Are women the 1% of tech?

LukeLinusFanFic

Hello fellows

Quite a while ago Linus posted on his Twitter a picture showing that 99% of the LTT viewers on a certain video were male.

Now, I don't mind that or anything, but it just seems pretty weird - how many communities are so homogeneous? (Happy accident)

Why do you think that is? Or is that just a coincidence?

I once gave Luke and Linus pizza.

well, movie crews is quite homogeous.

Gaming is still quite male even though its finally open up (it was mostly due to a marketing decision after the gaming market crashed before the 2000s)

idk how the state is in Nerd Culture but that seems to be opening up.

its not super wierd, but at least its getting better

Plot twist: YouTube just assume the viewers are male because they're watching tech videos.

youtube stats dont mean anything. females may be the 1% on that one particular video, but tech in general? not likely

Besides I don't even recall putting what my gender is on my youtube acc... how reliable are those stats?

Probably not very. I know for a fact that there are a lot of women in tech/gaming who e.g. never put their gender in any online-accounts, if they can avoid it, or put "man" in there instead, just in an effort to avoid all the negative bullshit that's even to this day so prevalent in those circles. I'm an ugly and unpleasant cunt, so I've never had to worry about online-stalkers or harassment or such, but I've known people who have unfortunately met all that online-ugliness and been quite torn up by all of it.

Luke has spoken more than two years ago...

As it turns out, there are people who identify as an i7 CPU as their gender. :P

Now before the easily triggered people on both sides starts spewing shit, I think there are indeed more men in the tech industry but as of late, female representation is growing and it's a good thing that women have representation to what was once considered "a man's world". I mean, just look at Dr. Lisa Su of AMD.

But at the same time, I don't think that playing with the gender card just for the sake of representation should be the basis of getting a high position in tech. I'd still prefer to see both men or women get to high positions in tech based on their educational credentials and qualifications.

Every time people start bitching over men domination in certain fields I can't stop to think about all the shitty male dominated jobs and how no one ever bitches about lack of women there. You know, deep earth mining, garbage collection, construction, road works, sewer maintenance, high voltage powerlines maintenance, remote oil rigs, fishing out in freezing cold oceans, logging, all the back breaking hard and nasty shit done pretty much exclusively by men and no one EVER complains over that. Not enough women in cozy air conditioned offices? STOP THE WORLD THIS MOMENT, WE NEED TO ADDRESS THIS DISPARITY RIGHT NOW! It's straight revolting and I can't fucking shut up about it every time someone brings this idiocy up. You'll find pretty much the same reply from me on each and every one of them. And I'll continue doing this until people shut up about it or make sure that women also have equal representation in those jobs. Until they will, shut the hell up with this retarded virtue signaling. I'm all for equality and everything, but this really blows up my kettle...

Women who want to work in tech fields are probably already working there. No one is stopping them and there are many that are incredible electrical engineers, astronauts, racing drivers, programmers or whatever. But they invested their time and hard work to achieve it. They didn't ask anything to be handed over to them just because they are women. They worked just as hard as any man and now they have those titles. Some probably even more because they wanted to prove themselves. Which is no different when men enter women dominated jobs and want to prove they are not only as qualified but more. It often has nothing to do with higher requirements, it has a lot to do with self motivation and determination to prove everyone around that they are better and more capable because of the given gender disparity. But if you start your career as gender studies student and then bitch about gender disparity in tech, then YOU are the problem, not the industries.

another way of thinking: instead of catergorise people in the tech business in gender, how about psychological traits? how many high school athletes in there? less than 1% percent i guess?

gender isnt the story, it's a label.

why everybody post the spec of their rig here? i dont! cuz its made of mashed potatoes!

That's what I'm wondering, mate. If it's a label, why isn't it ~50\50, or anywhere close?

There's correlation between athleticism and tech interest, in some way. But why gender?

Many psychological traits have corrolation with gender. Hense masculinity and femininity.

Because one group has more individuals taking interest than the other.

look, if this was a "make-up tips"  forum , who do you think would consist of 99%? (that's right, ugly people, trying to cover up their horrid faces)  it's simple based off of interest & the nature of the product it sells .

Details separate people.

Seeing how the "the 1%" became a derogatory term used by socialists against the rich I don't think its fair to use it for women in tech. That seems mean.

From my own perspective, as someone who lives and work in the tech capital of the world, its probably more like 5-10%.

Though I have always been of the mind that people should do what they like if they can make a living at it, and that no one should be included or excluded based on gender. So I don't really care for these social engineering attempts going on to push people into jobs they otherwise wouldn't have wanted, so we can have equal percentage of each gender in a given job.

well there are indeed women in "tech", like my wife (senior IT manager, also knows everything about hardware and repairs) that do their job in their field of expertise and then there are feminists who constantly whine and cry about "male privileges" as a way to mask their lack of knowledge and/or willing to do the job

you perform like shit = you get fired, is as fucking simple as that. my wife leads a team of guys because she's capable of doing so, and earns more than them, it's funny that this sole fact is enough to debunk that "sex gap" bullshit propaganda.

Women aren't the 1% of tech because only 1% of a viewerbase for an LTT video were female.

One channel's viewerbase on a certain video isn't really enough to say "yep women are the 1% of tech".

Some people don't add their genders onto youtube, some don't watch that particular channel, some don't watch youtube, etc. The list goes on.

If you go on average figures from across the first world free countries,  there should be a bout 20% females viewing tech stuff and about 80% male.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.
