IFA 2018: Samsung, LG & AU Optronics pushing 8k displays

So as IFA 2018 has been going on, one thing has become apparent in that TV manufacturers feel that your puny 4k resolution is not good enough and you need to be upgrading to 8k.  Samsung, LG and AU Optronics at IFA 2018 have all shown off new 8k resolution TVs with screen sizes of 85-inches or greater. 

 

In the case of LG, it is in the form of an OLED panel that was previously only a prototype being displayed at CES.

Samsung's 8K display is the QLED Q900FN, which will actually be available for purchase as opposed to the Q9S demoed at CES.  This will include the same resolution upscaling as was demoed at CES as well as 4000 nit brightness and HDR10+ support.

We don't think that we've seen so much "win" in one place, but here we are. The television features a High Dynamic Resolution (HDR) panel that uses Quantum Dot technology and features peak brightness of 1200 nits (HDR10). AUO even mentions that color saturation cranks up to over NTSC 110%. 
 

I'm severely doubting that when any of these release within the next year or so that they will have anywhere near a reasonable price and there is no real content out there to drive on these but maybe it will help to encourage the decreasing prices on 4k displays to a degree that a decent large format 4k TV or monitor isn't out of reach...  Might actually have a reason to upgrade my TV at that time.

I'm still happy with 1080p. It's like the AK-47 of resolutions.

 

Good enough video quality, cheap, plentiful, low power consumption and even modern iGPU can run most games on them.

That's when you ultra everything. Take PUBG for example. Set NV-CP to high performance, reduce post-processing, use low AA and just put everything else to high along with distance to ultra and you WILL get no less than 100 FPS most the time. How do I know? I can with my 1080 Ti. You can probably do 5k easily that way. 8k is still gonna be a stretch but it will do it in less intensive games if you know what you're doing.

It's always good to see technology improving. I still think most consumers aren't running 4K screens and there isn't a lot of content available in 4K. 8K is cool development, it's a way off for wide adoption though.

I believe you can tell between 1080p and 4K but will we noticed a actual difference between 4K and 8K? Surely it will only be beneficial for 60+ inch screens?

Meh, you can have a new edge-lit Samsung NU7100 50" for $500, which would probably do HDR nice as well. Not a bad deal when you consider how much a big TV can cost.

Or maybe even near-perfect VR one day... afaik resolution is still a problem there. but need a lot  of GPU horsepower for that...

I agree, it make sense for very large display because it's not for overall visual quality as on small monitor since your eyes cannot catch that much pixel color. Everything above 10 million is replaced by another color to your eye like a gif compression and that's if you are so close to the screen that nothing else than the screen is in you field of vision.

Quite high end specs, while I don't care for TVs cool to see. Specially coming to monitors as well in time. And with greater HDR spec like higher nits, support true 10bit and without chroma color nonsense at max refresh rate.
