On windows 10, there is a Network Discovery feature turned on by default that can automatically install printers, assuming you will be satisfied with the universal drivers.

If the network type is domain, guest, or public, you may need to manually toggle it on in the network & sharing center. From there, just hook one of the printers up to ethernet and see if it magically shows up.

Ubiquiti products are very good, their controller is super easy to use.

You'll probably want an unmanaged switch, really anything will do depending on your internet speed.

Dont think so. I think they are just Peer to Peer. You would connected the unit at the shop to a Switch and OR Access Point.

Hello, I'm the OP of that thread. You can find it here, if you're interested. I got some great feedback on wiring my home for Ethernet, switches included.

Well I mean, if it's unmanaged then I don't see much point in recommending one brand over another. They should all be pretty much the same.

There’s another thread that might produce some useful stuff.  It’s about ethernet but phone stuff was discussed.  I’m having trouble finding the thread but that title contained “60 year old house” and one of the posters was @TechTippee

Yes. but be careful with public IPs. they are dangerous if you don't know what you are doing.

    You have been warned.

I love their simplistic SKU's/Model numbers for their Ryzen series. I believe the R7 3800XT may be my octa-core choice to upgrade from my R5 2600X.

Cat5e will do 1000Mbps and has proven to handle 2500Mbps. If your Ethernet cable is damaged cheap Cat5e will do you fine up-to 100m for 1000Mbps.

Naterr reacted to Falcon1986 in Ethernet identifies but there is no connection to the internet
Are you connecting to the internet through a modem or router? Have you tried restarting all of your network equipment? Try pinging Google from the command prompt. What do you get? Do you have any static IP settings assigned to your network adapter? If so, set everything to 'auto'. Are valid internal IPs showing up for your NIC when you run 'ipconfig /all' in the command prompt?

either of what can do it?

Im pretty sure thats a l2 switch so it doesn't have a firewall built in. Id just get a cheap little router like a edge router or a mikrotik device.

Or better yet, run the link to the swithc as a vlan trunk and making a interface on your router for devices that need wan only.

Naterr got a reaction from Falcon1986 in How do i put a second router in my house
You COULD remove the wall plates and inspect the already existing coaxial cable (given that cable is not being used, and is near the existing router) and see if you can potentially tie an ethernet cable on one end and pull the cable through, and you'll have a cable run and no need for adapters.

Then you can purchase one of these bad boys.

Or, you can just run a cable.

"Gaming" in here, as in many other places, is mainly marketing term. It's flashy UI (check LTT video about some Asus router) to give same features pretty much all of same price range would have.

I've had Buffalo and TP-Link routers die on me. Currently with local brand, Telewell. I was thinking about getting Asus or Netgear next. But I look for features and reviews rather than branding.

I bought a Sabrent 2.5" SATA to USB for $9.99 works great for SSD and 2.5" HDD. I've never had an issue with it, but I'm sure there are better built on the market. Hell, get two or three of them just in case.

Naterr reacted to asquirrel in Proprietary GBIC??
@naterr GBIC is standard in and only insofar as the physical dimension. The communication protocol used by each GBIC is up to the relevant driver to understand. Standard OS drivers will work with standard GBICs. Custom drivers will be needed with custom GBICs. "How do I know?" You have to plug it in and see if it works. "What can I do if it doesn't?" You have two options:
Write your own driver Use a different GBIC It sucks, but this is how most companies make money with GBIC hardware. They sell the switch cheap, and shaft you on the GBICs. This is 100% normal industry practice. I said normal, not ethical.

Naterr reacted to dizmo in Official Ryzen 5, 7 and 9 XT variants specs released to the public and release date
....meh. Huge meh. It's a whopping 100mhz over their non-XT brethren. I mean, if they're the same price then performance gains are always nice to be had, but if they've increased the price at all I fail to see how this would be anywhere near worth purchasing.

It's also highly unlikely you'll get any better overclocking from these. They're likely just binned chips.

A mere 100mhz boost won't be a huge difference. You could just look at OC results for the 3800x and see what the performance figures will be.
I'd just wait for the 4000 series, provided the rumors of them holding off until next year aren't true.
That, or grab a 3800x at a lower price and overclock it.

You literally opened an entire world of issues. MOST likely this is a server issue, whereas they limit the speeds to download.
Go to speedtest.net and run a test to see what your download speed is there, don't base it off of game server.

Naterr reacted to Windows7ge in Is powerline conection decent?
Powerline is a very hit-or-miss solution that relies heavily on your home wiring. It can work well or be worse than Wi-Fi.

Circumstantially Wi-Fi could be faster/more reliable. You'll just have to try it and see if it works for you.

Would very much rule out that coupler. That one in particular. Those are usually not that bad, but you've got something going on with the line.
    I would:
    1. Test each cable with the same PC, and see if they both produce same speeds. You shouldn't see a major difference between them. Not 100+ meg difference like you did before.
    2. I'd then test the coupler with a new pair of cables.
Compare the two, and make your decision off of that.

Perfect world, you can run cat6 cables for up to 100m (~320ft). I would remove the coupler if, at all, possible.

Naterr reacted to NelizMastr in High ping when i bought a better ethernet cable
Why did you upgrade the cable? It won't give you faster performance or lower ping when the rest of the network isn't upgraded to the same standard.

Also, CAT8 isn't available yet in UTP cables, just S/FTP cables, which aren't always compatible with eachother, I've found. They serve different use cases.
