Valve announces CS:GO FREE Edition

That is an interesting question. I remember that previously when you wanted to play competitive you had to buy a competitive pass for 19.9€, but right now i can access it, so maybe they have made it free? Maybe if i try joining a game it will tell me to buy the pass, but that certainly is interesting.

https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Competitive_Matchmaking_Pass

The pass is $4.99 or the equivalent currency from what I remember; it's been like that forever. If you have Premium and a phone number attached to your Steam account, you can access Competitive with nothing else. Otherwise you need a pass.

Maybe because I've yet to play online with the game... But the community I was with for CSS is long gone now and have not bothered looking for a new one.

But who cares I got it on sale xD +1 to steam library :P

Yeah but all you're getting for free is a game mode to play against bots, basically a free training version of the game to learn the maps etc and............ an option to watch games "al la dota 2".... some previous post's are acting like they got jipped money and the free version allows you to climb to global elite and earn skins etc lol....

Basically the same what they did with tf2, but they cut even more out.

(tf2 is only no cosmetics and no competitive for the free version)

Competitive in TF2 isn't free? O.o

It turns out it is free if you have linked your phone to your steam and if you have tf2 premium,

Otherways you will have to buy a 4.99 competitive pass.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

Coming back to this, why is everyone freaking out about it? It changes jack shit and is hardly a free-to-play version of the game; rather, it's basically a demo with match viewing features.

to put the game in peoples hands

Hardest part about selling any product is just to get customers looking at the product. They're making a free edition in hopes that it leads to more sales of the paid edition.

Winrar been doing it for years.

Nah its to do forensics for improving VAC. Everything Valve has done to stop cheaters has failed and its all reactive.

With the analytics they can do on an f2p version of csgo they can improve their detection.

I still refuse to buy that game.  ps what is the point of giving a Multuplayer game free only to be played offline lol. that's like mocking.

To follow up this, if they ever add the ability to play casual multiplayer in a free version they literally kill the game. Everyone knows what CS:GO is like when it's heavily discounted, everyone is running cheating software to exploit the Source engine.

Obviously they'd never be that stupid but it seems to be such an easy engine and game to exploit and I think it's a big reason why the game has been losing popularity. That as well as a general lack of innovation from Valve.

P.S. Should someone inform Valve that no one watches pro matches in-client anyway? People use Twitch...
