVER, the Shield TV 2017 might use the same chip, but all new features disabled at the firmware level. Nvidia never said anything in terms of added performance on that system, and they might be using the same chip to cut cost as these custom Tegra chips is now being mass produced at such large scale. And if it did have all the same features not disabled, why would both Nintendo and Nvidia push "custom", why not simply "Tegra X1 rev 2", or "Tegra X2" (X1 with just a die shrink) or "last gen Tegra" or something.

I think it is because it is loosing battle. Even if it did have Pascal inside. Let's be honest here... it would still be sucky specs. I mean the full fancy Pascal Tegra chip is estimated to be close to the XBox One performance. Most likely, it will be a down clocked version due to battery life being already bad, and well, XBox One is slower than the PS4, and now both console are "replaced" by a higher version (XBox One Scorpio later this year, and PS4 Pro is already out). If the specs are higher, then, well, the console will be way too expensive ($700-800). Then it will flop on that front, and for what? XBox One or PS4 performance? Sure, it is a great and all.. for a few months... then you have the same problem again. The only way is that it has a GeForce 1060 and Intel Core i5 inside. which means that the console would be even more expensive... and forget the battery.. it will be a capacitors at this point. Not to mention this hot and heavy system, which will be another complaint, which might kill the system from selling. And this was proven in the past that it will lead to failure, with Atari Lynx and Sega GameGear.

 

Now, we know why we care about specs: Third party support, because this is what we hear from them when they complain... well... some upper executive/manager not devs directly, so things are simplified to just: "not enougth performance". And we as a gamer seek for "the definitive version" Which console has the most exclusive title of interest, and who has the best "definitive" version of these third party games. And that is why Nintendo si not interested in making a standard home console. It can never compete with the Sony and Microsoft cash flow in buying exclusive titles, get time exclusives, and pay devs to develop their game on their console first to be "the definitive version". Not to mention, be able to sale a console at a big loss, something that they have both done in the previous gen. So Nintendo tries something new. With the Switch, is the fact that the game will definitively not be as visually impressive as the PS4 or XBox One, BUT you can play your game anywhere in your home, TV, bed, couch, table, on the bus, train, plane, in the car (assuming you are not the one driving), at school, etc. And you have this ready to go, easy to setup, no extra equipment needed LAN setup you get from multiplayer game. Would you trade graphics for these abilities? If you want my opinion: Sure! Why not? Because, I would have the exact same problem with the PS4 or XBox One against my PC. In most cases, the PC would have the "definitive version" in: controls (and remember, we can plug an XBox controller on the PC), best frame rate, best visuals, best mod support, best sound, and more. But my PC can't do what the Switch can. I mean I could bring a car battery, and my desktop on the bus.. but... yea.. it won't be particularly practical, to be honest.
