LTT Folding Team's Emergency Response to Covid-19

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

This event has ended and I recommend you guys head over to the Folding Community Board for any general folding conversation.

Hy, I have a problem: my CPU is getting tasks from F@H but my GPU isn't. I'm running a GeForce MX250. Does anyone knows the solution?

so looking at the est PPD looks like dropping my 2 xps systems processors from folding increaded PPD by approx 100k on the xps laptop its due to gpu not being thermal throttled and on the xps desktop its appears its due to either power restrictions or more likely the i7-6700k and the 2x16gb sticks where too bottle-necked and caused vcard to run at ~74-80% where it now runs around 84-88% and cpu is at 10-12% it appears.

It's advanced not beta, don't use that.

I used to do advanced (now usually neither) but why dont use beta? isnt it just basic > advanced > beta in terms of stability?

Seeing as how I have a very invested interest in Covid-19 I think I need to get a bit more skin in the game. I've already put a second GUP in my current system and I've set a budget of around £1,000 to build a system to fold 24/7. I'm trying to keep costs to put most into GPU power so far I'm at around £400 -

Ryzen 7 2700
Asus ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING ATX
Corsair Vengeance LPX 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4-2400
EVGA BQ 750 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply

So the question is what would give me the best bang for the bucks to crunch the most WU's ? The cost works out about the same for -

1 x MSI GeForce RTX 2080 8 GB VENTUS OC
or
2 x EVGA GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB KO ULTRA GAMING

Or something else I've not thought about that stays in the buget of round £600 for GPU

Also need a cheap case with good airflow any ideas ?

any 'ol case with one or multiple sidepanels removed
Im serious. better too much than too little airflow (consider dust and danger of things bonking against it though)

Id recommend a Ryzen 5 3600 since youre not gonna be mining too much with the cpu anyways and youd get the benefits of the newer architecture making it potentially more usable after all this is over (where you might not let it fold 24/7)

Doing some very crude calculations to compare the two options: BoostClock * CudaCores * NumCards
2080 gets a score of 1800 * 2944 * 1 = ~5.3m
2x2060 get 1755 * 1920 * 2 = ~6.7m
The 2060 should get more WUs done per day but the 2080 will probably still get more PPD because of how turn-around time plays into the points you get per project
Also adjusting for (rated) power draw (225W and 2x160W respectively) by dividing the previous scores:
2080 gets 23552
2x2060 gets 21060
So the single 2080 will probably do more work for the same amount of power

Personally id choose the 2080 just because, again, you could use this thing as a pretty sweet gaming rig when youre not folding

Edit: Worded things better

Well...  I have a 7970 Dual-X and a Vega 56 AirBoost.  I'm running both as folding units, but no reason I need to be.  Hell, I'm not even registered for this competition.  Would one be useful for you?  I need one for 4k output to my TV, but you're welcome to one.

I appreciate the offer but I don't have room for anything that large at the moment and was going to purchase something more efficient. I'm sure someone else here can put it to better use.

If your Vega56 has Samsung memory you should absolutely get a better cooler for it and run overdriventool to overclock the card. With an appropriate cooler the V56 core usually has no problem doing 1550-1570mhz at 1125-1150mv and Samsung memory will run 900mhz if it's kept cool.

Dual 2060 is by far more cost efficient and produces higher scores. Use my cost efficiency calculator for RTX cards:

That's ok it can take a while to start folding.

There are just more CPU WU's out there and still not that many GPU WU's (compared to the amount of people folding out there).

Be patient and you might get a WU. If you have been waiting for a significant time (1-2 hours of idle on your GPU) you can attempt this:

1. Pause the GPU slot (right click the GPU > Pause)

2. Wait 30-40 second

3. Start the GPU slot (right click the GPU > Fold)

This will sometimes allow you to get a WU, but not always guaranteed.

Right click the gpu slot, pause and unpause it. Do that every once in a while if its stuck idle for a long period. Keep in mind there isnt enough work for everyone these days, so its normal if a slot sits idle like this for a while.

Very neat excel file... what do you mean by ns? < .>

Thank you! Being bored in quarantine produces those haha. It's "nanoseconds per day", a more accurate performance measurement used by FAH Benchmark tool (https://fahbench.github.io/). PPD varies wildly because it is calculated differently based on how  "important" the current WU is. ns per day is much more comparable across different hardware.

oh so you actually ment nanoseconds... was so focused on the gamification of it all that i didnt consider the fact it was actually simulating molecules  <  . >

I was wondering where you folks came from.

One positive - the Folding infrastructure group seem to have finally figured out how to ramp up their production of work units to work on BIG TIME over the last few days.

Are you planning to continue pushing on Folding after your Covid event passes?

For reference, I'm a fairly long time fairly big hitter from Team Curecoin - won't be joining y'all for this situation, but under the circumstances I can certainly consider your impressive response a major positive to the project as a whole. Says a lot you've managed to pass up ANONYMOUS and the DEFAULT team.

If any of you have questions especially on multi-card and mixed GPU type rigs under LINUX, I can probably help you sort them out.

I know my current power draw and heat output is unsustainable, but I'll probably keep one machine running from now on.

R5 3600, 5700 XT, AX370 K7...  and that's plenty for me.  If you ignore the masses of other parts I occasionally put together and laugh about.

Exactly. For me the actual scientific output matters so I chose a useful, reproducable measure. From what I heard what the researchers need is in the 100 ms range so to simulate that time a single system would need couple years. Generally higher ns per day = higher PPD.
