Any overclock is a gamble. You can have two identical systems (not even different generations like you do) and the same stick of memory will work fine on one, but not the other. No two IMC have the exact same characteristics. This is exactly the same as overclocking CPU frequency.

It is possible that you just need a bit more voltage to the IMC, which would be System Agent voltage in most bios I have worked with. But it could also mean that your old overclocked settings are just not correct for the new platform.

Yes, that is entirely possible. It’s also possible the RAM isn’t and wasn’t actually stable at those speeds without tweaking voltages or latencies.

RAM OCing is the most difficult form of OCing, it’s hard to get stable, and it’s even more difficult to test…

I am not trying to discourage you from trying it, but make sure you properly and fully test for stability; normal CPU stability tests are not at all good enough.

Fully read and understand this GitHub page, and use the tools they recommend the validate.

But, the short version is yes, RAM can behave differently in different platforms. My RAM was rock solid at 3600 on my 9900k system, I had to drop it down to 3500 on my 10700k system, all other settings being identical. It seemed stable under all standard tests, but after 8+ hours of Google’s RAM burn in test which runs on linux, I started to see an error or two crop up.

The site seems to be Irish even though the company is from Netherlands, so I think there would be no taxes, only the included VAT. Not sure on how good the shop is though.

If you're looking to buy a 30-series card then you'll definitely need a complete system overhaul. I'm not entirely sure how two of these xeons will hold up but they will most likely bottleneck you pretty hard if you go with anything better than a 3060. Swapping the CPU will also force you to get DDR4 ram (you currently have DDR3), new motherboard and an SSD or two (unless you like to torture yourself with 4 hard-drives). What I would do is just sell the whole PC or take it apart and sell the parts separately (depending which can get you the most money) and start from the beginning with a new platform.

170 euro is about an average price for the 1070 right now (maybe 10-15 below the proper average) but if I was you I would go on ebay and look for auctions, whenever I wanted an older used card there were always better deals to be had when bidding (make sure you look up any other fees/import charges that might get added on). At an auction you might get a better version of the 1070 like the evga sc or smaller double fan asus ones. The blower style is never a good option

This is what I do and it works well enough for me:

    Low latency mode: Ultra
    G-sync: on
    Power Management: Performance
    Vsync: Fast
    Tripple buffering: off
Framerate cap: 160fps (165Hz monitor, you should use 140fps for 144Hz)

Jakub_NF got a reaction from Warin in Should I sell or upgrade?
If you need more performance overall then you could upgrade the cpu but the 8400 is basically the 8600k without overclocking and that is still an excellent gaming chip. If I was you I would just buy and extra stick of ram to make it 16gb (unless your setup is 2x4 right now) and whatever gpu you want, your current setup won't have problems with bottlenecks.

There will be no bottlenecking in sight with this config, but for productivity I would not go AMD GPU as the driver issues will probably cause you to lose your progress at one point or another, I would go with something like 2070 super instead. May be a bit worse with pure performance but the extra features and stability is certainly worth it.

Jakub_NF reacted to porina in 980 Ti + 1070 in SLI?
There was a software hack that allows two dissimilar or unsupported nvidia GPUs to run SLI, but from what I saw at the time it was a world of pain to set up (disable driver signing in Windows and other steps). Just save your time and sanity and stick to a single card, or get a faster one if you really need it.

You mention Gsync and Freesync side by side here, but it's important to note they're different. Gsync would work with 900 series cards already, so if you have a Gsync monitor, you wouldn't need to add a 1070 to make it work. Freesync on the other hand would require a 10 series card.

Jakub_NF reacted to Princess Luna in 980 Ti + 1070 in SLI?
You can not since SLI is only supported to matching GPUs, thereafter you need either another 980 Ti or another 1070.

Either ways SLI is a dying technology you shouldn't bother with nowadays.

Corsair RM650x is a tier 1 PSU with the straight power 11 and seasonic prime not far behind it, in my opinion it doesn't really get much better than the corsair RMx series, I had 2 different ones so far and had no problems whatsoever apart from having to upgrade the RM550x to RM750x White due to my system needing more power (and extra points in cosmetics ofc)

Sticker on BIOS chip says 38L3687
Googling that gave me : IBM FRU 89P8010 P/N 38L3687  - fru is something "replacement unit" I think ... basically IBM's internal code for parts.
Googling 89P8010 gives a reference to IBM NetVista 6648

So it's a Socket 370 motherboard, pentium 3 133 mhz, sdram (up to 256 MB)

The brown slot is AGP 2x if you're too young to remember ... ( and you probably need very old agp 2x cards, the last agp 8x probably won't work in these slots)
The first white slot is a non-standard PCI slot  ... my guess is the added extension is there so that you can plug a riser board with several PCI slots.
The edge connector... my guess is that it's just PCI pins ... so they can extend the board with more PCI slots.
You can have up to 7 PCI slots in a system, if I remember correctly. So, like extending mATX to ATX standard size, maybe they had a circuit board with a PCI socket on the edge and then multiple standard PCI slots.

my guess is either expansion of sorts (additional ports), or its an interface used at the factory for testing, bios fashing, etc. its not unlikely for them to take a port type they have available already, because it saves part count, and as a result BOM cost.

Without a bezel on a LCD you would see the edge of the LCD panel which is like a metal frame which is kinda ugly. Without that metal frame you would get massive light bleed from the backlight.

Displays that dont have bezels, like the costly OLED glass TV's, dont have bezels because the OLED is effectively printed onto the chosen substrate, the pixels simply end, no need for a backlight or to hide anything.

Jakub_NF reacted to toobladink in Full Bezel-Less Monitor
My guess is that we're able to do it with phones because of OLED panels, and as you know, almost every phone nowadays has an OLED and thin bezels. There are a handful that are still IPS or have a backlight, and those are thicker. But really, there aren't too many people looking for ultra thin bezels. I haven't seen or heard of anyone using triple monitors for gaming in a long time, which is really one of the few use cases where I think it's needed. But again, some people think that's overkill and just get the 32:9 ultrawides instead, which are becoming increasingly more common.

And the thing about curved displays - they're made so that at a certain point, every pixel is the same distance apart. If you have a display that's three feet long, that's going to be quiet a thick monitor. Like if you mounted that to the wall, and the curve was designed so that every pixel is the same distance away at three feet away, you'd probably have like ten centimeters of space between the wall and the edge of the display
