Due to a vulnerability in WebKit... it takes only a few lines of CSS code to crash an iPhone or an iPad. The code itself is not too complex and uses multiple nested elements like <div>... inside a CSS effect called backdrop-filter. This is a processor intensive task which takes up a lot of the device’s resources and can be used to make it crash. He warned that any link which contains the code can freeze the phone.  “Anything that renders HTML on iOS is affected, ”Haddouche also added that a tweaked version of CSS code can affect MacOS as well, making more Apple products vulnerable. He said that Apple has acknowledged the bug and is currently looking into it.

A security researcher has found a new way to crash and restart any iPhone — with just a few lines of code. Sabri Haddouche tweeted a proof-of-concept webpage with just 15 lines of code which, if visited, will crash and restart an iPhone or iPad. Those on macOS may also see Safari freeze when opening the link. The code exploits a weakness in iOS’ web rendering engine WebKit, which Apple  mandates all apps and browsers use. “Anything that renders HTML on iOS is affected,” he said. That means anyone sending you a link on Facebook or Twitter, or if any webpage you visit includes the code, or anyone sending you an email, he warned. TechCrunch tested the exploit running on the most recent mobile software iOS 11.4.1, and confirm it crashes and restarts the phone. Malwarebytes confirmed that  the most recent iOS 12 beta also froze when tapping the link. There’s no easy way to prevent the attack from working. One tap on a booby-trapped link sent in a message or opening an HTML email that renders the code can crash the device instantly.

 

My Thoughts:

It wasn't that long ago that I posted about another minor issue causing crashes on Apple Devices. You'd think with forcing themselves to be so locked down they'd have better control and quality testing against issues like this. I give it 6 months before another iOS crash is in the news. Regardless, @DrMacintosh, don't click that link!

Well... at least it's harmless. Why does this always seem to happen in ios though?

It doesn’t. Similar vulnerabilities exist across many devices, they just don’t get media coverage.

Might be confirmation bias but pretty sure its' because the iOS ecosystem is so consistent. If this was android it might only affect the S9 or only Samsung phones instead of the entire android ecosystem.

That sounds a little weird, if there were many problems like this on a given android version you'd hear about it... and there have been a couple.

They are much less in quantity. iOS and macOS have much more like these.

 

I still laugh at apple developers for leaving root account with blank password so that anyone could enter system with root user :D

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Can confirm, the website caused my iPad on iOS12 to respring (Which is not a reboot, as stated in the article however).

This seems to be quite common on WebKit, I feel like every year or so there is some exploit relating to a specific link or something. At least they acknowledged it.

 

I may have missed it, was this only on iOS devices running Safari or any browser you use on iOS?

It was blank! I tested it and i got into root user without password!

For MacOS they use their Tax statement, but its alpine on iOS.

So this is actually a WebKit problem, specifically?

 

As long as they patch it quickly, I see no terrible harm here. Annoying, yes, but the impact should be fairly minimal.

Seems like the specific site had been blocked. I also got a 403 error when trying to visit it on my iPhone and iPad. I wanted to crash my stuff ?
