7700K Overclocked to 7Ghz (On Ln2)

The overclocking was done by a Russian website called OClab who managed to get their hands on a 7700K

Using liquid nitrogen cooling, they placed the Kaby Lake chip in a Z170 motherboard and started ramping up the speed. When they were done, the chip was running steady at 7022.96MHz, so 7GHz!

And apparantly it could be possible to get even higher than the 7Ghz if it was placed into a Z270 board.

There's still some headroom left to increase the overclock speed. I mentioned the Z170 motherboard above as it's an older board. Kaby Lake is getting its own line of motherboards built specifically to support it, meaning there's potential to go quicker still once they are available.

That was done with only 2 cores active, which is surprising as normally they turn it down to 1 core to get high overclocks like that.

 

Obviously not all of us can afford to have liquid nitrogen cooling, but for those who have high end water coolers and custom loops, this could be promising and mean that some good overclocks (maybe 5+ ghz?) could be on the way.

While you won't hit 7GHz, over 5GHz should be easily achievable, and with some tweaks I'm guessing 6GHz could be attainable without turning off any of the cores.

Skylake hit 7025 MHz in a similar attempt here: http://www.pcgamer.com/the-world-record-skylake-overclock-is-an-insane-7ghz/

And 5 GHz is practically unheard of on Skylake, let alone 6 GHz.

 

Edit: It's been done with Ivy Bridge and Haswell, too.

yeah, but 2 VOLT, I know crazy vcores are a thing on LN2, that's just a very impressive number.

Yeah I left that bit out cause its going to be nearly impossible to hit 6ghz without LN2

Not practical and I hope the only thing Intel improved wasn't core clocks.

Doesn't seem much I Oced my 7700k to 10ghz although it seems to go aflame so I need to keep my fire extinguisher near me although it does run minecraft at a solid 30 fps so I am happy with it because us humans cant see above 30 fps am I right or am I right?

Feels like a "cool story bro" moment.

 

Im willing to bet there are no people on LTT that use LN cooling, much less using it for anything productive. It doesn't even prove anything like "what the best case is for overclocking on X chip" because they have very little basis in reality.

 

Give me "real world" overclocking info, I want to see an average chip hitting 5ghz on water with all cores on and then i will be interested.
