HOW is THIS for Gamers??

(I accidentally an early premiere, so uh, hey guys)

Is your Coffee Lake getting cold? Good news! Intel’s refreshing it. Are you ready for 8 cores and a new, even more confusing naming scheme?

You can overclock without delidding.

You only need to delid if you're trying to push 5.3GHz or stuff like that.

You don't HAVE to do that either.

That's only if you want to get the maximum temperature improvement.

You can still get a very significant temperature reduction by simply delidding and using liquid metal.

Did you even watch the video or are you trying to find every possible reason to hate on the CPU?

So you think that "overclockers" means everyone overclocking is trying to get a world record running liquid nitrogen?

Well, actually no, most "overclockers" are normal people who overclock their CPU by a few hundred MHz with a good air or liquid cooler in order to get a bit more performance out of it.

Almost all of these people have never delidded a CPU before.

Delidding and lapping is something only very few people do in order to try breaking world records.

Maybe the word you're looking for is "extreme overclockers" or "competitive overclockers", which is like 0.00001% of people who overclock.

1 detail i miss in this review is that the 9900k doesn't have a cooler while the 2700x does.

Might not be a big deal but this only widens the price gap. I mean if you need a somewhat decent aircooler for the 9900k that easily costs 30-40 bucks, it's an important detail to keep in mind.

Another 'generation' and i use that term loosly here, and yet another reason not to upgrade from my trusty 3930k.

I mean seriosly, for gaming , an i7 sandybridge with a good OC .. maybe 4.8-5ghz, or 4.6-4.8ghz for a 6c/12t chip, is more than capable even now.

When i do finaly build my 24/7 liquid subzero rig, i currently see no reaosn why i shouldnt just use my current setup and upgrade the GPU to an SLi setup. There is nothing enticing about upgrading the CPU currently....7 friggn 'generations' of CPU have released .. u'd think it would be worth it by now.

Makes me wonder why Intel doesn't just clock the chip higher by default if the power consumption and heat is so low.

9900k is a monster chip. It's expensive because there is more silicon. We asked for 16 thread and we got it. You pays your money and takes your choice.

I have one - the thermals are not nearly as bad as the reviewers have said. Mine is at 5Ghz in the low 60's under 100% non AVX load. (with very little tuning)

Nice rundown, but I think the price difference percentages were given in a slightly misleading way (although everyone can do the math themselves). When you say the i9 is "40% more expensive" than the 2700x what you actually mean is that the 2700x is 40% cheaper. The i9 is closer to being 60% more expensive than the 2700x because, when you frame it that way, the price of the 2700x should be taken as reference. That's a minor complaint though.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

I laughed at his facial expression LOL

If I was new, I wouldnt take Linus or any of his video's seriously.

Knowing Intel, I am sure it will be a good cpu for gamers, if the reviews say no its not better then another cpu for gaming, then just buy that cpu then.

Depends how you feel about deliding.

With the 9900K you probably wont have to.

It would be interesting to see the SIL Quality of the LTT 9900K.

I really enjoy Linus’s take on CPU reviews.   Many reviews tend to just note the spec sheets then maybe a hint of opinion thrown in. Linus not only shows the specs but he truely shows the real world tests. GamersNexus also does a great job of this. The reviews are thorough and well made. As for the 9900k specifically I have mixed feelings. The raw performance is unmatched for any 8 core processor and no one denies that. Price/Performance ratio has never been on intel’s mind and I think they’re fine with it. Having ‘the best’ CPU really brings attention and more importantly sales. AMD is still the master of budget options and likely will be for the foreseeable future. Intel and AMD seem to have found their corners and probably won’t test their boundaries until Zen 2. Even then, who knows.

Short Answer: No

Long Answer: The benefit, much like the previous several years are minimal. It’ll be a few years until games become more multithreaded. If you still have a 6700k or even a Haswell based cpu, upgrading won’t do a huge improvement. Especially a $600 improvement.

I feel like both; the name of this video and its content TOTALLY miss the expected mark.
I was expecting something in the neighborhood of "if you are a gamer, there is no need to have more then i5 now. ESPECIALLY now with >$9000 price tag.
... and if you are an entrepreneur, 2700x is a clear choice."
