Web .com closes Yarmouth NS office, and half of other staff, offshores to Philippines

Web.com group, Inc, of Jacksonville FL, is closing it's office in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. They are sending those jobs to the Philippines, as well as the jobs of nearly 90 people in Hazleton, PA. This takes a large amount of the support staff, and gives it to overseas agents.

The parent company: web.com owns register.com as well.  They're one of the many domain name registrars out there.  I happen to use them for all of my domains.

yarmouth nova scotia is not really a place for a ton of potential good jobs, but head westward and lots of opportunity

You got that right. Every time I see a company move their customer service overseas, even to an English speaking country, it plummets in quality.

Not surprising. By the sounds of the letter, they're downsizing and getting rid of unnecessary staff. As any smart business would do. There's no reason to hold on to redundant employees. People need to realize we're now in a global marketplace, and yes, jobs will go where they're cheaper. Web.com has 3,500 employees. This was a drop in the bucket.

Just by going overseas doesn't mean the quality is necessarily downgraded. I've always received excellent service from overseas call centers. It mostly comes down to training.

I've worked with several geographies from europe asia and south america, there's certain ones that I much prefer to work with because they do better work with less attitude and others are more problematic for cultural reasons.

You'e been lucky. I've found quality of service almost always plummets when their customer service or tech help is moved offshore.

And how much the company is willing to pay for the call centre.  It doesn't matter that it's overseas, what matters is they can pay people less in those countries.  A good quality call centre in India is still good, but a cheap one is painful.

Hard disagree. I moved to Edmonton Alberta (from Halifax NS) several years ago. It’s not a very nice place to live. I was struggling to find regular work as a Land Surveyor (working in the oil field). I had 2 pretty awful years barely making ends meet as an Assistant. I should have been promoted a year ago, but all the land surveying companies were downsizing to nothing. The work was hard and I was constantly insulted and treated like scum. Then I moved to Paris. Lots of work there. I got a job in a week. I am no longer treated like trash, the food is better and working in mild weather is a real treat.  And it’s actually a nice city with lots to do. 
 

tl;dr Don’t go west. Move to Paris instead (if you work in construction).

True, with the economy the way it is is famine time, not feast time.

Not many people have passports, let alone the cash to even fly to Paris though working anywhere in the EU is always a thumbs up, especially in UK, France, Germany but I dunno about the other countries. I keep hearing Spain is a cheap place to live, I been there to and I liked it though the mediteranean sea is a sewer

@amdorintel I am a French and Canadian citizen. I was basically vacationing in Paris to visit my parents in May and then didn’t take my return flight back to Canada. There was no work for me in Canada. And Edmonton is kinda awful... No reason to go back. 

Paris is overhauling its transportation system. There’s a huge shortage of workers. And there’s plenty of work for at least 10 years. Especially since French people lift their noses at construction jobs. They don’t wanna get dirty and they’re all fighting over white collar jobs (which are so much harder to get). Anyways, if you can speak French you’re basically hired. I basically applied to 10 jobs and got hired within the week. 
 

The thing is, you won’t live a lavish American lifestyle in Paris. But having stable work and living well is better than having no work and living broke inside of a cockroach/mouse infested apartment eating spaghetti in a shady neighborhood. Yeah, I don’t miss Edmonton.
