Intel Announces Xeon W-3175X: 28-Core Processor for Extreme Workstations

Details are finally starting to come out about the 28 core CPU Intel initially showed at Computex.

Intel on Monday officially introduced its 28-core processor for extreme workstations that it teased first back in June. The new chip comes with unlocked multiplier and can run at up to 4.3 GHz in burst mode.

 

The Intel Xeon W-3175X CPU is based on the Skylake/Cascade Lake microarchitecture and is compatible with motherboards featuring Intel’s LGA3647 server-based socket. The CPUs runs at 3.1 GHz stock, but can increase its frequency to 4.3 GHz, it features a six-channel DDR4 memory controller that supports up to 512 GB and a massive 38.5 MB cache. Since the chip uses a new socket, it is naturally not compatible with any motherboards available on the market. Meanwhile, to date, only ASUS and GIGABYTE have confirmed plans to offer mainboards for Intel’s Xeon W-3175X.

Socket being used is the current socket for the high end Xeon products and is based on the same architecture as those Xeons. Clocks are significantly higher than the Xeon server parts which are 2.50Ghz/3.80Ghz, not unexpected for a workstation focused Xeon which for those that don't know is not a new thing, Intel has workstation focused Xeons in all previous generations. The current Xeon W product line use LGA2066 so this new product isn't part of the same hardware platform even though it's in the same product range, keep that in mind for those looking to buy.

The new 28-core processor has a massive TDP of 265 W and considering the fact that it comes with an unlocked multiplier and can be overclocked, that power draw may get even higher. That said, the Xeon W-3175X will require a very robust cooling system, preferably a liquid-based one. At least, Intel itself demonstrated the chip with a cooler featuring two fans and a 240-mm radiator.

Also not unexpected this has a very large TDP, Xeon W-2195 is 140W and i9-7980XE is 165W for reference and both are 18 core CPUs. Per core the TDP between the current 18 core CPUs and this new 28 core CPU is roughly the same for those that are interested, slightly over 9W per core.

To compliment this the ROG Dominus Extreme features not just one, but two 24-pin ATX power connectors along with four 8-pin and two 6-pin 12 V ATX power connectors to provide enough power. The ROG Dominus Extreme is based on the EEB ATX form factor and has a total of twelve DDR4 slots which should support for up to a maximum of 192 GB of system memory.

EEB form factor is very large so don't expect many newer cases to support this motherboard as this size has not been a requirement for a long time and most manufacturers have dropped support for it in favor of smaller cases since that's what the market wants.

Quite a niche product, but possibly the ultimate single socket solution where power and price are no limit. AMD may offer a higher core count, but this should balance against it with clock and far stronger FP64 performance.

 

I'd rather Intel bought back 2 socket systems into high end overclocking systems, like the good old days. That would be really fun.

Well this is only the W-3175X so maybe the W-3195X will allow it, for more $$$ obviously

I'd laugh if I slapped them on the board and they worked. I would tell absolutely noone though. Last thing I'd want is an update preventing a multiprocessor configuration.

Interesting that this has 6 channels of memory, it’ll definitely be better then the 2990WX is memory intensive workloads, aside from that I expect the two to be pretty comparable.

The architecture in use is 6 channels that's why it has it, same die as the 8180/8176 with different microcode. Honestly it would be better to compare this to the EPYC single socket optimized models, that end with a P, but those are locked and are power efficiency optimized so will be nowhere near this kind of performance.

 

Steve and Jay need to get these pronto and get back in to the SLI 2080 Ti competition. Round 4, FIGHT!

Here is a better pic of that board. It needs more than just dual 24 pins. Back has dual lan 10gbe and 1gbe, along with wifi ac. The shroud has a oled panel, that display vital stats like cpu clock speed.

Its a E-ATX that needs 2 24 pin and 4 8 pin + 2 6 pin for the CPU. does it come with a nuclear power plant?

It's eeb/atx  14"x14".  e-atx is smaller. A case that might work, is the corsair 900d and above.

Witth DDR4 prices, knowing the Intel Premium, the power cost consumption, and the cost of managing 2 24 pin, 4 8 pin, and 2 6 pin to a MOTHERBOARD let alone we haven't even added in GPUs, simply buying a Threadripper would be much cheaper. You could buy 2 and negate everything Intel has done at half the TDP apparently
