Nintendo saying goodbye to casuals

Looks like Nintendo finally got the hint that casual gamers, the types who think Flappy Bird is a brilliant game, are not the audience they should cater to anymore. Back when the Wii first launched, it sold like mad and the fad of casual games was at a high. It was down right impossible to get a Wii around the holiday seasons and soon kids and old folks alike were playing Wii sports. Fast forward to some years later and the Wii-U is doing so bad. Bad enough where Microsoft's Xbone PR wasn't so horrible. I believe it's because the casuals moved on from Wii hype and onto tapping their phones on public transit or wherever.

 

 

"[These are] the sort of people who, for example, might want to watch a movie. They might want to go to Disneyland," he said.

"Their attitude is, 'okay, I am the customer. You are supposed to entertain me.' It's kind of a passive attitude they're taking, and to me it's kind of a pathetic thing. They do not know how interesting it is if you move one step further and try to challenge yourself [with more advanced games]."

It doesn't matter who they pander to now, Nintendo has faded into irrelevance to everyone but Nintendo enthusiasts. They could have Call of Duty, Halo, Uncharted, Forza, And every other big name on their system along with Hardware that would make PC Gamers cream their pants and it wouldn't matter. Nintendo has lost too much face. And I'm saying this as someone who has no interest in any current gen console other than the Wii U.

Currently, both the Xbox One and the PS4 are very much like a budget PC in terms of the games they offer. Nintendo caters to local play unbelievably well, and offer interesting games.

As long as Nintendo continues to push unique and innovative titles, as well as perhaps a price drop, the Wii U makes a great additional system; i.e. to be bought in addition to something like an Xbox, PS, or PC. Contrast that to the silliness of buying a PS4 and an XBone when both operate nearly identically.

IT was largely overshadowed by the Playstation.

 

I'll admit it had a lot of well known titles, and controller aside is an awesome system worth owning, but it's the start of Nintendo's downfall in the console market. 

 

It's when a lot of third parties jumped ship due to the limitations of cartridges at the time.

It was seeing those two things so close that amused me, it was not a personal attack.

 

As for the other stuff, it honestly depends on the types of games someone is into. Most of the games for mainstream modern console games are for PC anyway so it's not like there is much unique factor. This is where Nintendo comes in as their IPs simply don't exist for PC outside of emulation. You're not gonna find a Zelda title or Pokemon one off Steam any time soon. The childishness of those games are irrelevant if the person just likes those franchises. Like how someone can remain loyal to Xbox based off Halo alone. The Wii-U is just now starting to get games that'd sell the system.

 

Not saying Nintendo is flawless, the company isn't. However, this is the perfect opportunity to get on track to build up their brand and shake past stigma. I'm being straight up. The games I play, I can get those same games on PC. If I had to choose any combination of platforms of games, I really wouldn't need anything beyond a gaming rig and a Nintendo console. There are a fair amount of gamers who feel the same way that the majority of modern consoles don't offer much in terms of uniqueness. This is how consoles sale, not the hardware but the games pushing hardware sales. To scoff Nintendo is pretty ignorant considering the same was done for the 3DS when it launched due to lack of games. Now that there are games, the 3DS is popular. The Wii-U has upcoming titles that are system sellers now. It's only going to get better.

I fail. 

Finally, Miyamoto gets it. See,

this is the period in gaming history

I would like to call "Bandwagon

days", because this is what is

repeatedly displayed in the industry.

First it was MMOs (WoW's success

caused hundreds of other crappy

MMOs to show up for a piece of the

pie), then FPS games (CoD did the

same thing for FPS'), then it was

MOBAs (LoL anyone?), and then the

casual audience in general thanks to 

their sheer numbers. 

The problem with doing that by game

genre is you aren't going to be

significant if you aren't first. The

problem with doing it by audience

depends on the audience. 

Casuals aren't going to stay. Nintendo

saw that with the Wii-U. Most people

who bought the Wii didn't upgrade,

and that's precisely why they are

casuals. Pandering to them will only

get you short term profits and if you try

to make them long term, you are going

to be burned (like Nintendo was/is). 

This is a reason I hate it when games

start trying to be more "accessible". I

have nothing against casual gamers

except that they cause the games I play

to be dumbed down because although

they won't spend a lot on games, there

are enough of them to be significant

enough for developers/publishers to

notice and want their money. 

It's like, when a game is made, the

developers have this natural desire

to get as big of an audience as possible,

and the biggest audience is casuals,

because they want money. That's

understandable. I just think nobody

understands where that becomes

self-destructive (as Nintendo has shown)

and you are burning long term profits

(since casuals will never stay and other

gamers will leave once the game is

made for casuals) for short term profits. 

So, developers build games for casuals

and publishers publish games for

casuals and they make a lot of money.

Then the casuals move on next

generation (either for the console or the

game itself) to other things (like Flappy

Birds), but the developers/publishers

don't realize that, so they make more

casual games and these games flop.

Or, in Nintendo's case, consoles. 

This is why I don't like casual gamers.

Because the industry hasn't learned

how to deal with them yet in a

constructive, positive for the industry,

manner. And you'd think they would

figure it out faster than an entire

console generation. But whatever. I'm

just a hardcore gamer who wants

hardcore games.

 

Screw me for being loyal, right?

It's almost like every company in the

world is trying to get people to pay

money for things they don't need or

even want, but think they want (because

of the companies shenanigans) for as

long as possible before they ultimately

realize the stupidity of it and leave. 

I mean, yeah, I get it. Companies want

money. People have money. But all this

bull crap monopolies (ISPs), contracts

(pretty much everyone), and unnecessary

services (PS+ for example) is a bit

much imo.
