AMD hype train?

Guest
Message added by WkdPaul

The question of hype is legitimate and people have the right to question it, lets try to keep the thread on-track and avoid fanboy and troll accusations and personal attacks as they are against the Community Standards.

I dont get all the hype that's going on with AMD,i understand that people are happy about more cores and more threads, but i feel that that this is basically no man sky all over again and people was hyping it up so much that when new ryzen is launched its going to disappoint a lot of people.(Considering that games are finally leveraging more cores) Idk its probably because im an idiot but, whats your opinion?

Zen 2 is a lot more than just "more cores", AMD for the first time since 2003 is the bleeding edge of CPUs and has left Intel behind, they will offer a superior product for a lower price point than the only competitor on this market, if this is not enough to make people who enjoy this market excited then I don't know what will.

While it was over-hyped with regards to clock speeds, the IPC gains should more than make up for that with Zen 2 products. So shouldn't disappoint anyone IMO.

If this was written about a week ago, I might have agreed in part. But we have most of the details of the CPUs now. We know the cores, the clocks, the list pricing. There's some minor gaps like mobo pricing but I don't expect anything really surprising from now to launch.

That's not to say there isn't hype either, but what there is now should be sufficiently realistic. We should still avoid the excessive fanboyism, that x will destroy y or whatever. The difference in either direction are what they are, and aren't that massive in most cases. Just the internet exaggerating every little difference as normal.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut

Well, obviously, if people are expecting unrealistic results of literally anything then they'll end up disappointed. Alas, if that's the point you were trying to make, then your own question is pointless -- "people who are expecting more than they're getting will be disappointed, news at 11!"

For the rest of us, tho: AMD's new Zen2 - lineup is fricking' excellent and totally not a disappointment.

While I await my own testing, this to me is the biggest moment since they released the X6. I was still rocking core 2 quads around then, a single x6 would do what took more than two quads to do. While the performance difference wont be the main thing time around, it'll be more along the pricing lines.

This is a non-answer.  The AMD processors just announced as compared to Intel's offerings... that's what you need to use analytical and critical thinking to compare and then extrapolate that into potential future offerings...

Not that $330 is expensive or not.

The justified hype(IMO) is because of the HUGE improvements over Zen+. Much higher clocks, significant IPC gain, significant TDP loss and more cores. There are also the people who pretty much expected 16 cores at 5GHz and 12 cores at 5.1GHz or whatever AdoredTV leaked, which was super unrealistic.

There is no hype. Only hype is the fact Ryzen 3000 series is super promising because we know Zen and Zen+ were superb products and they weren't load of BS wrapped into nice package. They were really good products. Zen 2 upgrades IPC, clocks and core counts. Wrapped into sweet 7nm goodness. People are so hyped because we know it's a great product.

There were some doubts about first generation of Ryzen and it did have some issues with RAM and the overclocking was a bit of a let down, but as is was a really good product regardless. Zen+, second gen resolved basically all of it.

Also, we're hyped because AMD is finally doing its magic. Now we're just hoping Navi will also work well for them. If they manage to get that up to speed to it'll be awesome in the PC market with proper competition.

I am getting the feeling that the OP doesn't grasp what IPC-gains mean or what the hugely lower TDP entails, though. For those of us who understand what those mean, things are looking really, really good, but for the less knowledgeable...well, they'll probably just stare at the clocks and nothing else.

It's possible it was speculated based on performance leaks or something. Because performance wise, it does perform almost like a 5.0-5.1GHz Intel at only 4.6GHz, so...

It's either you drop $329 for an 8C/16T 3700X or drop $399 for a 9700k that is beaten by said CPU. Or drop $399 for a 3800X which should trade blows with a $500 9900k. Or drop $499 for a 3900X which beats a $1200 7920x.

There is also a $199 3600 and a $249 3600X.

I'm incredibly excited, as I've felt my ol' i5 6500 struggle to keep up in some tasks I've just started (dabbling in video editing now in my free time off work). I went ahead and got a used i5 back when I built this computer because at the time, gaming was really the only intensive thing I did. Now that Zen 2's IPC and clocks make it line up or exceed Intel at much lower prices, I'm really excited to upgrade.

That leak did assume an IPC uplift of 7% though. 7% IPC uplift and 5GHz should give similar results to 15% IPC uplift at 4.6GHz
