NVidia is selling different RTX chip packages - Binning evolved

NVidia is allegedly binning the RTX chips for performance and OC potential, before selling them to their Board Partners.

This includes having distinct device IDs for the binning quality, not just the model itself.

 

Please note that both sources linked below are talking about the same thing, from a different angle. But they also contradict each other in some aspects.

  • Techpowerup claims there are two distinct binning qualities and one is not allowed to be factory OCed.
  • HardwareLuxx claims there are three distinct binning qualities, but did not mention the limitation to factory OC.

Board Partner get a different price depending on the quality

According to HardwareLuxx, the partners can order specific packages of chips, which are always bundled with the memory.

There is no information about the differences between brackets and no information on pricing differences either.

Translation: "A GPU-Memory-Package with standard chips is cheaper than one with an especially well OCing chip. The exact limits in terms of clock and volts for the three versions and their pricing are unknown to us."

 

 

There is a catch though:

The lesser Quality chips are not allowed to be factory OCed according to Techpowerup. They will however not be locked out from OCing by the users. Though they will likely be worse at OCing, that is the whole point of the binning process.

My take on this:

At first, it sounds like "yet another thing to bash partners", but I always try to see the positive aspects first.

Silicone lottery may be less of an issue moving forward. Sure it was nice to get a great chip, but it was also greatly annoying when losing the lottery.

 

Partners know in advance what they will be getting. This may lead to reduced binning by partners. Also, they can produce budget variants by getting the cheaper chip stacks.

Think about OEM cards for example, which usually don't get OCed anyways.

Or real budget cards that are simply cheap, with a nice cooler, for people that want to save a few bucks and don't plan on OCing anyways.

 

Due to the identifier as part of the product number, it is also easy for everyone to check which kinda chip they have.

I would personally love to see this getting extended to more than A-Grade and "other". Which is what HardwareLuxx claims to have heard from partners. But that is something we could do as a community as well, using the OC Scanner and making a chart which custom cards fall into which range.

Tbh this is nothing much new, board partners do this all the time anyway (Such as EVGA with their DT/SC/FTW etc). Only difference being the board partners will have to spend less time binning.

The board partners do it though not Nvidia. There is a difference between the two

I think this is an improvement. Look at the ordeal with DT cards. Manufactures didn't have a way of determining chip quality, so they were forced to toss them in a card then if they failed the testing turn them in to DT cards (EVGA).

 

This means the big manufacturers can purchase a given bin of the chip and be pretty confident in what it can do. This means they won't have these lesser quality cards for their high end models.

Nvidia has been doing this as well. There are plenty of people that noticed FE cards being much easier to OC than custom models before.

Now we just have a way to know in advance, and even just look at our chips and SEE what we have. So I kinda see this as a big improvement myself.

Yeah FE cards were know to easily hit 2100mhz even with garbage coolers. That's why people sorta associated the price premium with binning even though it was for the board partners

Overall I'm not against this. This means that the consumer has a better idea of what kind of card theyre getting across all AIB's. I guess the only downside is that the up charge for the binned die's *could* get passed to the consumer more so than they would if AIB's did the tests?

The only concern I would have with this is that they'll probably be charging extra for the good chips, rather than charge less for the 'rubbish' ones

Pure speculation though, unless you have a source for that?

Binning is no huge expense, but board partner did it all the time. Depending on the prices NVidia charges, and the detail board partners get, it may just stay the same. Or even go down. Nvidia binning all the chips is likely cheaper than a "small" partner starting a full binning process for a few hundred cards.

 

Honestly, we really can't tell at all. Way too many unknown variables.

I prefer the gamble but I'm also pretty indifferent to this tbh

I'm not against the idea in principle. But i'm very very much against the apparent secrecy involved. If Nvidia wants to sell 2-3 different kinds of 2070, 2080 and 2080Ti. Their marketing material should explicitly mention this, and properly inform the customer.

 

What is the likely goal of all this is to get 3rd party reviewers to review the Nvidia founders edition. Which is itself allegedly 20% more expensive than the alleged msrp. Then sell cheaper chips, with the implication that getting Founder's edition settings is likely provided the cooler is at least on par with the founder's edition cooler. Looking at the pre-review in the last few days, it seems Nvidia has been pumping the Founder's edition cards full of premium components, with the intent of misleading the customers.

Sounds to me like Nvidia is cashing in on the silicon lottery rather than the board makers. Just moving the profit up the chain another step. How long has it been since consumers have actually gotten to participate in the lottery in a significant way? Buying multiple cards, benching them all and then reselling the ones that didn't OC well? It's been out of our hands an in board maker's for so long that I don't see this affecting me in the least.

See, I'm confused more than anything else with this. It just makes it more complex to tell what you're getting unless board makers sell them as different labelled products even if it's a 2080 or 2080 Ti.

Umm, from what I recall, a chip will react differently once the modules and stuff are changed.

 

unless they are selling the whole package right from the factory then this might burn the board partners.

I'm not sure this is an entirely bad idea: The alternative would be that they release like 3x as many SKUs for the same chip and that's just a mess for the end users.

They always had that power.

They also have the power to just not give anything to anyone and sell them all on their own.

 

This new binning is not changing anything, apart from reducing the gamble. Well and possibly vendors can skip the binning and buy cheaper chips for budget cards.

Yeah but they can probably stop giving good chips to the partners they don't like and just say they don't abuse any monopoly because they still sell lower binned chips.

However the partner will suffer from that a lot
