The new 13" MacBook Pros have stronger graphics and more powerful CPUs in them because Apple allows them to really open up.

Dell actually lost the battle this year.

As far as I can see the 13” MBP also uses Intel UHD graphics. Which config has a dedicated GPU?

Ah you’re right, they use SKU’s I’ve never seen before, higher base clocks and more EU’s for the graphics, pretty nice actually. Are you sure the MBP 13” battery life is comparable to the 13” XPS? The MBP uses a 28w processor whereas the XPS uses a 15w.

The 5K iMacs all had dGPUs........so uhhhhh, no? Perhaps you are thinking about base 1080p models.

Oh, excuse me, it was the 4K iMacs. I hardly see how that makes the comparison any less valid, in fact it's even better because they're both 4K displays. Not to mention it was even more pathetic because the iMac was a desktop that cost well over 1000$ sporting integrated graphics (and the 5400rpm HDD, just to make it more hilarious).

But my point is, I saw so many jump to defend that machine. So if the Dell is a shit experience because of it's GPU and display, then so was the 2015 4K iMac.

I know this is completely irrelevant to the topic, but it's just putting a smile on my face seeing that come full circle.

Oh yeah, those early 4K iMacs were garbage. Now they are much better and actually have dGPUs and Hybrid drives with configurable SSDs.

Well, you are one of the rational ones. :D

I fondly remember being swarmed by the defense force for a comment I made about those models back then. And yeah, the iMacs got a LOT better.

Ryzens new APUs are actually freaking amazing.

Apple has contracts with Intel, and while I and many others would love to see a Ryzen 2700X iMac with a Radeon Pro 580 or better, it’s a lot of work. Also one trade off would be the loss of Intel QuickSync, which is a big deal for FinalCut Pro.

I wouldn't be surprised we'll start to see some AMD powered Macs once AMD really solidifies their position rather than having Ryzen be some sort of one time fluke with nothing up their sleeves for the future.

The biggest thing is going to be bulk pricing. If AMD can undercut Intel, it would make it a lot easier for Apple to justify the switch.

But they would have to do it across the board. I don’t see Apple optimizing Intel macOS and AMD macOS.

I'm just going to say this:

My impression of Time Machine, much like most of OSX's defaults, is that it assumes the user is an idiot that needs the simplest thing possible. There is no choice.

Whereas Windows offers reasonably simple options that'll also do reasonably comprehensive, and the user has a choice of how they want to do things.

Also, any time someone says Windows should adopt x OSX feature, or OSX does x thing better, all I hear is that that particular someone knows jack shit about Windows.

The thing is though, if I set out to create the perfect backup program, I would just end up designing exactly what time machine is.  It may be simple, but sometimes there's nothing wrong with that.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

All the reason they need to show people this isn't a fluke. We all know what happened in that period when Bulldozer was supposed to be their net big thing. It practically fell flat on its face and was never really exceptional. I have no doubt that AMD will undercut Intel in pricing, they've basically been doing that throughout their existence. But as someone looking in from the outside, Apple has to be sure another Bulldozer scenario isn't going to happen anytime soon to even consider moving the entire Mac line over to AMD.

Perfect for who?

For me, Time Machine is simply inadequate.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

For most people.  As you've said, if you need something more complex there's other programs for that, but for something built in that will satisfy the needs of the majority of users, it would be a good option, but the current Windows offering really isn't.

The Windows option is a great option, provided you passed 5th grade reading comprehension.
